Old Jagers from the early 70's, would be sketchy... soft metal innards, no real parts availability, unless you fit other brands parts.

Quote from: Coffinmaker on Yesterday at 01:59:28 PMBut Hey!!  Iffin yer willing to take a gander at Italian Guns, there are several that deserve consideration.  Their Lightning and Model P Jr. are right nice.  Change a couple of springs and "Bobs Yer Uncle."

I have nothing against the Italian guns but I don't really know enough to distinguish between them.

Are there any that aren't worth buying?

Absolutely Major 2.

Safety and Comfort trump Authenticity ABSOLUTELY.  At my current degree of "seasoning," Slipping, Tripping or Stumbling and falling simply ain't worth it.  If anyone wants to question the soles of my shoes, I will gladly show them.  Very Very HARD!!

I would still offer again this item for consideration of the rule maker.  Should "Shooter A" beat "Shooter B" if they both knock down 12 plates, with "Shooter A" having a single plate that was smaller than "Shooter B", but took 2 minutes longer to do it??

Quote from: Hair Trigger Jim on Yesterday at 07:59:20 AMI'm assuming these are falling plates.  Wouldn't plate 2 now be fallen and unavailable to shoot at once plate 1 has been successfully shot (after accidentally hitting plate 2)?
Shoot whatever the farthest left plate standing is.

BP is a mechanical mixture with a burn rate that is constant whether contained or not.  Smokeless is an organic compound, thus the burn rate increases with pressure.  Thus Smokeless burns slow and inefficent when uncontained, but contained within a cartridge will burn faster and more complete as pressure rises.

Thus Smokeless can be classified as a "Flammable solid" for bulk storage, but BP must be classified as a low order explosive.  BP burns slower than many smokeless powders at peak pressure, but for the purpose of storage is called an "Explosive" as its uncontained burn rate is just fast enough to generate a subsonic shock wave.

THis probably explains it better.  Make sure you read the last paragraph.

"Entry level" in this game does seem a misnomer... "Worthwhile to spend money on"-level is what I'm seeking.

A rephrase of my question: If all I want is a shooter, is there anything that really competes against a used $600 Blackhawk in terms of "money well spent"?

Thanks, those seem like a good option to consider!

Quote from: Hair Trigger Jim on Yesterday at 08:57:03 AMI'm linking to this thread on the Colt Forum specifically because it mentions several discontinued single actions you may find on the used market (and some of the issues that may pop up).

https://www.coltforum.com/threads/virginia-dragoon.391586/

One that hasn't been mentioned is the Heritage Big Bore.  Another discontinued one is the JP Sauer & Sohn (West Germany) Western Marshal.

Thank you! Perfect. So many guns and companies I've never heard of in that link.

Maybe not as a propellent, but i believe there was a design made for a internal combustion engine using blackpowder as the fuel.   I believe late 19th century???    It has been a while since i read about it.  Will have to dig.

I bought a pair of Fugawee Congress Gators about 15 years ago.

https://www.fugawee.com/product/congress-gator/

They were the bomb, cooler in Florida Humidity and heat over my
Cavalry Boots (which I bought in 1990 and still have)
The Fugawee's a nearly twice the price I paid back then, but well-made and have serve well.
However, I now wear Amazon Chelsea Boots because I need the
traction security over the all leather sole of the Congress Gators.

leather soles are wreck in the making on dry grass, pine needles, marble or tile floors, don't ask me how I know  ::)
