.45-70 advice
« on: August 09, 2021, 09:37:01 PM »
Okay I have joined the ranks of the Dark Side [and where are the cookies?] for loading a .45-70 Trapdoor with BP. Anyway, I am wanting to start with a light reduced load with 300-330 grain bullets and probably about 55-60 grains of BP. So what should I use to take up the extra space in the case?

Track of the Wolf sells the Circle Fly fiber filler wads in 45 cal. I shoot two 45-70 loads: (IIRC) 50 or 55 grs FFg, two beeswax discs (medium brood core) and a 385 grain RNFB Lyman bullet cast 1:20 lubed with 50/50 deer tallow/beeswax sized to .458 with a (IIRC) 2.57" OAL. (no wad)

The other load is the 150gr "collar button" bullet over 50 grs Black MZ (APP would probably work) and two 45 cal 1/2" filler wads. The bullet is lubed with BW/deer tallow and sized to .458

If you shoot a 300-330 gr bullet you might need 1/2-1 wad as a filler. The wads are unlubricated. I don't lube the wads unless they are to go into the revolver and will be shot immediately.

2nd on the Track of the Wolf wads.  Just loaded 50 rounds last weekend.    I am using the 405 gr, 60 grains of FFG and a card and a wad.   Decent compression.    In playing around to find the load the rifle likes, I used 50 grains of FFG, a card, a 44 cal wonder wad and fiber wad.  It worked, just not what the rifle was asking for.

Oh, and I ate all the cookies, sorry.

My favorite 45-70 BP load for my trapdoor sporting rifle is 55gr 2F Schuetzen , a Buffalo Arms .060 veg fiber wad under a .459 .405 gr rnfp bullet lubed with SPG. A very pleasant load to shoot,  Jw
