Day before Yesterday I received a set of grips for my Uberti Cattleman that I bought off the SASS wire that had poorly fitted super slick urethane coated shiny grips. The new ones are purported to be Uberti Grips and I have no reason to doubt Midwest Gun works. Said grips were not in stock initially but I signed up for notification. Got notified and ordered them, pretty quick shipping. The grips fit pretty well along the back of frame, actually close enough to call good but given they were about 1/16 or so long where the grip hits he frame squarely and also about same or a bit more long at the toe of the butt some fitting was required. Fairly easy to get to fit using 320 grit sand paper. Actually harder to sand off all the finish than it was to get them to fit. Sadly it has been about 10 years or so since I finished my Krag and 03 Springfield Stocks and the Army Red Stain and Boiled linseed oil can are both in a safe place that is now undetermined. Have elected to finish grips with Formby's Tung oil. After the first several coats did find a bottle of old english crack filler which I could have mixed in to darken the tung oil but alas I do not want to re-sand to bare wood so the lighter natural finish will be how I roll. Have several coats on but need to add several more before finish is close to the factory finish on my New Uberti Cattleman. Will post pics at a later time when I get them mounted on the gun if there is any interest in that sort of gun porn.
