Looking for something different
« on: November 12, 2021, 07:32:25 AM »
I' m no fan of Kydex carry holsters, and prefer leather in every case for gun carry.

I saw the carved Brill style, in another post and thought that is what I'm looking for this Springfield EMP.
Of course I do nut carve  :(   https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=66187.0

I have this holster (John Saffran made for a Glock 19) that fits this EMP nicely, and I added the strap for a secure retention.

But I want to find a maker to produce my vision in a floral carved holster for the EMP.

A Brill holster is a good choice. If no one here answers your need, you could contact Will Ghormley and probably have him make one for you since he is working up a pattern set for one.

I had another look at this thread. My first comment is that Major 2's holster might need something to prevent the pouch being pulled out of the loops, but Heh! It might work OK. I looked in Packing Iron and Cowboys & the Trappings of the Old West. I only found one holster for the 1911 at p 132 of PI. something like it would make a neat BBQ holster. I didn't see any Brill designs in either reference, but the closest in design are the Texas Gulf Coast designs found at pages 98 & 105 of PI.

Just observations. I made one "civilian" holster for my 1911, A lined pouch without finger scoop and one strap with an oval nickel buckle to secure the half flap. Sorry, my picture posting skills are long forgotten. (No finger scoop, as I was doing a bit of IPSC at the time and did use it at a very few Wild Bunch matches.

The Brill won't pull out of the loop because the toe of the holster is stitched to the skirt.

Marshal; I knew that; My comment was directed to major's stubby Mex holster. From what I've read about the Brill design, it would be an ideal solution to Major 2s requirements.

Sir Charles  thank for you comments, I think the Brill is splendid....

I've looked a the El Paso  'Austin" holster but was informed it 6-8 months wait  :-\  I moved on
I email Rick Bachman but he has not responded ...

The  stubby Mex holster has no issue with  lifting out of the loops ( the EMP is not that snug, hence the strap )

Its a neat holster, and  OK for open carry , on a trail perhaps . Still it is not quite what I'm after....

The Brill could fit the bill or the 1930 Austin , I still would want the snap strap

I may recontract El Paso and skip the the carving and see what the time frame might be

I know I do not want any of the so call OWB belt slide styles

I believe a Brill style holster (although difficult to find) would be great for this type. I have seen them for many different styles of SAA, 1911, Colt DA and others beign worn by early 20th century Texas Rangers.

The Threepearsons design would be a nice fit for such a gun also.

I had emailed the Rick Bachman but he has not replied, probably should contact Will G.
El Paso , responded with 8 -16 weeks on the standard , non carved , not extras version  :-\

maybe I might work up a pattern and give it a go myself....

I have not quite made my mind up  perhaps one or the other of these....

Scaled down a tad for the shorter barrel....

I look at it sorta like this ..I can grill a steak and do it justice ...sometime you just want to go out to fine steakhouse .
I can make a Holster that would do..... but maybe I need to treat myself to a Pro....
I did just that for my C96 , and was very satisfied ...

I'm leaning heavily toward this H.H. Heiser style 1st photo  , over the S.D. Myers 2nd photo  ..... thought the Brill is still in the running....  any opinions ?

Between the Heiser and the Meyers, I'd take the Heiser because of the stitched toe. That's a mighty good looking holster. That will have less of a tendency to snag clothing or push your jacket out at the bottom, making it less conspicuous than the Heiser when carrying. Probably better in that regard than a Brill, too. Less leather in it, as well, so it wouldn't weigh quite as much, although that's a nit-picky point. If you're going to wear it out in the open, then any of the three would do fine and it's just your preference for looks.

The plan is CCW under a light jacket ...So your points are consistent with mine...
It also the reason I moved away from a carved pattern , who would know ? , except me and I'd not have the view anyway   :-\

I have all but ruled out the S.D. Myers pattern ,  I have made a  Brill pattern I may give are try ....
But I think the H.H. Heiser style is my Daisy .

Another guy that is doing the Brill style holster is Barranti Leather in Pennsylvania.

He does excellent work but is not cheap. Here is a Brill style holster that he has in stock on his page but it is for a SAA.

He also does the Myres style holsters.

That's nice alright , but a left hand (only one left ) also @ 4.75 is about 1 " to long  :-\
not to mention his cost ....

I thing the Mex loop will be sort of odd looking on a shorter holster   :-\

I really like the Brill , just not sure its the best for the EMP , hence my pattern work up,  if I like it then I may get the Brill

A carved holster would be there in the event you want to go without a jacket. I look forward to seeing what you finally decide on.
