This is a Buggy lap quilt. (Not sure you would even term this a quilt in the traditional sense.) It is smaller than a bed quilt, and very simply made out of wool strips with batting. The pattern, to me, reminds me of the woven "Chiefs Blankets". I have no doubt that it probably did double duty in open horseless carriages or just as a throw when sitting on the veranda. Around 1900.

I am surprised to see metal eyelets on a garment made that early.

John, I ain't no lady, but it is a bustier pronounced boost-e-ay, it serves the same purpose as a corset. And yes matal eye-lets and gromets date way back, not sure how far, but before that.

This is one of four that we have, all of this pattern type, but the colors of tiny print pieces are different on each quilt. Two were finished, one has just the top sewn together and was never sewn together with the batting and the bottom layer, and the fourth was just all the little squares carefully cut out and pinned together by color group in a box. We gave my niece the unassembled one to finish.
All ca. 1910-15.

Sorry, I couldn't resist this one since Lone Gunman mentioned the 48-star flag.

This flag was sewn by my Great Aunt, a teacher, for her classroom for the school year 1912-13, to the 'new pattern'. She died in the great Influenza epidemic of 1917.

Here is a couple I got done for Christmas presents.  I have a couple more that need finished but they knew their present would be late.

The first one is a variant of a 9 square, my wife picke out the colors for it, but I made it anyway, it is for my Great Niece who was born in late July.  It is 3 feet X 5 feet in size.  I'm going to try to get a better picture sometime, but this is what I got on Christmas Eve.

This second one is a doll crazy quilt I made for another Great-Niece who is 6.  It is 18 inches X 14 inches in size.  She is one of the sweetewst kids you've ever seen and thinks I'm the coolest guy she has ever met.  I got all kinds of hugs for this one. ;D

Here is a Super King Size (120"x120") patchwork quilt that my wife made for some friends of ours.  The pieces are all hand sewn.  The maroon border has the birth dates of their 10 kids plus their anniversary date embroidered on it.  My grand daughter sewed the border on it and we hand tied it off at work using the conference tables.

Neat quilts.

That would make a great seminar/workshop at a Convention, everyone that signs up brings cloth remnants and a quilt is made over a day's time, the finished product then used as a raffle prize at the National, or similar, as a donation.

John, just how big do you think that quilt would be? ;)  It took Joan over 6 months to hand piece the top of that quilt.

Perhaps what could be done is a seminar demonstrating the hand piecing and then everyone who wanted to participate could make a square (say a 3' by 3') at home and then it could be pieced together at the next convention and maybe even put together and hand tied off.

Sound's more likely to me. I know sewing takes me forever, no matter what the project.

I suppose that's how they did it when they had those quilting bees. I guess they worked on the same quilt over the course of several sessions, huh? :)

George, when I showed that to Joan she said it was "sacrilegious" to quilters.  No more wine for you!

This was my baby quilt.

These stockings were made by my better-half from an old quilt.
