Any updates on a 44-40 Spencer?
« on: November 05, 2005, 01:10:02 PM »
I am just wondering if anyone has heard any more about Taylor's coming out with a 44-40 Spencer.  I emailed them and got a reply that they were coming and I could preorder one.  I emailed back asking about a time line, but haven't heard anything.  I saw in one of the gun magazine's annual edition (can't remember which magazine) that 44-40 caliber was listed in the catolog.  I'm just wondering if this means that 44-40 will be out this year?

Last I heard, it was due out last winter...

I am a little supprised to see it advertised...

its not like it is period correct, at all!!! (not that the 44rus or 45sch are any better...)

In spite of what was advertised, I would think they would come out with one in 44mag or 45long colt before doing 44-40.

I think I read somewhere that their actions are limited to around 1.65" OAL for the cartridge.

The action is very solid, though...I think you could drop a 454 in there and not have to worry about overpowering the rifle.
(your arm may fall off, but, the rifle would still function)

HI
I agree one in 44mag would nice and a lot better the 44/40 if you have a hankering to take it hunting. It would nice to know if the action could handle
the 44mag strength wise as it would make a nice rebarrel or rechambering.

Hi
Actually after some thought I think its probably best to stick with the Spencers original chambering instead of trying to make it something its not.Have  just decided that is what I ll be doing. The dealer here in Canada is supposed to be getting a shipment of them in December and I can t wait will give me something to play with all winter.

After some range time with mine, I see why there is such a following to the thing.

Howdy,

I was talking to Tammy at Taylor's friday.  I think she mentioned they have 44-40s in stock now.

I will be talking to her again on Monday, I will clarify.

I thinking, if I get the .44-40 cartridge stop, the Lane extractor, then lengthen the chamber, I could have a .45 Colt Spencer.  With the option of converting it back to .45 S&W if needed.  But for most of my CAS shooting, that 8th round offers no advantage, rather tube load 3 than single load 2.  And I think the longer cartridge would feed better.  Whaddya think?  Maybe use blown out .44-40 brass for better extraction.
