1860 Henry Original or Replica?
« on: November 17, 2021, 09:43:56 PM »
Hello - recently came across this old beat up 1860 Henry frame. The front is bent a little, but the carrier block still moves freely. Curious if anyone can tell me if this is an original Henry frame or replica.

There is an “H” at the top right side of the receiver by the barrel. The right side plate has a “U.S.” stamp and lower tang has “26” stamped to the inside of the lower tang. I don’t see any other markings. I’d appreciate any information anyone can provide. I’ll upload as many pictures as I can.

I don't know but I'd hate to be the guy that got hit over the head with it.  :D

I think the best start would be to pull a screw and check if it is Metric or US.   If metric, it is a replica, if US, you could possilby have an original.   There would still be more to check, but the metric screw is a good litmus test.   I am pretty sure my hardware store has a gadget on the nut/bolt/screw aisle to measure the threads, since I don't.

Others may argue.  However.  What you have there is . . . . "Scrap Metal."

OOPSIES!!  I forgot to address part of your original post.  That frame is a Reproduction, not an original.  Well beat up and bent up, but a reproduction.

I must also agree with Sir Battersby.  Paperweight at best.

The length of the carrier block is a giveaway: if it is long enough to accommodate a .44-40 or .45 Colt cartridge, then it is a reproduction.
The originals were exclusively made for the shorter .44 Henry Rimfire cartridge.

My gut told me it was a reproduction. Appreciate all the input and advice. It’ll make a nice paperweight!

Thanks!

A little Brasso and elbow grease and it will buff out like new.

Try contacting some gunsmiths who work on them, maybe someone has a bulged or blocked barrel you could put on there to at least make a nice wallhanger out of it.

Here is one Johm Saffran made for his Grandson,
That same young man is a recently commissioned 2nd Lt in the Marine Corp.

If your relic were mine, I'd make the effort to wall hang it and put it up on display, just as DeaconKC suggests

I wonder if you bought one of these:

or similar, if the barrel and stock might be transplanted?  It would be nice if you could see one in person and eye it over well.

 :)  Ah Well  ;)

Nah.  None of the above.  Perfectly good scrap.  Melt it down and make something worthwhile out of it.  Maybe a little Brass Cannon.

PS:  Before gettin all excited about sourcing a Kaput Barrel, lookout the angle of the dangle of that frame.  Would make a real funny lookin "anything."

It’ll most definitely end up on the wall. Luckily, I have high ceilings. From 12 feet away it might almost look like the real deal…almost.
