Title: Well I did it...I just ordered a Henry Repeating Arms H011 in .44-40!
Post by: Tuolumne Lawman on June 05, 2019, 10:02:55 PM
It was actually arranged between Henry and the Cowboy Chronicle for me to do one of my feature length history/review articles on the Henry.  The terms were awesome and I could not say no....  I have to admit I am pretty darned excited.  I looked at one at our local match and I was very impressed.  Out of the box it was WAY smoother than a Uberti.

It will be neat to compare it to my early Navy Arms made Henry.

It is the quarterly magazine of the Single Action Shooting Society.  It is not for sale anywhere I know of. Once it is published and seen by members,  I can distribute it farther.  I already have some articles stacked up, so probably be next year around January.

My only complaint (and it had been noted before) is that is is so highly polished, the octagonal barrel edges are buffed a little rounded.  It has a beautiful American black walnut stock, and the deepest bluing I have ever seen!

Yes, I've also noted the over-polishing; it's a shame. The blueing is nice, however.

If anyone is interested, my 1976 early Navy Arms built Henry is available on the SASS Wire.  I really can't justify having two Henry rifles. There are other toys I need more!

There goes your International Multiple Henry Owners Association membership  ::)

Current members met and voted for your admission w/ only one abstain....

then you go and admit  " I really can't justify having two Henry rifles "

The horror .....   one does not justify.   One just accepts fate and commits to lust ! ;D

PLUS ONE too MAJOR 2

There was a time some Lustrum(s) ago, when I get it necessary to justify the acquisition of another Henry.  At the Thyme I only had two and had a buyer for one of them so I stupidly sold one (A Favorite) and was suddenly in lust ...... again ....... Rather than give credence to common justification, I simply gave in to LUST and bought another   ;D

It is my considered opinion that Tuolumne Lawman should NOT divest of the Navy Henry    8)

I have a Henry Repeating Arms version and this too is my one and only complaint. The wood on mine is gorgeous and overall a well built and great looking rifle but sure do wish they did a better job when polishing the barrel.

I would Luv to be able to get a hold of and read you article when you have finished and it's been published.

And, I get to pick my Henry up tomorrow at 9AM!  I am going to be like Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" waiting for his Red Ryder BB gun on Christmas Eve.

WOW!!!!!!!  I picked it up today.  It is gorgeous!  I have never seen a firearm packed better than the H011.  The walnut is crazy beautiful, and it has the deepest, and blackest bluing I have ever seen.  Yes, the corners of the barrel are a little more polished than I would like, but I can live with that.  It has the slickest, smoothest factory action (or for that matter any action) I have ever felt.  I get to try it at my local match Saturday, and I can't wait!

It is like a Mercedes or Rolls compared to an Uberti 1860 which would be a Chevy!

These are just cell phone pics.  I'll get some better ones later.

Headed off to the local match with the HRA Henry today.  We will see how she does.  As an aside, I showed it to my shooting pard "Hanging Judge Hemp" yesterday, and he was awestruck.  He also said it is the smoothest factory action he has ever seen, and as good as some of his custom, slicked up guns.

I'll take some pice for the article, too.

WOW!,  it was so slick!  No comparison with other non-HRA 1860s!  I cycled so fast I surprised myself.  Breaking clay pigeons and pop cans at 25 yards with monotonous regularity (We can't shoot steel at our range because the Birkenstock and man bun wearing friends of the chipmunks transplants from Berkeley got an injunction forcing us to stop shooting steel targets!).  Amazing rifle.  Some comparisons with the Navy Arms one. NA top, HRA bottom.

ABB-SOO-LUTE-LEE Outstanding.  Just wish I had enough inna Sock Drawer to afford one.  I'd be more than happy to have one in my safe, and It wouldn't spend much time there.  Only one last question.

Does it have the Cleaning Rod Trap in the Butt Stock??

I love this rifle!  Used it at another local match.  We were shooting pop cans at 25 yards for rifle targets, and I was nailing them every time.  Just kept it tucked into my shoulder tight, and cradled the junction of barrel and receiver in the off hand, elbow against my body. Silky smooth with no hiccups.  Shot clean with the rifle again.  It sure got lots of admiring looks and comments, too, with its finish and figured walnut stock.

Well, had another successful match with the HRA 1860. I took it to our local Nevada City Peacemakers monthly match for the third time.  We are old school in several ways.  One we are relaxed, and tend to have more challenging targets than your typical 2019 SASS match!  One of the reasons is because of an injunction by a local environmental group, we are bared from shooting steel targets. They thought they would shut us down with the court order, but we came up with a work around.  Our rifle targets are pop cans (full so they blow when you hit them) or clay pigeons on the 25 yard berm.

