Mark on your calendars, the KVC shoot is October 10-12.   Main shooting is the 11th.  A nice relaxed shoot.  Round count is 30.  You need to knock the target over or hit it twice.  15 shots at each of two distances.    Good time.  Usually we have a chuck wagon.   Camping too.   More details will come to the NCOWs board.

Just to be clear, Trail Boss is a fast burning, bulky pistol powder. This powder is listed as #15 (fast to slow) (right behind Green Dot) in Lyman's top 152 powders listed by burn rate. There is nothing black powder equivalent about it, except how it is loaded for pressure.

Reloder 7 is listed as #67 and is the slowest (and bulkiest) of the powders that can really be used.

Correct pistol powders up to Blue Dot (#45) should be used for revolvers and rifles...while powders from 2400 (#46) through Reloder 7 (67) are better used in rifles (long barrels) to better replicate original velocities in rifles.

I been following this vicariously.

Never had a heavy barrel "Buffalo" Sharps, but several Carbines.
My first was 1863 Garrett percussion, then an original 1859,
which I cast my own lead.
another original 63 and finally a Pedersoli 74 in 45/70.

Presently and sadly, I don't have any of them  :P

I would think a Trapdoor with a Buffington sight would work quite well for this.  As long as you had the eyes to be able to use that sight!  And a good recoil pad.

A few years ago I thought of building a Heavy Barrel Trapdoor for this kind of shooting.  After I got done pricing everything needed I went and ordered a 45-70 Shiloh through Bill Goodman.  Get one a lot faster that way.

Ned, you and your friend need to come down to KVC this October.  No point in only doing this once a year!

I have a 1:36 (.429" bore) Uberti 44-40 and I shoot .428", 214gr at 300 yards, and only a 12 degree angle at impact, and maintains 925-950fps with a 1,350fps muzzle velocity....not exactly lobbing.

Morning y'all.
Coffee and tea are ready.

Had some excitement at church youth group last night. A girl dislocated her knee cap.

'Tis 60 and overcast. "Breezy. Partly cloudy in the morning  then mostly sunny with a chance of showers in the afternoon. Locally heavy rainfall possible in the afternoon. Highs in the middle 80s. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 25 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 50 percent."

The Powder Room - CAS reloading / 44-40 Replacement Powders
Last post by Bryan Austin - May 15, 2025, 07:05:39 AM
I know this may be a sticky subject, with reloading manuals and such but.....

I have recently been looking at "slower burning" replacement powders for the 44-40 rifle cartridge. As powders get harder and harder to find, new types seems to be on the shelves.

I am making the following list and am looking for some insight....

The current burn rate chart can be found in the back of Lyman's 51st edition. Everything I load centers around Reloder 7 as the slowest rifle powder I use in the 44-40 cartridge. I may try LT-32 if I find it local.

68 Accurate LT-32
67 Alliant Reloder 7
66 Hodgdon CFE Black
65 Accurate LT-30
64 Vihta Vuori N133
63 Hodgdon H-4198
62 IMR-4198
61 Alliant Power Pro 1200-R
60 Hodgdon Lil'Gun
59 Accurate 1680
58 Vihta Vuori N130
57 Accurate 5744
56 Hodgdon H-4227
55 IMR-4227

Recently I have been looking at "newer" powders that we may need to replace the current 44-40 powders we use. Keep us posted on any of these new powders.
