Title: SHOTS RIP!!
Post by: Paladin UK on June 16, 2012, 01:57:40 PM
Well Nurse, I think we call it!! :'(

Its been three months since the.... `Last Post` sounds ironic dont it.

I `spose there`s just too many forums now!!

Shame it could have been great, I think the kind thing to do is just quietly remove it. Unless any pards gotta better answer.

PUK;  I feel your pain.

There are two ways to go on this; Go for the complete registry and issuance of scrolls, or leave it as a completely self administered scheme, where those who want a scroll download it and hang it on their own wall.  I started the first, but reverted to the second as I got busy (and lazy!!!!)

Which way do the fellowship of the soot want to go?

I too was suprised by the sudden silence in this forum.

It is almost like some folks thought that too many shooters were coming in for recognition of their sooty ways...

I run with the loosely associated but tight nit group the Virginia Fire and Brimstone Posse and have fun doing that but thought that maybe this group could be a wider group of people with a wide mix of range in the SOOTY ways.

I am glad I did not order those pins...I had worked with a pin company got a design good to go with first pin done up for approval and was about to plop down the first payment myself - which while not a "princely sum" would have been a minor investment.

PR, you need to let people know and then take orders with money up front, like the Posses do for badges. If they want a pin bad enough they will put up some cash.

Sir Charles, I sort of figured we would have a list of members along with their honorary titles that you mentioned, like some of the other boards, such as RATS and SHOTS, do. As far as the scrolls, none of us do this for a living, so I am fine with downloading and printing on the paper of their choice, this would also give them the option of changing the font to something special like an old style script.

I also find it strange that there were multiple posts requesting we ask the Marshal for this special space and now that we have it, it's sort of like a treehouse that no one uses. If we are not going to use it then let me know there is no need for the Marshal to maintain this space on the website if it is not going to be used.

This board's not dead - some of us "mouthy" types have simply been attending to other facets of life and spending less time here with our electronic friends a fellow Soot Lords.

Like finding ammo.  Or Powder.  Or primers.

And being generally disgusted with our country's current "leader."  (You notice that I put the word in quotes.  Most of them couldn't lead a parched blind man to a water fountain.  Can you say "inept?")

Have a nice day - and keep shooting Black Powder - like I do!
 ;)

No! not dead.  You are welcome to be a member at the level you feel is appropriate. I haven't been keeping a membership roll as there are too many soot lords in too many places. If you are in a group or club with many adherants to shooting the original gunpowder you may induct them as members of the Order as well.  Like a ponzi scheme, but free.

I sure hope this isn't dead as I just started posting here too. There is almost nowhere else (Blackpowder Cartridge News excepted, a fine journal) to get any information and exchange on this illustrious subject. I've let almost all my magazine subscriptions lapse as the rare article that pertains to Blackpowder wasn't enough to hold my interest. I've been involved in cowboy shooting for 15yrs and cap & ball pistols for 20yrs--how did i not know about this site till now? Better late than never. Best To You Guys

Welcome to our board, Navy Six.

How about hearing about your experience with the true gunpowder

I'm new also and agree with Navy Six.  I've been shooting black powder for a long time albeit off and on and usually sit back, read and learn.   My Dad always said to '...learn something new everyday' so that's what I try to do.  I have learned a lot from this forum on top of things I learned the hard way...and that includes a 'cross-ignition' when I was a teenager so many moons ago.   :-\  Luckily my guardian angels were working overtime that day.

