Actual Uberti bore diameters, .45-60?
« on: September 07, 2022, 09:21:55 AM »
My rifle will arrive at my FFL Friday or Saturday.  I bought it ANIB and unfired, and noticed in the photos that it is marked Dixie Gun Works on the top barrel flat.
Pulling up Dixie's description on their Web site, they say bore specs are .450 lands/.456 grooves, 6-groove 1:20 twist. Almost every other source I have seen discussing the Uberti 76's mentions a groove diameter of .457. I realize a discrepancy of a thousandth won't alter the earth's rotation, but am wondering what your Uberti barrels mike.

Just FYI the Uberti bore/groove chart on Cimarron's website matches Dixie's info.

https://www.cimarron-firearms.com/bore-groove-twist

So that would seem to verify Uberti's specs.  What they actually measure to I can't say.  Hope you enjoy it!

I should have checked there too. Thanks for the link, Abilene. I will slug my barrel when I finally get that rifle in my paws.
By the way, I like Abilene, too. It's about 35 minutes from Sweetwater on I-20. My great-granddad was the first postmaster of Buffalo Gap, 1870s.

That's neat about your great grandfather.  I ate many a catfish and beer dinner at Deutschlander Gardens in Buffalo Gap.  Sadly, I see that they closed last year due to pandemic issues.  I think B.G. actually pre-dated Abilene, but the railroad went to Abilene instead, so it got bigger (don't quote me on that history).

I am sorry that it is gone, too, as I would have loved to have eaten there.  I've been advised that I really should try Perini's Ranch Steakhouse in B.G.
The Gap was the original county seat of Taylor County, complete with courthouse that is still there. I have heard that the citizens of brand-new Abilene put it to a vote to relocate the county seat to their town, and that the bad feelings when they won the election led to an armed posse from B.G. trying to nullify the results. Wonder if great granddad was in that bunch. When he was an elderly man, one of my uncles visited him in Denver in the 1920s, and he showed my very young uncle three bullet scars -- and the Colt in the shoulder rig under his suit coat. This made quite an impression on my uncle, and I am glad he told me the story not long before he died.

Back on topic, my rifle arrives at my FFL dealer tomorrow. Can't wait!  :D

I slugged my 45/75 when I got it (didnt write it down) based on what I got I shoot either straight from the mold at .460 or resized at .459 - that works pretty good (blackpowder only in the 76)
Some tell these are really Pedersoli barrels ? if thats correct they (Pedersolis) have a reputation for liking boolits on the fat side - .459 - .460

I also have a Chiappa 1886 in 45/70 and shoot the same boolits in it  over a duplex load (6 gr 4227 + 64 gr black)
I use a 45 thou HDPE wad over the powder
Both these rifles are capable of sneaking under two inches at 100yards on the rare occasion I am up to it

Enjoy your 76 they are special.

Thought I had added this to the thread, but I got .450/.457 measuring the slug with my cheapo calipers.

I never slugged my uberti in 45 60, but I have been shooting 300gr bullets that fall out of the mold at .460.  I don't resize and am getting great results @ .460 and 20-1 mix. No barrel leading and good accuracy with real black powder.

Standard rifle. I'd like to point out I had one 10 years ago and it didn't shoot well. I think I was shooting too small of bullet .457 and commercial hard cast. Not a good combo for me.

HA!  You'll have to excuse me, I have had the flu since Monday. Near death at any given moment. ::)   LYMAN 457191 These shoot well in my 45 70 and 45 60
