Miroku '73 tuning ideas..
« on: May 21, 2019, 06:44:25 PM »
Took me a while to sort my issue of the lever not closing correctly.  Thought others might benefit.  I liked it prior but now I really like my 44-40 carbine.

Is it just me that doesn't see the difference between the top and bottom pics? They look identical to me.

My wife just order a Miroku '73 Short Rifle in 44-40. I'm hoping it comes without the problem.

If the last 1/2" of closing on the lever of your new '73 is difficult the SASS thread  will likely clear up  your question.  If the gun is not hard to close you are set.   Easy fix either way as it only takes a few swipes with a sharp file to solve the problem which is why you don't see a big change in the photos.

this is where the bolt is too tight looking from the side...as the bolt is actually hitting the frame on the right side of the photo and making the bolt very difficult to close.  On my rifle this was not something that was going to "wear in" and would blister your finger by the end of a match.
If it is a problem I suspect you'll know rather quickly.

This is where you need to cut on the bolt with a hand file so it don't make hard contact with the frame....a caution here as a little metal cut off the bolt goes a long ways to ease closing!

So, if I understand the drawing, the three pins of the toggles must all be in alignment or you have the problem?

No....

The bolt hitting the frame when the lever is closing/closed is the problem.

So the three pins do not need to be in a straight line as per the drawing?

OK - got it! I'll let the forum know what the situation is with this new rifle when it arrives next week.

My wife's new 44-40 Winchester/Miroku 'Short Rifle' arrived today. First impressions:

- Very nicely put together rifle!
- Matching dark wood butt and fore stock
- Black/blue finish
- Good trigger out of the box

It does not appear to have the problem mentioned above as it closes nicely with no effort. It has the shallowest rifling I've ever seen in a rifle. Is that the norm?

The semi-short stroke kind of put me off as I'm used to the full length stroke of my Uberti '66 and Henry, but my wife finds it familiar and not unlike her Marlin .357 carbine. I could adapt to it quite nicely!
I'm trying to convince her that it's too much gun for her, but so far I'm not winning. She'll be shooting it this evening as we have a scheduled CAS work party.

Drum roll, please .....  ;D Yes, she did fire it last evening, a total of 10 rds at 20m with the group of us watching.

I put up a 16"x16" steel target and told her to hold centre. The rd hit centre right at 6 o'clock.  I upped the ladder sight and the next rd could not have hit more dead centre had you bisected the target! She fired the remaining rds into a group she could have covered with her fist and she has a small hand.

Load was 6 grs Red Dot under a 200 gr LRNFP. That's a bit warm for her liking in her 44-40 Pietta SAAs, but quite acceptable in the '73. It's the load I've used for years in my 44-40 rifles.

I don't know about her, but I was impressed. I'm still trying to convince her that it's too much gun for her and she just laughs and says - "Buy your own."

I think I will. I really like that rifle.
