Wondered about this the last time I poked myself with a needle
when did thimbles make an appearance, or did they just evolve for hollow bones sllipped over your finger.

They go way back before our period, 1000 AD or so. They were a common trade item with the indians, most were brass till nickel plating became common around the time of the civil War.
