Title: What does Your Maker Stamp Look Like?
Post by: Marshal Will Wingam on December 27, 2007, 12:10:21 AM
Sir Charles deMouton-Black asked for opinions on his design ideas for his maker's stamp. That got me to thinking that there must be others who would like some ideas. I know I sure spent some time looking at pictures in Packing Iron when I was thinkng about mine. So, I'm starting this thread so we can share photos of our stamps to give others ideas for theirs. Let's all post pics and make the designing process easier for others. Toss in any information that may have helped you decide what you wanted to do for yours, if you like. If we get good participation, I'll sticky this thread for future pards to find easily.

[12/28/07 - I stickyed this so it won't get lost too far down. If there isn't much response, I'll just unsticky it. If there is, I can put a link to it in the FAQ thread before unstuckying it.]

I wanted a design for maker's stamp that would be typical back to about 1870 but still look stylish for all the way up to 1899. I chose a small rounded rectangle so I could put it on the strap on a holster as well as in the larger areas of a holster or other item. I stayed away from graphics since that didn't start showing up until the late 1880's as best I could tell. I didn't put a location since I may be changing mine, besides, who's heard of Aromas?  :D The size is 1 3/8"L x 3/8"H  Here it is, along with a photo to visually show the size:

Actually I have 2. On the first one I had made I didin't like the way the horns were placed, too low and a little crooked. The second one I had made a little fancier, but with smaller lettering.

Here is my most recent:

I spent the better part of the 70's through the90's in Visalia and have collected a lot of Visalia Stock and Saddlery gear do I thought it appropriate to model this stamp (was my third or fourth) after theirs ;) Of course I've been in Texas for quite some time again and might just have to create a new stamp again!

Heres mine from Hidecrafters. Due to it being made for a press, I gotta hit it about 5 times to get the impression I DO get. Will order one from Grayghost in similar style except for solid stars. DM

hOWDY Dolton  :D

I see you have your new Makers Stamp, Hide Crafters did a good job on it , it looks great , and still keeping period correct,  ::) 8)

I just got mine from Grey Ghost , and I tried to keep it looking period also , I think Jeff did a nice job on it and I couldn't be happier, so here it is, I had him make me a 1 1/4" and a 1 3/4" stamp.

Howdy Marshal Will Wingam

Thanks for your comments Pard, I think yours looks great just the way it is , it has that period correctness about it. :D ;D 8) But I am real happy with what Jeff at Grey Ghost, made for me , and he'll be getting my business in the future , I placed the order , and I had it in my hands five days later , now thats service.  :o ??? 8)

Howdy Pards:

Here is the new maker's stamp that I got from Jeff at Greyghost Graphics.  Much nicer than the old one.  This one is 1 1/2" and fits well on the belts  but I think I will also order another sized at 1 1/4" for smaller projects

Howdy Dalton

Thanks Pard, yea your right , the Grey Ghost impressions are lighter than some, but I fine them to be just the right amont of impression to get it done without going too deep and making shadows, and distorting the image, I tried wetting the impression to see if it would hold up , and it did so I'm satisfied it will hang in there for the long haul.

??? ::) :o Gotcha Dalton , but I think yours came out just fine , it looks like it is deep enough to hold an impression, and I find it is easy to read too, it's a very nice looking stamp Pard. ;D 8)

I'm un-stickying this thread and adding it to the "FAQ/HOW-TO/SUPPLIERS/IDEAS " thread so makers looking for stamp ideas can still find it in the future. I love all the stamps and hope others still add theirs to it as time passes.

You all are doing a wonderful job of contributing to the various threads so that others can have a database of useful information. Many, many thanks for all your contributions. Keep it up, pards.

Simple, plain, great service. Can't wait to get it on something real.

Howdy,

The Infinity Stamps may be a bit pricey, but the quality is definately there and gone forever is the aggravation my old stamp caused time and again.   :-[

Rolling thunder,
I'd never thought about a stamp like yours, very unique and nicely done. I guess being ol' timey as I am, guess I just figured ovals, rectangles, and the like were the way. Your's is way cool though!

