Hey all,
I'ma lookin' ta git mah first "rig". I like the "Spaghetti western" look. So naturally I looked at the El Paso Saddlery "Spaghetti" setup. I also like the looks of the Glack Hills "Kid" rig (which I can have made up in "rough out"). Now the El Paso comes with steel lining (I know it's stainless steel, but I'm not sure if the holster is fully lined or just the "throat" area). What do y'all think of steel lined rigs? I want this thing to be really sturdy and last a long time. Any recommendations?

Good questions.
I'm not a fan of the steel lined rig. In fact, any well made leather rig is gonna last a long time. The steel can put strain on the leather and cause wear marks. Steel is also a development of the fast draw movement and will cause a lot of wear on your pistol's finish.
Regarding El Paso, I have heard that they are a bit slow on their turnaround. You might check on the other boards, to hear from folks who have actual experience with EPS.
Black Hills is good stuff. Rudy has an excellent reputation.
Most of my stuff is San Pedro and there is a fella on the auction boards, goes by MrBisley. He sells SPS stuff at a good price and has it in stock, so you can get it quick.
I hope you get more input.. there is a lot of quality leather being made out there.

I'll agree with Big Hext and shy away from the steel rig.
I have a Black Hills "Tombstone" rig that I am very pleased with and would highly recommend Rudy. But my decison would have to be made know what guns you have and what your period constume looks like.
If you do go with BHL as Rudy for a discount. He usually has a rig on special and if you ask he may give you the discount on any rig--he did for me.. ;D

I'm sorta goin' fer the "Spaghetti Western" simple drifter kinda look (jeans, boots, old hat.....nuthin' fancy. No conchos etc). My irons are 5.5" Vaqueros. What weight of leather is most desireable for holsters? I'm just trying to do as much research as possible here. As to the steel lining, from what I understand the El Paso "Spaghetti" is just steel in the holster "mouth". I don't know if that changes anything or not. Are there any other manufactures y'all recommend?

I have an El Paso Duke rig with both a cross draw and a straight left draw holster. The quality of their work is great, and they were within a week of delivery time that they told me up front. Their holsters are fully lined and fit the pistols (mine are Ruger Bisley Vaqueros) great.

San Pedro Saddlery is hard to beat. I have a pair of the "Duke" holsters and on of the canvas "Desert" belts. The belt is made out of Fire hose material and is lighter than all leather. It sorta looks like the "Duke" gunrig, only with two pistols instead of one. Mr Bisleys auctions can be found on the Auction Arms website under the Cowboy Action Shooting catagory.

My Black Hills rig is being made as I type this. I wanted something that I could use in CAS and in Cowboy Fast Draw. Rudy is putting on some special touches that I asked for on the double "Montana" and at a price that would be hard to be.

Hey, Pard you have really put us on the spot here; and so you'll get quite a mixture of 'answers'. Think about your pistols, how you shoot (both strongside, strong and cross, and such) then do LOTS of shopping; and don't be afraid to ask questions of the various leathermakers. In the final analysis it'll be what you like and what works for you. You've gotten some really good pointers already -- so go for it and 'shop till you drop'.
Check out the folks in the Chronicle and other CAS publications, most have web sites and you can just have lots and lots of fun just browsing. Good luck, it won't be easy!

Thanks guys! I just joined a week ago, so I haven't even gotten my first "Chronicle" yet. So far, I'm planning on a double strong side setup. I'd really like to get my setup sooner rather than later, but I'll do as much "research" as possible. Hopefully, there will be some vendors at the big shindig here in MD in June. I'd like to see as much stuff "live" as possible. I think I'll call up El Paso and Black Hills on Thursday and pick their brains a bit.
This brings me to my next question. I really like the "roughout" look of leather, especially for a "Spaghetti" setup. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to roughout leather? Not many makers seem to offer it. Is there reason why? Is it because it's just a pain in the arse, or is there a more practical reason?
I've heard El Paso can be a bit slow, BUT other than the wait, how is their quality?
Anyone want to show me pics of their rigs so I can get some idears?

I would suggest that you email Rick (Mr Bisley) at MrBisley@aol.com
Ask him what San Pedro leather he has in stock. His prices are usually very competitive. (tell him I sent ya). I'd further recommend that you buy a pair of holsters that fit your guns and cartridge. Shoot for a while and get your rough out leather rig.
Then you can sell the SPS stuff and get close to what you paid new.

Hey! Florabama, Rudy says "hi" and yes he does give discounts. Thanks for the recommendation! I was looking at his website yesterday. Then your suggestion today to another Pard helped me make up my mind (such that it is!) ;D

Thanks for the help Tombstone ::). FWIW, I also emailed "Big Ed" at San Pedro. I figured I got enough recommendations for him , so his stuff must be good. I thought maybe one of his Tombstone Gunfighter style rigs, but get it lined (I know the Tombstone is 10oz. unlined leather, but i figure lining it would make it extra heavy.), in roughout with maybe that little "Spaghetti" buckle that's on the El Paso. We'll see.

Sure I've responded, at least I thunk I did. I contacted Mr. Bisley and he didn't have anything that particularly "grabbed" me. You (or anyone else) don't happen to have any pics of your rigs, do you?
