Title: Pietta 7-1/2"SAA in 44-40
Post by: PJ Hardtack on April 23, 2019, 04:28:42 PM
I just received my 7-1/2" Pietta SAA in 44-40. It is without doubt the best looking, best timed CAS gun I've ever owned!

I chose the case coloured frame with dark blued barrel and cylinder. It has poylmer ivory one piece grips that FIT like they were melted in place. The timing is perfect, the locking bolt popping up just before the locking notch. The trigger is more than acceptable out of the box.

My wife has a brace of blued 44-40 7-1/2" Pietta SAAs with case coloured frame and walnut grips, which are every bit as nice. Also a blued 7-1/2" Uberti 44-40 with laser engraving marked - "CUSTOM by ALDO UBERTI - ITALY". The engraving on the barrel/frame/cylinder is gold filled and the ejector rod housing is gold plated as well. The grip frame is brass. The front edge of the cylinder is not bevelled as are the Piettas. The timing is alright, but not as good as my new Pietta. It also prefers Winchester brass due to it's tight chambers. It has that ridiculous little screw in the hammer for the safety.

In any case, I've adopted it to shoot along with my new Pietta. Can't wait to shoot, hopefully tomorrow.

Now I'm loading 44-40s for our pistols and my rifles. Life is good, damn good!

PJ ...

Consider removing the last 3/32 or so of the Cylinder Base Pin.  Allows the base pin to seat fully (alla Colt) without stopping the hammer travel.  I also like to change the Main Spring to "Lee's Gunsmithing Gunfighter" spring sets.  I also install action Over Travel stops but you may not find a need or want to do that.

Pietta SAs ROCK!!

I may consider removing the end of the cylinder pin as you suggest, just in case ....  ;) As for any other mods right now, I'm of the "... if'n it ain't broke, don't fix it ..." school of thought. Haven't put a rd downrange with it and that ain't gonna happen for a few days as our range has been rented to local LEOs.

My wife's Pietta SAAs have after market springs and need Federal primers for reliable ignition. They creep me out. I want mine to ignite both CCI and the Russian hard shell primers I can buy for cheap.

"Over travel stops" are something new to me. Not being a 'speed merchant', I don't see the advantage.