Thank you, Sir Charles. This feels like home to me. As stated, I started out on cap & ball about 20 years ago just for the fun of it. I was getting tired of the usual stuff in the gun mags and there was no Cowboy shoots in NJ yet. Then I heard about a new journal called The Black powder Cartridge News. It was and is an excellent publication and I am proud to say that I have every issue starting with Vol. 1 No. 1 which I refer to constantly. Then around 1999 our club ( Central Jersey Rifle and Pistol--great bunch of men and women ) decided put on a few Cowboy matches on a trial basis. I new this was it for me and I have shot every match since the with Blackpowder--every single round down range has been fueled by Black and the club matches have been going strong ever since. Quite a few people on our usual posse have been converted as well. My wife decided I was having too much fun without her and asked me to buy her all new equipment so she could shoot too. For the first two years she used that OTHER powder ( I forget it's name ) until one day she said " I'm tired of that OTHER powder ( I forget it's name ) and please load me some Black powder rounds!". It's been great ever since, not having to explain why new guns are necessary and why the UPS truck drops off cases of Black Powder! Don't mean to be too long winded but here is my favorite story:
I needed more powder and called and placed an order with the Maine Powder House. After telling the gentleman that I wanted to pay with a check instead of a credit card, he said " Fine, I'll ship your order today". I was a little confused and said " but I haven't sent you the check yet ". His reply-- " That's all right, you Black powder guys are OK!!!! " Can you imagine being treated like that anywhere else?  Needless to say, where do you think I've purchased all my powder from.
To wrap things up, virtually all my disposal income goes to the wonderful vendors supplying us with all these neat things associated with Cowboy Shooting and Black Powder. Life really is good sometimes.  Best to all of you Ladies and Gentlemen,  Navy Six

Sir Charles, rank has been chosen and a signed copy of the covenant will be displayed in a place of honor as soon as a copy of the family crest arrives. Mail delivery from our ancestral castle in the wild Northern Hungarian/Transylvania region is not always prompt.  Navy Six

I would very much like to be a Brother of the Dark Arts.  There is no better gun powder, the boom, the fire, the thick smoke and that flowery smell. Roses don't even compare.  Oh, did I mention that I like shooting black powder, brings a smile to my face. ;D. I have been hunting with this fine substance  for quite a few years now.  I have also tried to lead others into the light, but this is an endless endeavor as the smokeless  heathens have spread  their falsehood about the Holy Black, thicker then the smoke that is expelled from my muzzles.  So, did I tell you I enjoy shooting black powder?  I do.  I guess you have figured out that I would like to be a brother in the order. :o
Take care and keep your powder dry.

Sir Charles do you want me to start a thread with a list of the SHOTS members. We can also list their rank, it would be like the list for RATS and some of the other boards.

If you wish Lucky.  There are so many of us that the task boggles.  It may be an alternative to the self administered honor system, which never seems to endure.

I am not dead, YET!  I've been shooting Black Powder since 1970.  Started out with a British Brown Bess and graduated to C&B Colt and Remington Reproduction revolvers.  Then I added an 1863 Zouave, and a Pennsylvania rifle and immersed myself in Revolutionary war reenactments.  After getting an 1863 Shiloh Sharps Carbine I joined up with N/SSA and shot my rifle and carbine once a month with the 2nd Maryland Artillery, C.S.A.

Once I found Cowboy Action Shooting I read all I could find on BP cartridge shooting, types of lube and what primers to use, cleaning both the brass & firearms, and why compression was needed for a cleaner burn with some powders.  After taking the plunge with an 1860 Steel Framed Henry, I was hooked.  All my cowboy guns were fed a liberal dose of BP for almost ten years.  I had 1875 Remingtons fitted with new cylinders chambered for .44 Colt, Colt Clones in .45 Colt using a weighed charge of 40 grains of Goex behind a 250 grain P.R.S Big Lube Boolit.  I upgraded my battery of long guns to include the 1866 Yellow Boy, and the 1873 Winchester, both in .44WCF. It got to the point where I had revolvers in .44WCF/.44 Special, .45 Schofield/.45 Colt all loaded with BP or substitutes when BP became hard to find.  I still shoot BP in my 1876 .45-60 WCF as well as in my .45/70 Rolling Block.  Don't let me forget my Shotguns.  The three side by sides, Rossi Overland, Baikal Hammered SxS, the 1878 Colt SxS, and the 1887 Lever action 12 gauge.  They were the most fun to shoot.