I saw on another thread a Pard wanted everyone's stamp on a piece of leather. Great Idea! I'd be happy to have anybody elses that wants to send one. Might make a little hide board to display them in my shop.  ;D

Safe trails,
CKid

I have two that are fairly standard.  One is  a Phillips I think, I use a 3 ton press to put it on.  It is the standard Oval that many have shown already.  The other one I have is a small oval, about 3/4 inch wide that I got off ebay, from a guy with a parrot in his logo.  It is really nice and is good for throwing a very discrete mark on.  Frankly, if I had that one to do again, I might consider getting
a 1", the 3/4" really is pretty small.  It is plastic but the impression is great, and a normal tooling hammer will put it on.  The plastic is supposed to last a very long time, and it was something like 25 bucks.  I'm out of the shop for the summer, so I don't have access to the stamps, but I may be able to find something that has them on it.

X-ring Rc,  I felt a 40 dollar stamp was more authentic ;D  I was able to get my stamps and the press, nearly, for the same price.  Though those Infinity stamps do look like they would do clean work.

Looks good. I am curious what the WR2021 is?

I was marking my holsters with the year and a serial number such as

1
2020

but since I got my makers mark I have been just putting that.

I traded work with a blacksmith friend. Leather for black iron. He made me 1/2 dozen buckle sets out of pony shoes and nails for a saddle rifle scabbard.

Congratulations, Dave! Those are beautiful stamps. I've wondered about the quality of Delrin stamps. This says it all. Thanks for sharing with us.

I've been wanting to get an oval one made and having seen these, it will certainly come from Grey Ghost Graphics. What size is that oval stamp?

I just got another makers stamp. I have been wanting an oval stamp for times when my other one doesn't fit or look right. My other one is a steel stamp made by Infinity Stamps. I wanted to see how the Grey Ghost Delrin stamps are. The order went smoothly and after I sent my artwork to Jeff, he had the stamp to me in a couple days. Great service, there.

This one was inspired by a Main & Winchester stamp.

I'll compare it to my steel stamp made by Infinity.

The Delrin stamp is laser cut so the whole thing is straight cut where the steel stamp has tapered lines. The impression is ever so slightly crisper with the Delrin one but not greatly so. The image made with the steel one is slightly softer looking and maybe a bit more historically correct, but again, not by a lot.

What is the most different about them is that the laser cut image requires a heck of a lot more oomph to get a decent impression. My 32 oz UHMW mallet wasn't up to the task. I tried several times with it but finally found that I got a good impression from two whacks with a 1lb dead blow hammer (which is now one of my leather tools). On the plus side, lining up the stamp for the second blow was easy.

So which do I like better? I like my Infinity stamp a little better but the Grey Ghost stamp was considerably more affordable. Both are top quality. The steel stamp will last forever where the Delrin one may not. When the time comes to get another stamp, it'll depend on my mood which one I get.

I know exactly what you mean. I only have the one stamp which is the Grey Ghost. I love the impression it makes but I have to beat the crap out of it and really lean it forward to get the upper part to stamp a good impression.

At Smokey Dave's suggestion, I tried the stamp using my drill press like an arbor press. It worked great and made a good, even impression. If you have either one, you may want to give that a try. Just make sure the stamp is flat on the leather when you do it. If not, that might be something to look into. 1 lb ones are listed on ebay for $11 with free shipping (like mine) and a 2 lb one is $14. I did get a good impression with mine.

I bought a small arbor press from Harber Freight several years ago, it does a great job for me. Gently lower the press ram onto the stamp and apply a firm pressure. Be sure not to let anything move. It does a great job. I think I posted a picture earlier to show the results.

What size arbor press did you get? Harbor Freight currently advertises a 1 ton one for $65. If you have other uses for one, that may be a way to go.

I just had another stamp made by Grey Ghost Graphics. This one is 1-3/8" long. It is inspired by one of H. H. Heiser's stamps. I finally hit the maximum detail point. Any smaller or any more detail and everything would get lost. It came out great, though. It shows how good Jeff's stamp making is.
