#2 Sheriffs Model Slim Jim
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:50:30 PM »
I have now completed my second holster.  I made this for a friends Sheriff Model.  He wanted something simple and also a little roundness to the toe.  This was fun and I actually like the way it turned out.

1. Will Ghormley Forty - Niner holster pattern
2. 9-10oz Vegetable tanned leather
3. Eco-Flo Briar Brown
4. 3 coats of olive oil
5. Satin Sheen

Still no shortage of mistakes, for example ... The border began as two lines.  I used my adjustable groover and cut the first line ... so far so good.  When I cut the second line, the groover blade moved and I cut into the section between the two grooves.  After sitting and looking at that for a few minutes, I took a back grounder and put in the current border design.

Two Walks - great job! The holster is very nice!  I like the design of it.  I had a pistol like that and I made a holster very similar to yours.  It was a great little pistol, but alas, I traded it off this last summer on a "new fangled cartridge gun".  I'm sure that your friend will be tickled to death with what you made for him.  And gee . . . . you're probably the only one who has ever had a "slip" like that!   ;D  It's just like woodworking or any other craft . . . when you make a "booboo", you figure out how to incorporate your "slip" into the design.  You did a great job!  You should be very proud of it!   :)  Thanks for sharing with us!

I agree with Will, nicely done, just goes to show us when we have a good pattern, we can adjust it to work with other guns, Wills patterns are great for this and for getting started.

bedbugbilly and Marshal Will Wingam: thanks pards, this was another enjoyable holster to make and has helped increase my confidence.  Errors are inevitable, learning to cover them up and make them part of the design is the challenge.

Ten Wolves, thank you for the kind words.  I agree totally about Will's patterns.  They are great and easy to understand, I am really happy I got them to begin this journey.

Two Walks   that holster turned out very nice. If you hadn't told us about your "mistake" I would have never guessed that it shouldn't be like that. Nice job.

Howdy Two Walks,

You are well on your way. Nice work! Only you will know where any slips were made. I like the way you list the finishing procedure and where the pattern came from. Look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks Boothill Bob, I look forward to the day my skill level gets close to the work you do.

Johnny McCrae I appreciate it.  Being very new at this and having spent much time studying the beautiful work everyone on here does, I realized that I always wonder about the procedure, materials and pattern source for items.  Made me figure that there might be someone start behind me that can learn from my mistakes and corrections as well as what I used.

Twowalks that is truly handsome,  and a beautiful addition to the revolver. I hope to make a similar one for a new birdshead gripped short barrel Ruger Single Six I just brought home. Please keep sharing your work here. Don

Tallbald and KT, thanks for the responses.  I have started another holster project but it might be awhile before it is done, I am old and slow.  Well not as old as KT but getting close.   ;D
