Title: 454 Casull... OH Please!... Do Tell ALL!
Post by: yeti76620 on May 09, 2012, 08:55:41 PM
To the All Knowing,

I've a newly acquired Bad Arse Ruger Super Redhawk and I intend to use it to stop TANKS!........  LOL

I would like to pick the brains of all my fellow "Peace through Superior Firepower" believers to learn me up some reload'n tips of Mr. Dick Casull's Mutant 45 Long Colt round.

I've got questions of curiosities and need'n some recipes using home cast "lead heads"....... W/O going Stupid Crazy....

Shall we chat?

Thanks to ya'll,

Yeti76620

I have a model 83 Freedom Arms and a Rossi 1892, both in 454 Casull. Both will beat the hell out of you! The pistol was so severe that after only four rounds of full house 300g loads, I pulled the barrel and made a muzzle brake for it. (on the fourth round it destroyed the scope I had mounted von the revolver!)
A large bear has fallen to the revolver's fury....

The rifle is just a brutal, but a bit more manageable.............

My loads are hard cast 300g, gas checked bullets with a whole bunch of H110 under them. Amazing accuracy and they turn cinder blocks into sand!

Lots of H110 and a heavy crimp. When you get used to that little darling step up to a 460.

AAAHHHhhhhh......  THIS is what I want to hear!  PLEASE PLEASE ...please please please share some MORE!

Sorry Master Cliff...  The 460 and the S&W 500 are semantic attempts to top the the Casull round......  They just cost much more and I've NO Doubt that I can get the 454 to DESTROY ANYTHING just as well as the 460 or 500.....   ;)  8)

I have read here of a boat load of H110 and a 300 gr boooolit.  Configure this lead head fer me and what is a boaty load of H110 'er 296  ???  ???  ???  ???   WHAT ELSE.............. :o

Rbertalotto....  That Freedom Arms piece I have shot and it is one awesome SA.......  Tries to crease Ye skull with a "twist" from the rifling....  I Gotts Ta have 6 rounds...  LOL

A question.....  Why a small rifle primer and not small pistol mag??......  Especially the CCI sm pistol mag... those tough li'l buggers will hold pressure....

Don't shoot it without ear plugs, I know of a fellow that was hunting with one and ruptured his ear drum shooting next to a tree. They have a crack like a 357 on steroids.

Actually I prefer a Ruger 480 or the 475 Linebough to the 454 or 460. They get the job done just as well and they punch a bigger hole with less noise so I can at least hunt without ear protection. The 480's are more of a boom like a 44 but the 454 and 460 are a deafening crack.

I've had SRH's, Raging Bulls in all the big calibers, I've had S&W performance center 460 and 500 and I actually prefer to hunt with a Super Redhawk 480.

A friend of mine had a Freedom Arms 454. It was an awesome gun but I actually liked the Ruger just as well or better.

The advantage the 454 does have is you can even shoot your cowboy 45's in the same gun to just play around and have fun with the Super Redhawk.

One nice way to tame the 454 is shoot them in the 460 performance center, now that makes a nice package. The 460 with a full house round is like a stick of dynamite going off in your hand, it's really no fun to shoot and just overkill for a handgun.

Master Cliff,

Nice stories.... have ya reloaded' 'em?

I haven't any 454 rounds at this time { the reason for this thread } but I did shoot my 45 colt cowboy bangers in it.... as a one hander this DA is a nail driver at 30 feet [ 200 gr LRNFP 5gr Clays ] as the trigger squeezes off just right for this ol' Bubba's  right hand...

I reload everything I shoot, my SRH's have never had a factory round in them except when it was test fired at the factory.

Just check the Hodgden, Speer, Hornady load info depending on what bullet and powder combo your wanting to run. I use H110 in nearly all my big guns but I do have a SRH 44 mag that for some odd reason likes 296 better with a Speer Gold Dot bullet.

I have also had really good results with Lil Gun in the 480 pushing both Hornady and Speer bullets. I can't recall ever using it in a 454.

If I had to choose one powder to start working up a load in it I'd start with H110. It's hard to beat in the magnums.

Fish'n for some Ideas to kill tanks....   :D

I have seen the missmash from the powder sites.....  look'n for peoples "Favorites"...   ;)

Never shot lead in a 454, I would think leading would be a problem cause they come out the muzzlel a rockin.
