Well since we are showing off. I do not do Cowboy leather but I do leather work.
I specialize in reproduction comic book costumes.

Here is my finest one I did for myself that I wore (and made Variety Magazine to boot) - copy of Halle Berry's X-men movie costume

Great work Doc, do you not think there would be enough money in speacialty western leather clothing to be profitable?  I have seen some staggering prices on Duke type vests, botas and other items that would fit your specialty style of working in light weight leathers.

Attention...
Irish Red O'Toole will now be sporting this on the range.   ;D

There is a matching shotgun belt and cartridge slides on the way.

If he scratches this there's gonna be hell to pay... ;D

Beautiful KC.......Really nice job!

I really liked the color on that one.  What is it are there more than one color used.  I'm wanting to do a almost Ox blood color and then, go back over with a darker brown to settle in the low areas like antiquing,  Maybe even take off some of the dark with an alcohol rub to bring out the red in the highlights.  You got just what I'm looking for!

Rap,
I used a pigmented neatsfoot oil first then went over it all with a medium brown antiquing stain.  The stain settles in the low areas and then I use a horsehair wheel to burnish and remove the stain.   The neatfoot oil is gonna stay my secret. ;)

Hi All,

Just finished my second 1911 holster.  What do you think?  Any advice?  Learned even more.  Next one will incorporate these lessons.

Thanks!

Those look good. My only advice at this time is to keep crankin' them out. That's the best way to improve our skills. I seldom make one exactly like the one before because I always have something I want to do differently. One thing I like to do on that type of holster is to sew in a small wedge of leather between the sides at the top around the trigger guard area so the holster doesn't grab the pistol as much so they're easier to pull out and the bluing doesn't get worn off so fast. Another way to accomplish the same thing is to put a strip of leather all the way down the stitch line between the sides to make the whole holster easier to fit to the gun. It isn't better necessarily, but it gives you another option.

Howdy everyone!

I'm new to this group, and to leatherworking. I completed my first project which is a Slim Jim holster from a Will Ghormley pattern. The engraved design is very close to a photo of a holster in Packing Iron.

That's an outstanding first holster, Dark Star. I really like the way you carved it to look period correct. I've been trying to decide what to do on a pair for myself. I'll have to give that style of carving good consideration.

Been doing leather work for about 9 years for myself and now I've finally got the better half to start shootin so I had to made her something worthy for her. And I wanted it to be very girlie. She was very pleased on how it came out. ;D
The only Red leather that I could find was embossed with a alligator print, so seeing I didn't need to do any carving, I added a few spots.

Outstanding work!  What kind of carving is that?  Does it have a name?

Thanks. I call it Albert.  ;D

Seriously though, I don't know if it has a particular name, but it's done with a swivel knife alone. The design on my holster is from a Will Ghormley pattern and almost exactly a duplicate of the design on the holster on page 86 in Packing Iron. In fact, I scanned that photo and managed to make a duplicate of that flower engraving, but to do it right will take a finer swivel knife blade than the one I have. So far the most time consuming part of this is saving for and then ordering/waiting for tools and supplies to arrive. Meanwhile I'm scanning the photos, tracing the patterns and then completing the missing portions by using the visible half as a guide. I'd love to be able to see the entire original item one day.

I am curious to learn more about this style (I've seen it referred to as a "Wedding Band" design somewhere) and right now I'm trying to find more information about it as well as border tooling examples. I also have a copy of "Cowboys and the Trappings of the Old West" and "Peacemakers" that show some examples, I'm looking for a good example of a period correct belt to go with the holster.

Thanks for the kind words Marshall Will. It was made for my '58 Remmie and I felt that style would be appropriate for the time period of the gun.

I have lots to learn but I'm enjoying myself  ;D

Howdy Pards.

I have some pictures that I took with my digital camera.  Today the Daughter and Son in law came over for crab and clams.  I got him to put the pic into a file I might be able to e mail them from.  I have no hosteing sight but I might be able to send them to a Pard that does.  Can I get a hand from a Pard that does?   Thanx.

Kid, Pard thanks for the help.  I tried but my size was too big.  I left a note about that on the other half of this thread.  "what happened....."  and The Marshal offered to resize them for me if I sent them to him.  I just got through doing that, so I guess that the pictures will be in that thread.  Look for them later after The Marshal gets a chance to resize them.

Regards, Beaumont  (Added)  I made these two sets of holsters for the Prize Table at our annual match, Standoff at Smokey Point in Sept
