RE M14 Honor Guards, guess they needed to keep the rifles battle ready.  A blank adapter just looks wrong at a funeral and installing a blank barrel would make the rifles non battle ready.  Who knows if the guards at the tomb carry loaded weapons or if they would just bayonet someone attempting to damage the tomb.  I for one would not try to find out

The M1s we used had a port installed at the muzzle to restrict the gas, and allow enough back-pressure to operate the piston.  Still "bark" pretty well.  Needless to say the could NOT be used for a DCM Match...basically a built-in BFA.    I guess someone decided that the "ping" wouldn't be appropriate sound at a funeral?

I think only the VFW in Independence KS have these (they loan to the MCL as well).  The American Legion here in Coffeyville uses 03's and our VFW (which I haven't participated with) has M1's but I'm not sure if they have to manually operate.

Rummaging through the AmLegion's gun locker, I found they have a very nice collection:  4-M1903's, 4-M1917s (two are chrome plated), 3-Krags, and even 2-'98 Mausers (NO M1's at all).  Also, remarkably, a Drum Major's baton - brass and wood, about 4 1/2 ft long......

For an old vet who carried an M-1 in battle, the 'Ping' would be VERY appropriate!

That iconic sound could never be forgotten. It is in the same category as the 'Rack-Rack of a '97 pump.

More than likely they were more concerned about loosing clips rather than being concerned about the "ping".

I doubt that would have been a concern. Most cemeteries are grassy, the clips don't travel far from the shooter and there's a gazillion of them out there.

I think I may have a few 30-06 empties stashed somewhere from either the Cook of Tecumseh VFW firing their 03's Memorial Day.   

Now my brother and I keep telling each other we can't mug the VFW for their rifles.   ;)

Hi, I got all 21 from Dad's funeral in 2011 in Illinois.  Youngest was a 21 year old girl though.
