Side matches LRS

(1/1)

Carlos Murphy:
 Howdy the fire,

Thinkin bout gettin a Marlin Cowboy in 45/70 for long range side matches, is it enough  ???

I have a Cowboy Ltd. in 45LC for main match and love it, it's a great rifle.

gw:
Carlos----I guess I'm not sure what you mean by enough??  A 45-70 is enough caliber for most types of BPCR shooting, the Marlin would probably be fine to 300 yds. or so. It's limiting factors are sights and weight. For offhand shooting, no problem, it will work ok.

Hell-Er High Water:
Carlos,

I can't recall a Cowbowy Action side match for Big Bore Repeaters that was over 300 yards.  Most have been in the 100 yard to 200 yard range, with one or two out to 300 yards.  I shoot a 45-70 in these side matches and it has always been just fine at these ranges.  If you do get a 45-70 (or any other big bore for that matter) you need to verity, and record your sight setting for future reference, for the various ranges that you may be shooting.  Good luck and good shooting.

Anyone ever try shooting an 1853 Enfield 3-banded rifled-musket in .577 caliber?  Or one of the Springfield rifled-muskets of the War Between the States era?  Needless to say, this is black powder, only.
