Sirs - recieved my real USCG orders today and will be staying in area for another 3-4 years. I will become the Operations Ashore (small boats, patrol boats, aircraft etc etc) specialist for the office of Defense Policy at USCG HQ.

Sounds like a tour at Buzzard's Point. Not exactly the nicest location in DC, but better than some others.

Commander, I was a sand crab all five years in the Canoe Club, never had the chance to blow chow over the fantail :'(

Commander and all - yep I weill be Dept Atlantic for 3-4 years and maybe extend for year depending on how billets go.
Due to being a command and Staff graduate to be (June) I am being sent to an O-5 job - not bad huh?!!:) as an O-4. So I will probably be doing staff work until I make O-5.
Frenchie luckily I have always had Sea legs - only time I puked was attached to pier doing ammo counts during Tropical storm.
The smell of military ammo, in a confined space with bad ventalation and getting tossed at pier did me in. Luckily I did make it to State room and did my business in private.

Obviously not a DEEP-WATER sailor! I'm proud to report that in all my years at sea (including a tour on a flat-bottomed LST), I never once lost my ballast. In fact, the cooks dreaded seeing me come in whenever we encountered rough seas of any kind and asking for a fried egg sandwich, or worse some fried porkchops and eggs. Only time I came close to losing anything was after we'd gone three weeks without showers (all but one of our fresh-water units had gone down) and I was in CIC (a small, dark and confined room), with three sailors "heaving" away. The smell got to be a bit much - so I went outside and watched other ships in our convoy dipping below the crests of the waves. It was still a rough watch to finish though.

A few years ago I was the USCG rep on a Aegis cruise for an exercise and I had arranged before the exercise for some ship to ship training between a Coastie ship and the cruiser.
There must have been about 10 ensigns on the bridge when our 270ft Cutter (USCG calls it a WMEC) showed up onscene.
The ensigns, not knowing better, said "oh wow we get to play with a patrol boat - this is probably the furthest that ship goes out right Sir!!?"
The CO and XO started to laugh as I turned and told them,"No - that kind of ships sometimes goes with Navy patrols to the Med and Black Sea amongst others!"
The look of astonishment and bewilderment on their faces was priceless. They asked - but Sir the ship is so small - doesn't everyone get sick?
On my pukey incident - my XO never let me forget - when tied to pier - some mornings he would come up to me and say - "You know Mike we are at a deep port - ship may move a little at the pier - sure you can hang today - you know I am just ocncerned about you?!!:)"
But it was all in good fun!!
