Why were these worn?

To armor the wrist from rope burns, wire cuts, branding irons and keep the shirt sleeve from tangling in brush and getting dirty from cowboying.
They also gave a bit added wrist reinforcement.

I still wear them when I'm working with barbed wire. They save my skin and shirt sleeves.

I thought of some more uses:  they lessen the pain of horse bites, keep you from wiping' your nose on your shirt cuff, and provide a place to stash an extra ace in a poker game(if you're so inclined).

Thanks, figured except for the horse bites.  How many of you have been bite by your horse? Any reason he bit you, cinch too tight, etc.

I got bit  in the side while I was saddling him.  Twas early spring and he hadn"t been ridden for a spell.  Since it happened 60+ years ago I don't recall any other reason.  He never did it again ,tho.

A family member of mine wanted to go riding when it was 110 degrees and the horse didn't like the idea.