I shot the match clean, using the HRA 1860!  I nailed pop cans and clay pigeons with almost monotonous regularity!  It is certainly one sweet rifle.  Our club is a small local one with around 20 members + or -.  One already had an HRA Henry.  Since I got this and have been using it, two more have bought them, and two more are going to.  It is just that impressive when you handle it!

well, I took the HRA 1860 to an annual match, and she shined!  It was "Peaceful's End of Track" at Railroad Flat, CA.  My shooting pard shared the rifle with me, so she did over 200 main match rounds, and another 20 or so on side matches.

SHE SHOT CLEAN! The smallest targets were 3"x6" tombstone targets that were the last of five progressively smaller tombstones in a knock down rack.  The rack was 6 feet deep, at about 15 yards away, making the last target was 17 yards.  Ammo was Black Hills factory, reloads with 9.0 grains Unique, and reloads with 7.0 of Trail Boss. My pard has an Uberti Henry at home (didn't have any 45 loaded for it, so he shared my 44-40), and marveled at how much slicker the HRA 1860 is.

I actually shot the entire match clean, but had the RO foil that by giving me a Procedural.  As I was shooting the knock down tombstones, one fell sympathetically just as I was shooting at it, so I hit the next one, making me "shoot out of order!"

It was totally chicken sh*t, but he was a Nazi about it....That cost me a clean match pin.

Chickencrap ain't nearly a strong enough word for that.  ???
What the heck else could you do with that round?  Shoot it off to the side and then back to the targets?  Shoulda gone to the match director.  I've never done that before but think I would have in that case.

I never worry about speed and score.  I shoot to have fun.  I KNOW I shot clean, that's enough for me.  Though, it was the worst RO decision I have seen at an annual match.  They always say, if there is a sympathetic fall of a plate, shoot over the top.  What made this worse was that it fell as I line up and shot.  I was an out of towner, though, so my thoughts did not have ANY weight.

Most of the posse all knew each other as they all shoot a lot more than me, often shooting a match every weekend.  Even though I am known  for being a staff writer for the CC, I am still an outsider. I shoot one match a month at my small local club up in the mountains. I used to drive the two hours each way to shoot with the all the larger clubs in the Sacramento area (about half a dozen or more (most of which, are the same members as the others), before I retired and income limits.

The cowboy chronicle ceased paying us staff writers in about 2009 when the crash also hit the sport.  Since then, I write for free, and have to pay for my samples and also go through a local dealer for paperwork.  That is the reason I go through so many guns.  After I write the article, I have to sell some to get more examples.

In 24 years of writing for the chronicle, I have only received one firearm Gratis.  I generally get them discounted enough to cover cost and my fees when I sell them after the article. Sometimes, however, I do loose a little when I sell.  My current stable, of the HRA Henry and my two .44 Colt Open Tops will not suffer that fate, however.  By the end of next year I will be switching to Historical based articles.  I am tired of the buying and selling just for the sake of writing.  After shooting the annual match clean with the stable I have, I'll be darned if I switch now!

And a really swell righteous stable you have too.  I think it's particularly fun to shoot CAS with Rifles, Pistols and Shotguns that just might be comparable to those guns from "Back in The Day."  Shooting Open Tops along with a Henry is Uber KOOL.  I do however, take great Umbrage wid yer Shotgun.  gotz no external hammers.  Really need a Hammer Double (Tongue stuck firmly in Cheek).  Hammer doubles are really the Biz.

I personally shoot Cap Guns, SNUBBIES at that with my Henry and one of SIX different Hammer Doubles.  If I absolutely "have" to shoot Suppositories, I have a pair of Pietta 1860 that are Kirst Konverter(ed) for .45 and my really "old" 45 Schofield Open Tops ("X" serial numbers) that also have .38 and 44 cylinders and barrels.  Oh, and I also run All Brass hulls in my shotguns.  totally FUN stuff.

Nice looking gun. All of the Henry's I've looked at were very nice and was very curious how your report would be on the polishing of the barrel.

Honestly the only thing that keeps me from buying one is the over buffing of the barrel and rounded edges. Being a knifemaker I just can't get over that, rounded edges on a corner that is supposed to be there is a sign of poor craftmanship and amatuer buffing practices. I wish Henry would let someone train there staff on how to properly buff.

The problem is the cost of surface preparation, prior to buffing. It would be more expensive to correctly prepare the barrel surface than it is to  just heavily buff and therefore lose the straight edges. Strange how Uberti manage without over-buffing!

It is so beautiful, I can give them a pass on the over buffing.  I love it!  It is the FAVORITE lever rifle I have ever owned.

I used it again today at our local match. Our rifle targets were all on the 25 yards berm. Pop cans, water bottles (12 oz) and 2" colored plastic balls for bonus points.  I shot clean including the 2 inch bonus balls.  This thing is just crazy accurate!

That's always been my point, Uberti can do it on the thousands they produce so why can't Henry which if anything is probably a higher end gun do the same? I agree on poor prep prior to buffing, that's where many knifemakers make their mistakes, if you are spending more than a few minutes on the buffer you should have spent more time at the grinder.
