.30-40 Krag Brass
« on: May 21, 2016, 09:30:22 PM »
Gentlemen,
I'm trying to get a friend of mine involved in this game, and I've found him a Krag.  Now I'm trying to find brass for him.  Is anyone making it anymore?  I know it's usually in limited runs, but no one seems to have any right now.  Anyone know what's going on?

Good luck on your quest, Ned. I've been looking for a while now and can't find any. However there is 303 brass available that can be used to form 30-40.

30-40 brass is as scarce as hen's teeth. When you do find it be prepared to spend some cash. I saw one auction for 50 new Win cases go for $150.  :o I have resigned myself to use mostly .303 Brit brass for my Krag. Cabela's has PPU .303 Brit on sale for $39.88 per 100. http://www.cabelas.com/product/GRAF-AND-SONS-PRVI-RIFLE-BRASS/2012850.uts I bought 300.

I have a friend looking for some as well.  If any one finds any for sale please post the info (after you place your own order) here for the rest of us.  I have what I think is plenty but I guess I'll need to buy some more if I find that it's available.  I would think at the pressures we're shooting, it will last more or less forever.

I wish PRVI would start making it.  They seem to make a lot of oddball stuff!

Them, or Starline.

There's some brass and ammo on GB right now, seems like the price for the loaded ammo is about the same as brass.

That'd be my suggestion, look for the loaded ammo, and shoot it up.  Perhaps Remington will do another run when the stuff on the shelves is gone!  And yes, I'm hoping PPU picks up the slack here someday.

Ammo Seek only found one source:

http://ammoseek.com/ammo/30-40-krag

Gunbroker has some auctions:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Rifle-Ammunition/BI.aspx?Keywords=30-40+krag

The one that has 169 mixed rounds might not be too bad a deal. Some of it is surplus, if no collector wanted any of it (it's loose rounds, no bandoleer or boxed)  a person could pull the bullets, kill the primers and deprime(in case they're mercuric) anneal them and reload.

They also have some auctions for brass, but it's all pushing $2 to $2.50 per case.

Has anyone here actually used .303 brass to form .30-40?  How did it work?  Seems like it would be a bit short.  Did that cause any issues?

Its a little short, but for lead bullet loads it works just fine.  That long necked Krag chamber is very forgiving.

One more reason to love the Krag!  If he gets into this, I'll just have him get .303 brass if Krag brass isn't available.  Fortunately, I bought a lot of brass years ago, so I should be fine.  (I personally like to have a lifetime supply of brass for everything I shoot.)

I have full length sized 303 with 30-40 dies. They are about 1/8" shorter than 30-40 brass. I 'll use it for lead load. I'll use my 30-40 brass for jacketed loads.
