Who makes a nice Bowie type knife?
« on: January 10, 2022, 01:30:53 PM »
I'm not looking for a huge 12" blade one. I'm looking for one more along the lines of what would have been found commonly in the west. Probably a 6" blade or so.

So who makes a nice one that I can pick up? Not looking for pass down through my family quality but nice. I will get a Randall at some point but for now...

If you 'really' want an example of what was actually carried and used - get a carbon steel butcher knife.

Those were sold by traders, sutlers, hardware stores, etc - and were carried by everyone who needed a good blade for general use - many were sold without handles, as they were easier to ship - and were handled with antler and wood, with the Indians rawhide-wrapping them and decorating the sheaths.

They may seem somewhat prosaic, but the 'real' Old West wasn't a Louis L'Amour novel with big bowies and damascus blades.

Scouts Out!

To be clear, the blade is 1095 high carbon steel, coal forged, and heat treated
it is also made in Oregon - USA

I was the same.... I wanted one without being made with the Stainless so many are made with today.

The roach belly design is even earlier that the Bowie and is very handy camp knife.
Though not quite to heft of a larger Bowie for chopping

This is a long thin bowie my wife won at the Salisbury NC match the year before it became the Uprising at Swearing Creek SASS NC State shoot. Believe it was done by a local knifemaker but I didn’t like the mediocre sheath and so I bought a nicer commercially made sheath from one of the big vendors at the NE Regional in Md at some point. It’s very nice but I have no idea who made it.

I bought this Linder Kentucky Bowie on ebxx website several years back. The only problem is it is stainless. Wish it was high carbon steel instead.

Whilst I "normally" prefer HC, the Linder 440C formula does make for a really good knife that holds an edge!

Linder, Puma, Hen and Rooster, and some of the Seki, Japan makers all put out a great 440C when made in the original country.
the Chinese versions, not so much.

These guys make a nice bowie, i linked the one i bought. be mindful that is in british pounds. i paid almost 200$ for the one i bought. says carbon steel and mine came in shiny, used mine to cut a onion and it tarnished somewhat but not sure if it is carbon steel. they have some in different sizes depending on what you want, the 6" bowie is a all around nice one.

The Sheffield bowie was a familiar sight on the frontier. Reasonable size, not one of those short swords popular in the days of the single shot flintlock pistol.

Professor Marvel, you are correct. In fact the one I bought came shaving sharp right out of the box. I liked it so well I bought another. I just wish it was HC so I could make the blade look aged.
