Several years ago one of our staff at the museum asked me, on behalf of Charles Norman Shay, if I could find any family of his friend Eddie, who died in Charles' arms on 6 June. Both were medics with the 1st Division I looked up Eddie's family the next day on Ancestry, and the first family that showed up was his. I sent a message and they called the museum the next day. Arrangements were made to have Eddie's only surviving sister and Charles to meet in New Jersey where she lived at the time. Charles now lives in France, and he came to the reunion to meet her. Their reunion was well documented by the family, and Rose and the family self-published a book about it about a year later.
On this 2021 D-Day anniversary in France, it was noted on the news that the only American D-Day veteran able to attend, because of the virus, was Charles Shay, because he lives in France.
