Pattern for Ruger Single 6
« on: May 22, 2023, 09:33:17 AM »
I’m looking for a pattern for a Ruger Single 6 .22 with 6-1/2” barrel.  It belongs to a friend of mine that lives in another state.
He’s looking for a western holster and belt.  Since I don’t have one or know anyone that dies I can’t draw my own.

LI have used Will Ghormley patterns and they work very well but they do not have for a Single 6.

Or, if you can give me an idea how to resize a pattern to fit the Ruger Single 6.

Thanks for any help.

Maybe the guy who has it can trace around it on a piece of paper and send that to you. You could work from that to modify one of your existing patterns. Alternately, maybe you could go to a local gun store and trace one if they have one in stock. You could modify one of your patterns from that.

Another idea would be for him to send you a holster that fits it if he has one.

I have a pattern for a Single Six but its a cross draw pattern. Would that work?
If that won't work for you I have found that a pattern that holds a 1851 Navy works well with a Single Six. You'd obviously have to shorten the barrel length just a tad. It dont fit it super snug so you'd want to wet mold it or if its a design that a top strap or hammer thong would work with just to keep it in for sure.

Marshal,  thanks for the idea of gun store.  I’ll check my local shops.

Rube,  can’t wet mold as I don’t have the gun.  Cross draw would work just needs the foldover made straight instead of crooked. I’ll let you know if I need it.

I found an Al Stohlman book that I got when buying some leather tools, etc .  How to make holsters.  There’s a pattern for  Single 6 5.5” barrel.  Should be able to adjust it for the 6.5”.

Does your pard's Single-Six 6-1/2" have fixed or adjustable sights? What style holster, in particular, is he looking for?  Unfortunately, the host for my website, discontinued my images, but I could send him a Trailrider Products catalog...no charge.  I have patterns and dummy guns for the fixed sight version, but it wouldn't be too much problem to make allowance for the adjustable sights.

If you would rather make your own pattern, take a paper grocery bag, wrap it around the gun....not too tight... and staple the seam edge. Cut out whatever skirt shape, flaps, etc. That should make a fair approximation of the leather if you use 8-9 oz leather.
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

That one does make a good Single Six holster. I have used it to make one early on in my holster making adventure.

A store about 2 miles from me has a Ruger Single 6 used in stock.  I took an El Dorado (Will Ghormley) .45 and a Colt 1851 Navy Holster down to try them.

The El Dorado holster fit it perfectly except for length.  Just add 1 inch!

Trailrider,  thanks for the info and offer for the catalog.
I believe he has adjustable.  I am making it for him as a surprise.  I made one from the Al Stohlman book.  Am trying a distressed look.  First coat of dye.

Looking good already. That's an interesting main seam recurve on it. It should be most interesting.

Will, well the dye idea is different.  Was going for distressed but didn’t turn out that way.   I’ll post pic later

It's hard to capture the true color or luster in a photo. We do get the idea, though.

After I drew up some Single Six patterns I found that they were almost dead on with my Colt percussion patterns. A SAA pattern is too big.

That has been my experience also.
