Time & money & motel rooms
« on: August 28, 2006, 02:46:57 AM »
Looks like I'll be showing up at the Muster with Civil War weapons only; not enough time to get them new-fangled fixed ammunition cartridge rifle and revolvers before then. But I have 'Charlene', my '61 Springfield, and a cap 'n' ball revolver or two to bring. I gotta get some new accoutements and make up some rounds, though. If the light is just right, you might just be able to see that big, blue .58 pill go up and down again through the air - if the wind blows the smoke away fast enough, that is. 65 grains of FFFg makes a lot of smoke.

Any suggestions about where to make reservations for a room? All the places online look nice, does anyone have an opinion on the best for price & convenience?

Frenchie,

Where have you looked?  In my opinion Iowa Falls would be your best bet especially if you don't know the area.  Very simple to get to the range from the but Hampton aint bad either.  Everything starts getting farther away if ya head to the east of the range.  By the way I am from the area and if I can think of anything more I'll let ya know.

Frenchie, A word of caution, the super 8 in Iowa Falls was sub-standard the last two times I stayed there. Well below what I expect from a national chain. Another option is staying at the range. Camping is available both primitive & modern (limited). I'm not sure but arrangements might be made to use one of the buildings on-site. You'd have to contact Kayleen to find out. Hope this helps. I tried a couple weeks ago to get a reservation at the Iowa Falls Super 8, and they were booked that weekend.  I did manage one at AmericInn, also in Iowa Falls.  I have no input on good or bad. I may wring out my Smith Carbine in a side match, if I get up there in time.  I considered shooting the match with it, but I haven't had it long enough to get proficient at rapid reloading.

I've booked a room for the 5th - 8th at the AmericInn too, looks like a nice place. The missus might come too, but only if she can get away with missing three days of classes.

Maj. Matt,

AmericInn's reservation number is 1-800-396-5007.  Don't know if this is for the actual hotel or the Chain's main office.  The hotel's number in Iowa Falls is 641-648-4600.  .
Rooms run $80-90/night.  Hope this helps.

I suffered an attack of intelligence today and realized I hadn't sent in my registration yet. It's on the way now. I have the motel room booked and just need to get someone to take over for me at work on Wednesday and Thursday. 16-20 hour drive, I figure I'll be there sometime Thursday morning.

My main concern is food, because I'm diabetic and can fairly easily get into hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). I'm going to have glucose tabs, of course, and my glucagon kit if things get really bad (not very likely, though). I'll have snacks with me too. What I'd like to know, though, is what are the plans for breaking for lunch? Do we pile into cars and head to a local eatery, or what?

Frenchie,

Get a hold of Kayleen I am sure she can help you with this.  I personally recommend her cooking if she is cooking at the Widow Barlows which is right on the range.  She is an excellent cook.  But I am not sure if she is cooking or not.  Just message her and I know she will be willing to help ya out.

Whoa! The Widow Barlow's? I've heard it is not to be missed, didn't realize it was there! That seems to take care of the problem, thanks, Kid!

For many that are not familiar with the range here at Ackley. We are just 12 miles from Iowa FAlls where the motels are. AmericInn would be my choice for accoiidations.
We have at the range, a cafe, and yes we break for meals. Fried chicken is on the menu for Saturday and pork loin for Sunday. Friday evening we will be haviing Chili, beef stew and beef and noodles to choose from. By the way all the trimmings are offered with these meals. Meat, taters, 2-3 veggies to pick from, 4-6 salads, dessert, and drinks.  Meals are also included in your Shooters fee.
We have water, camping, primitive, or modern, wood for campfires, emrrgency plan in place, and weather reports from our local police deparment, shower house with towels, shampoo, and soap provided. Water provided on the range.
I will try to have plenty of chairs so everyone can enjoy sitting around the campfire.
Be looking forward to seeing you all at Muster 2006.
