Title: NCOWS National Match 2021
Post by: Trap on March 23, 2021, 11:38:07 AM

For info on Motels see the Marshalls column in the winter 2020 Shootist, if you don't have it, call me. If you are going to shoot long range on Wed call me for a time slot to shoot so you don't have to stand around all day to shoot. DO NOT call me until you have sent in your registration.    jt   (620 256 5866)

Just a heads up to those who are going to shoot long range. The Range is set up with targets at 50 yard intervals out to 500 yd.
for big bore you should be ready to shoot out to 500. for lever gun probably 300.
Just tryin' to even the score to those who shoot this range 2x a month.    ;)    jt

Hi Trap
I've never shot NCOWS Nationals. What is the format for the long range match?

The 2021 National Match website has long-range information.  You can find a link on the NCOWS website.

Saturday/Sunday last week, worked with a half dozen guns, shifting to what worked vs O Crap! All guns carried used will be original, primarily 32/20, backups/pocket pistol 32 S&W longs.
Go ahead, call me a gamer!

Discovered a problem with ammo, bullet pressed back, jammed rifle, 8 misses. So re-crimp ammo. Ready to bring an unfired to the line, a Merwin Pocket Army, lockup tight, hammer should make go bang, devised a way to prove on empty chamber.
For safety reasons, will take to range in one of 2 days open before match.
With Merwin back of cylinder covered,  can't show on empty chamber, so, took a dowel painted green & red zones, tried metal, but paint chipped too easily, wood holds paint better. Merwin's are cool, but not being able to prove on empty was an issue for me.

Is there any information available as to what forearms to bring for sidematches?

I checked the NCOWS website,  "still under construction"  (not being critical, I assure you!)

Side matches seem to be in flux. But from what I’ve heard, long range rifle(s), main match guns, pocket pistol, shotgun for clay targets.

Usually a left and a right,  but I believe Popeye forearms are considered "unapproved" unless you can provide photographic documentation.

I think for range safety, you should not be using spinach with those forearms, maybe arugula?   don't go all iceberg gamer on us though.

Took 2x Merwin’s to range today, both 1st time I fired, 44/40 3.5”bbl, Pocket Army, & a 7 shot 32 5.5”bbl with folding hammer. 44/40 no problem, 32, pull trigger hard/fast, over rotates, cocking hard with off hand also over rotates. Slower deliberate pull functional.
Will use 44/40, May use 32 at match.

Oh, none taken I assure you. If the shoe fits and all that. Besides I want to make sure my spotter keeps brining both his right and his left forearms when keeping me on target.
I have to take advantage of somebody else's mis-spellings every time I get a chance.

Here's an odd question . . .

What do the NCOWS members in Kansas recommend/use as an effective tick repellent? Or any NCOWS member, for that matter.
(And don't tell me a pair of tweezers . . .)

Why would your spotter be putting pickle brine on his forearms?

So to River City, as a Former member of missouri's irregulars, then a stint of redistributing money to those in need from retrobates like banks and railroads, I found time to play an interesting role playing game where I pretend to be a scientist in 21st century America, living in an area called the suburbs, mowing the yard (lately have been rolling ones on my d20 because i am mowing all the time!).   So this scientist has done some work in the pesticide field.    Get a treatment with an active ingredient that ends in -thrin.  Permethrin, cypermethrin, etc.   follow application directions, but probably they will have you treat the outside of your clothes and let them dry before putting them on.   The clip on items for your belt work great if  you are not moving much.

Any of the thrins are derived/synthethics from chrysanthemums, the flowers have been used for several thousand years to ward off ticks, fleas, etc.   You can link the Chinese Chrysanthemum festival to fighting off the plague, where it traveled west.   Napoleon's troops carried Chrysanthemum powder.  Plant them in your yard if you have a tick problem.

4x revolvers scarce/rare. S&W New Model #3 Australian, S&W DA in 38/40, S&W 1899 32/20 Target, & a 7 shot Merwin 32.

National Match late development.

As the side matches were declared, the pieces fell into place for a NCOWS Pocket Pistol Championship.

There are 3 pocket pistol side matches.  The best combined time/score for the 3 PP matches will be crowned the NCOWS Pocket Pistol Champion.

Oh, not pickle brine! The brine they use in pork barrels, you know, like to make bacon and ham and Windsor Loins. It keeps meat from going bad  ;D

I want to wish everyone at the Nationals a good time, good shooting and be safe. Just like the Convention, Covid is keeping me from attending the Nationals this year. The covid has effected our business. We cut our staff to the bone. Which means my wife and I our working every day with out a day off. NEXT YEAR!!

Had a blast today, shot 6x revolvers, 5 different calibers, smallest to largest. Guns, Colt New Police 32 S&W, medium frame Merwin 32 S&W, S&W 1899 32/20 Target, S&W DA 44 in 38WCF, an Australian #3, & a Merwin Pocket Army in 44/40.
The S&W in 38/40 has a nickname, “Thumper”, heaviest recoil of day. Rifle, chose & stuck with a modern Marlin 1894 in 32/20. Backup rifle Colt Lightning in 32/20.
Tomorrow, all guns same caliber, 32 S&W long, a Marlin 1892 conversion, & 3x revolvers, a Colt New Police, a Hopkins & Allen, & a Merwin. 2x guns being “Pocket Pistols”! Will start & finish on the Merwin.

It seems I have some Blanche Dubois' beholden to settle up.

Thanks to Glen Kreilein for doctoring me up on the first stage at the side matches. Slapped hot iron to it and a tourniquet.

Thanks to Michael Tatham for the loan of a S&W pocket pistol. Fortunately it shot better than I can.

Thanks to John Irons for loaning the pistol rounds to shoot the Pocket Pistol stages. (Plus a vest to sharpen my image Saturday evening)  Once again demonstrating how lucky I am to have him as a traveling partner.

Thanks to Bryan Buck for the loan of a tie for "going to town"- festivities on Banquet night.  His generosity knows no bounds. (And no, I did not pronounce him a man who knows no boundaries . . .)

Thanks to all who attended the NCOWS 2021 Nationals and added to the enjoyment.
This was a much anticipated and joyous release for us all after the last year of restrictions and missing out. Everyone was truly in high spirits!

Great job KVC. And the Church Ladies who served up a wonderful spread. Can't speak for that Walnut Pie, but the German Chocolate Cake was "gutes essen".
