Smooth & shiny means your lead or mould is on the cool side. I strive for a bit frosty and well filled out.  Inspect every one and discard & remelt any with holes or blemishes on the base or are not filled out.  For a higher level of accuracy, weigh and sort all the otherwise acceptable bullets into 3 groups.  Use the large group in the middle for serious use, and the heavy & light for plinking or practice.

My take on casting (somewhat) soft lead bullets is...

Frosty bullets are a bit too hot. (Both mould and/or lead)
Wrinkled bullets means either the lead and/or mould are a bit too cool.
Both too hot or too cool will produce bullets of slightly different diameters and weights.
My best,

Savvy Jack,
There are three known suppliers of the 427098 but unfortunately one is not currently doing business due to health issues http://montanabulletworks.com/   Buffalo Arms pretty much always seems out of stock although now they have inventory but the price is a bit much at $22.26 for 50 (!)

Western bullet has reportedly been questionable to deal with

In addition to what the other pards have suggested I wonder if you have zinc contamination from accidentally mixing zinc w.w. into your melt (?).

gentlemen,  working with advice and guidance from w44wcf, and after becoming totally frustrated with trying to find a reliable source for the venerable 427098, at the advice of w44wcf, I asked Springfield Slim, who has provided me with Big Lubes for some time now, if he would be able to produce the 427098 for me.

He did not have a mould for that round so I inquired if a mould appeared at his doorstep would he be willing to make that round?

As the true cowboy that the is , he said if a mould mysteriously appeared he would have no choice but to produce the round.

Well lo and behold an Accurate mould 43-210B(427098), has appeared at his shop so you may check with him at www.whyteleatherworks.com. It will not be listed on his site as yet so you may want to email him at whytew@comcast.net with your needs.

The mould he has is the Accurate 43-210B which is a modification of the original mould which allows for a little, more lubem than the original.

Hope this helps.

For those looking to roll your own, Buffalo Arms now has in stock the 427098, sized ,428.If they run out of stock it usually takes them a long time to restock so you might check my post above about Springfield Slim.
