Uberti SAA base pin
« on: August 25, 2020, 08:28:15 PM »
I have an Uberti SAA that is 3 or so years old. Got it second hand and it hadn't been shot much. Pulling the base pin out to remove the cylinder is a pain. When I first got it out, it had a couple small burrs on the bevel that I believed caused it to stick. I filed those out. Emory clothed the whole length of the pin. I even turned down the back of the pin where it slides into the hole front of the trigger. The only thing I haven't taken apart is the spring slide the bevel rests in. It still sticks! I put a liberal dose of lithium grease on the pin when I reinstall it. Am I missing something, these guns usually aren't that difficult to make work.

I'm not sure how/where it is sticking, and you may already do this but in general keep the gun on half-cock when inserting or removing the pin to keep unneeded tensions away.  Have you tried rolling the pin on a flat surface to make sure it isn't bent?

What Abilene said. I had one slightly bent that gave me fits. Straightened it and now it works fine.

I will pull it and roll it on my surface plate, later. I did roll it on as flat a surface as I could find in the house. It seems straight. I will keep at it. Will figure it out, thanks for the suggestion.

Swap pins with another gun will tell if it's the pin or not sometimes.

..ha ha, ironically, this gun was one of two my running buddy stumbled across and called me about. He didn't want both and talked me into taking the other. They are real close in production or serial numbers. He had trouble with the pin as well. May be something in that production run. 'll keep investigating.

My Good Robert-
this may sound insane, but ....
get ahold of your buddy and try swapping pins.

This^^^^

the guns may have been cleaned at the same time and the pins swapped. I know they should work but they don't always.

Since this has come back up, I'll mention that I've had pins hard to pull on both Colts and clones after shooting, mostly after shooting BP.  They pull out easily when the gun is clean.  So I finally bought a base pin puller that I keep in my guncart.
