Pair Of Carved Holsters
« on: June 26, 2022, 02:19:30 PM »
In July I will have been doing leather work for 2 years. I have not done many carved holsters. I finally found a swivel knife that I am comfortable using and so I am making it a goal of mine to get better at doing floral carvings and such on leather.

I figured what better way than to start a new pair of holsters that feature a floral design. The following pair of holsters is the end result. I am pleased with the way they have turned out and expect to get better with each carved set that I do. I even believe I improved from one to the next in this set.

Hey, those look great! Lots of improvement over your earlier tooling. Keep it up, pard. What's going to be your next project?

Thanks. Not exactly sure on the next project. Maybe a belt for these holsters. Maybe something different.

Thanks Abilene. The carving and floral stamping has not been something that has come easy to me. I want to get better at it and for me the only way to get better is to just do it. Baby steps I guess.

Very nice looking work sir. A little tip, don't make straight continuous cuts near the spine, it makes it easy to split. Break it up a bit.

Very nice! Hard to believe your only at it for two years. As Abilene said "you are a very fast learner".
You need to learn to like all the little everday things like a sip of good whiskey, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk,  and a feisty old gentleman like myself

Thank you Johnny. I made my first holster on July 8, 2020. I have now made a good number of holsters but very few that had any type of carvings on them. It's something that I def. want to get better at.

Aside from the occasional basket weave, most folks are real happy for you to knock there intials on it. Too boring.

Really good job. Did you dye the background area BEFORE you dyed the rest of am I seeing a darker color due to the stamp?  How did you finish the holsters (dye/sealer, etc.  The rivets- I'd probably use Chicago screws so I could take them off if I made a mistake- but that's me.
Next project- I'd do a belt to match the holsters.

This is a good point. I buy Chicago screws by the hundreds. On a belt, they let you change buckles, too. Generally, I only rivet or stitch things on if it's necessary to look historically correct or is a better solution.

Thanks. Actually there was no dye used on this pair. The color was achieved by using Fiebings Gel Antique in a Med. Brown. Then Mink Oil was used.

I almost used Chicago Screws but the ones I had on hand were too long so I went with what I have plenty which is copper rivets.

Where do you get your Chicago Screws from by the hunderds? I have not bought any in big lots yet but would if I found some.

I've found them most recently (within 5 years) on ebay.
