"You call her a child, Laura Belle? Under that heathen blanket, there's a full-blossomed woman fit for the devil to drive men crazy...Guidance she needs and guidance she'll get or I ain't been the Sin Killer from here to El Paso for thirty years."

Let's go with Lionel Barrymore (Sen. Jackson McCanles) to his wife Lillian Gish (Laura Belle McCanles) refering to Jennifer Jones
(Pearl Chavez) in Duel in the Sun.  Also starring Joseph Cotton and Gregory Peck.  By the way William Boyd had been offered the part played by Peck, but didn't like the morals of the character, didn't fit the Hoppy image.

Mighty close there, Russ T.  You got all the other cast members right, 'cept for the one in question.  Seein' as how it looks like it's just you and' me interested, here's how it was:

"Later that night, Pearl is woken from a sound sleep by Vashti who has come to summon Pearl before Mr. Jubal Crabbe (Walter Huston), the territory's traveling minister - dubbed the "Sin Killer." Draping just a serape blanket around her, Pearl hurries to the sitting room where Laura Belle suggests Jubal give her some needed guidance. The hellfire preacher Sin Killer, a hypocritical, lecherous Bible-thumper sights Pearl under her blanket:

"You call her a child, Laura Belle? Under that heathen blanket, there's a full-blossomed woman fit for the devil to drive men crazy...Guidance she needs and guidance she'll get or I ain't been the Sin Killer from here to El Paso for thirty years."Having designs on her himself, he has her sit down, and asks for her to decide which way she will go. He lustfully delivers a brief but fiery blessing, telling the oversexed Pearl that her voluptuousness ordains her to a life of sexual temptation:

"Sin Killer: Pearl? You can be a woman of sin or a woman of God. Which is it to be?
Pearl: I want to be a good girl.
Sin Killer: And remember that the devil is always aimin' to hog-tie ya. Sometimes he comes ghostin' over the plains in the shape of a sneakin' rustler. And sometimes, beggin' your pardon Laura Belle, he stakes out the homes of the worthy and the god-fearin'. Pearl, you're curved in the flesh of temptation. Resistance is gonna be a darn sight harder for you than for females protected by the shape of sows. Yes siree, bob. You gotta sweeten yourself with prayer. Pray till you sweat, and you'll save yourself from eternal hell-fire. You understand me girl?
Pearl: Yes sir."

"Well, we start tomorrow. We're goin' to Missouri with ten thousand head. Most of you men have come back to Texas from the war. You came back to nothing. You find your homes gone, your cattle scattered, and your land stolen by carpetbaggers. Well there's no money and no work because there's no market for beef in the South. But there is in Missouri. So we're goin' to Missouri...Cumberland didn't make it. No one else has. That's the reason I'm here. I want you all to know what you're up against. You probably already know, but I want to make sure you do. We got a thousand miles to go. Ten miles a day'll be good. Fifteen will be luck. It'll be dry country, dry wells when we get to 'em. There'll be wind, rain. There's gonna be Indian Territory - how bad I don't know. When we get to Missouri, there'll be border gangs. It's gonna be a fight all the way. But we'll get there. Nobody has to come along. We'll still have a job for ya when we get back. Now remember this! Every man who signs on for this drive agrees to finish it. There'll be no quittin' along the way, not by me and not by you! There's no hard feelings if you don't want to go. But just let me know now."

The character who spoke that line was Mr Macon, owner of the saloon (played by Donnelly Rhodes), according to several on-line sources, one of which follows:

"Butch's partner is introduced in a similar, sepia-toned sequence filmed in close-up. During a blackjack card game in Macon's Saloon - a typically cliched Western scene, Butch's partner, a dead-panning, silent, dim-witted, mustached, dark-hatted cardsharp 'The Sundance Kid' [(30 year old Robert Redford in a breakout role) not identified by name until later] deals cards to other players at a gaming table. One opponent named Tom folds his hands and asks for credit from the saloon owner/gunman Mr. Macon (Donnelly Rhodes), but is denied. Off-camera, Macon confronts the mustached player:
Macon: Well, it looks like you just about cleaned everybody, fella - you haven't lost a hand since you got the deal. What's the secret of your success?
Sundance: (mono-syllabically) Prayer.
Macon: Let's just you and me play.
Sundance plays against his final, sole opponent - a professional gambler and gunman and the only one left at the table. When Macon busts, he accuses Sundance of cheating while the card player is raking in his winnings and stacking everything neatly in piles: "You're a helluva card player fella. I know, cause I'm a helluva card player. And I can't even spot how you're cheatin'." Although Sundance attempts to ignore the insulting accusation, other players back off. Macon stands with his immense hand readied by his holstered gun: "The money stays - you go."

Did some more research on this, and it seems I owe the apology.
Sam Elliot was in the movie and did have speaking parts, but according to one site that I visited, it was not Sam that had the face down with the Kid.

I offer my humble apologies.

Hey, Rawhide,

Find I'm having more and more attacks of "Oldtimer's Disease".  Just the other day on this thread I botched a response pertaining to John Wayne's character in "The Shootist".  'Bout decided the only way I won't get in trouble is to keep quiet, and that's no fun.  'Sides, I've always believed the only folks what don't ever make a mistake are them what don't ever do or say anything.  Growin' old ain't much fun, but I'm still convinced it beats the alternative.

Howdy,

I'm convinced that the only thing in life that makes it worth living IS making mistakes and owning up to them.. forgiving others, ourselves and moving on..

Bringin' this one over from page 3 'fore it gets lost.  Surprised none of you John Wayne fans have jumped on it yet.

“Joey, there's no living with, with a killing. There's no going back from it. Right or wrong, it's a brand, a brand that sticks. There's no going back. Now you run on home to your mother and tell her, tell her everything's alright, and there aren't any more guns in the valley.”

You're right on with the movie, Sidekick.  Now if you can just figure out who had the lead role, and his character's name, you'll have it all.
