Title: SASS and GAF together.
Post by: Bow View Haymaker on November 03, 2008, 04:01:29 AM
I am putting together our match sceduel for next year.

I wanted to do another mini-muster but I've decieded why limit the GAF to just one match?
So we will be offring the GAF battle rifle classes along with the standerd SASS classes at all of our matches next year.  WE really don't gve an overall award so each class will stand on it's own.
We usually shoot 6 stages so to even the time per shoter out a bit, the GAF shooters will have to do a full pistol reload on about half the stages and the single shot rifle shooters will shoot only about half the rifle targets on those stages with the pistol reload.  On the ones that they don't do a pistol reload they would get to shoot all of the rifle targets.   We may set up a seperate set of targets for the rifle caliber shooters at a longer range.    I have even thought of seting up paper targets for the rifle shooters that may want to shoot jacketed bulllets.

My Idea for this is a chance for the SASS shooters to see how the GAF battle rifle classes work and how much fun they can be.  Another benifiit might be that I can attract some of our non-cowboy club members out to the match if they can bring out their Krage or Trapdoor rifle and only need one handgun and shoot with us.  And also to help pormote GAF in general.

Our matches are usually pretty small with one small posse so  I don't think anyone will mind a few more shooters or doing something different.  We can handle it target wise OK.  The biggest chalange will be getting the word out and informing people of what is going on.

WE will be shooting this every 5th Sunday next year plus a couple of other weekends to be determined yet.
Any thoughts or ideas on this will be welcomed.

And yes, your all invited.

This is a good idea,  I know you've gone over the requirements, and hopefully printed some out for folks to read.  Any questions I can answer would be welcome here.

Just don't let anyone get carried away when you tell them that the the shoots are set to NCOWS standards.  Safety is safety: be it SASS or NCOWS.

Too many people get caught up thinking that NCOWS = stitch police or other nonsense.  The scoring is basically the difference.

NCOWS and SASS AREN'T in competition; they co-exist with many of the same people and ideals.  Let's have some safe shooting fun!

Well,
We aren't an ncows club, we are a SASS club so this is going to be more in line with SASS standards instead on NCOWS if that is OK with the GAF officers.  We follow SASS saftey and scoring rules.  This would basicly just be A GAF match run along iwth a SASS match.  Two diffent sets of catagories shooting the same stages together.

The GAF Grand Musters have used NCOWS safety standards because we have been shooting at an NCOWS club range.

If you use a SASS club range, then by all means use their rules.

Some GAF members have conducted GAF side-matches at SASS matches - and used SASS safety rules in doing so.

The primary distinction between GAF and SASS or NCOWS is that we base our categories on the rifle, not the pistol, and we focus on shooting military issue type firearms (with the exception of the Scout category).  Since we don't have our own ranges, we follow the safety rules of the host club.

That pretty much sums it up!

Outstanding,
It is inthe planns then.  so the GAF classes will be available at all our monthly matches in 2009 along with the SASS catagories.
I may try to write something for the Cowboy Chronicle outlining the idea.
I think we will also offer Wild Bunch, as a catagorie to just to get even more interest.

Thanks for the input guys.

That'll also mean more bullets!

You see, I have decided that as an avid shooter, I'm a conservationist who actually DOES something ... I'm putting minerals BACK into the soil!

This is an excellent concept!!  We need to encourage more clubs to try this. It could increase attendance and income for the clubs.

I will add an announcement to the "Dispatches" page on the GAF web site.

Pitspitr, How about a BAR to go along with the Thompson?

Well the Thompson is a pistol caliber rifle...  Don't think it fits with the wild bunch concept.   We do have a pretty active USPSA/IDPA tape group of shooters at the club  (Second Saturdays)  That the Zootshooters might fit in better with like a vintage class or something to that effect.  they do a 3 gun shoot once or twice a year.  This deserves some more pondering.

Well, I put an 1911 on lay away last night. It's not quite PC since it's a copy of the Parkerized GI 1911 A1, but at least it's not a fully tricked out stainless steel race gun. Looks like I'll get to shoot the Wild Bunch side match at the GM this fall (and of course the AZSA matches if I can find any) I'm not sure if I should thank Rattlesnake Jack or curse him for sending me the link to the AZSA video and getting me interested in another shooting venue.

Pitspitr, I could shoot that BAR from the hip, from the shoulder, or prone with the bipod.   What about a water cooled Browning 30?  I'm geeting excited about this "Over There" concept.

TL

Right now the 2 day, stand alone, WWI Wild Bunch Match is up in the air.

The following is an excerpt from an e-mail I got from Major Matt Lewis in reply to my question about it's status and his situation with the sprint layoffs, " The way things are playing out though, I am thinking the WW1 match is going to be a "No Go" because if I am laid off, I will be protecting income, and if I am not, I will be working my ass off."

If it doesn't materialize we'll host a 4 stage wild bunch side match on Friday like we did in '08.

another Nebraska Mini-muster

April 25th, 2009

Defend Devil’s Drop

A Cowboy Action Shooting event in a remote scenic prairie setting.
Home cooked meals, friendly folks, and local history.

Located on Bow View Farm along the banks of the West Bow Creek
in eastern Knox County near Crofton Nebraska.
Take Hwy. 12  west from Crofton 1 mile to county blacktop, 550th  Ave. (old Hwy. 121) and go south on 550th  Ave. 3 ¾ miles across the Bow Creek bridge.  Turn west and follow the drive.

Saturday, April 25th    9:00AM sign up with a safety meeting at 9:30.
We will have 6 Main Match stages, and a hearty meal as well.
We’ll set up Friday and maybe get some practice in Friday evening.
We can finish things up Sunday morning with some extra fun matches.
We recognize the standard SASS categories, the GAF battle rifle class structure and a few other optional classes such as wild bunch and greenhorn.

The cost of this cowboy match is $20 per shooter.

Guns of the Old West:  single action revolvers, pistol caliber lever action rifles, military or buffalo rifles and old time shotguns.  Your score is your time plus penalties for misses and such.  Low score wins.  An honest effort to dress in appropriate “old west” style clothing is appreciated.  We will be following SASS safety and scoring rules as best we can for the Cowboy Action main match and side matches. With everyone pitching in everything should run smoothly.
