Title: leather vest
Post by: Davem on October 17, 2022, 10:41:43 AM
I've decided I might want to get a leather vest.  I then realized there are a lot of options.  The "western" cut with the yoke. Anyone know when that came about?  Pockets, sewn on outside or a slit and on inside?  Suede or smooth leather" Leather or fabric in back?  Two pockets in lower front or third pocket on upper chest area?  Straight across bottom or V type?  I think the arm hole should be fairly large so as to not bind the arm.  Flaps around collar?  Man, lots of unknowns.

Yeah, lot of options.  I don't know if you are looking to be "authentic" or not.  I just know that every time I see a shooter at a match who looks good otherwise but has a leather vest with snaps, I cringe.  :D

I always think a vest looks better with lapels.

In my pre-CAS days I had a black leather vest I loved that did not have any closures, and had conchos down the front where buttons would be.  Looked very B-western.  I haven't seen one like that in a long time.

Howdy DaveM,

About the only leather vest I have seen that looks right is the John Wayne style. Frankly, I suspect that it is very authentic, but we've all seen it so much that it looks right. My recollection of the contemporary photos I've seen is that the vests were most likely fabric.

I agree with Abilene that lapels look best. Also, consider 4 pockets - 2 below and 2 above.

Those are my thoughts, for what it's worth.

 :) Well Now  ;)

I would suppose all know, JAY DUBBIA never closed his vest (twaz too small), always wore it open.

Now, I full well realize this tiny missive was of no help to the OP.  But what the heck, "Something to Do" (famous stolen JW Movie line).

I've been looking at old photos.  It seems that a little less than half, maybe 40% of the hands shown in a group photo had vests but the detail in the photos is poor. Some vests definitely had lapels.
And buttons for sure.

I'd like to find a leather vest with pockets deep enough to hold my S&W #2s.   ;D
