Rear sight for 1876 - any receiver type?
« on: August 29, 2019, 02:20:50 PM »
I just can't use a semi-buckhorn sight anymore so I've been searching for a solution for my Uberti 76' in 45-60.

I put a Skinner peep sight on it and though its better, it's just too far up the barrel to get a good consistent sight picture.  I like the peep sight, it's just too far away.

Does anyone know if there is a side receiver type for the '76?  I may have to get a tang sight but I'd rather not go that way yet.  I've never used tang sights and wonder about hand position with them.

Skinner makes a ladder sight that sits back a bit more than the one I've got - it would still be pretty far away.  Williams doesn't mention '73 or '76.

Any help is appreciated...  this is a great gun to shoot!

I know that you said that you couldn't use  semi buckhorn, but I am 75 and have this sight on both my henry and 73. It works for me.

Thanks for the reply Will.

I like the cut of those full buckhorns better than the semi-buckhorns but believe I'd have the same problem with them   Once the front post fills the rear sight opening, I lose it, especially horizontal.  My eyes aren't bad and can shoot lights out with my 1891 Argentine and it has pretty small, fine sights.

Can you get much elevation with that sight?  How do you tell how much?  Something like 25 yards per turn?

I'm shooting 100 and 200/230 yards, with access to a 300 yard range.  Haven't used the '76 on the 300 yet.  What are you shooting the '73 at?

I wonder if the distance from a shooter's eye to the rear sight is a lot different between the '73 and '76?  Do you happen to know?  The '76 has a 28" barrel making the front sight out there a ways too.

The semi-buckhorn was a bit more than an inch closer than the Skinner sight is.  They make a ladder sight that brings it back another inch but it's pretty pricey at about 150$.  I think the Marbles and Creedmore are less than that.

Thanks again for the reply.

Take the cover plate off and hand make a lil peep that fits the dovetail right at the back of the action - the 66 worked without that cover - its only there to stop dirt and stuff falling into the action.

I?m mulling that over too.  Haven?t found a mounting plate that fits but then I haven?t had my hands on many.

Wish the cover plate fit tighter when slid back.  I think even welding/gluing a sight to that would be worth a try.  Might be a way of shimming the plate to a tight fit as it slides back?  Having a sight on top of that cover would be a nice way of doing it.

I live in a townhome and have no tools to experiment with.  But I do have a friend that collects old lever rifles and he has a shop though it?s for woodworking.

Thanks Greyhawk.  Ya got my imagination kick started again.

I am a fan of all types of peep sights, tang sights in particular. The peep needs to be fairly close to the eye. I have a 76 with an original Lyman tang sight. The original code on a 76 sight is "I" and mine is so marked. Unfortunately these are pretty rare. And there isn't a good current copy that I know of. Basically it has the same base as Lyman No 1 for an 1894 and the stem height for and 1886. This gives a tall stem that is well forward on the tang. Most tang sights I have seen that are sold for a 76 are setup like an 86 which is too far back on the tang and will be in the way of you grip. The "I" marked sight isn't in the way. I think that the best sight combination for a 19th century Winchester is the proper Lyman tang sight and a Lyman No 4 ivory front. At least for my eyes. It might work well to get a Marble base for a 94 and a stem for an 86. Just an idea. I will try to take a picture of my gun showing the sight.

If it works good ya could then carefully shorten the tail end of the dust cover till they both fit on that rail

I wasn't ignoring you. I am away from the guns and can't recall the amount of elevation adjustment. I sighted them to use the sight like a ghostring out to 100 yards and used the notch for finer shots beyond that.

Thanks Gentlemen.  I?ve got a couple of paths to go down.

I like the idea of putting a sight on the dust cover rail as it puts the sight right close to the eye, like John says it should be.  I like how the Marlin 45-70 has the ghost ring way back on the receiver.  I?d drill and tap for a post but that wouldn?t accommodate windage.   If I can find a base that fits back there, I?d gladly get a second dust cover for modification..

If I have to go with a tang, knowing there is a base that makes the grip better is great to know about.  That was the biggest reason for me to avoid the tang sight to begin with.  Thanks John.

Will, I?m married near 43 years.  I don?t even realize I?m being ignored anymore!

I have a Marbles Tang sight on a 76'. No issue getting a grip while using the Tang sight. For me, it took a bit of getting used to handling and shooting with the tang sight folded back. I use the barrel sights for close shooting & the Tang for 200+. I have the "improved" model, so I can change to a standard height stem for close work. I can also remove the stem & leave the base in place if I felt it wasn't needed for hunting (assuming the barrel sights are adequate).

Thanks Slim.  I might just have to adapt to it as well.  I'm almost out of ring when shooting 200 yards as my sight sits.  I get pretty consistent misses at a gong at that range and am convinced the rifle shoots very well, just need to see what I'm looking at better.  Also want to be careful and not get a product that doesn't stand up to use.  I know Marbles has a good product line.

Appreciate it.
