Title: Ultra rare "rainbow" gun set.
Post by: Buckaroo Lou on November 15, 2019, 11:46:21 PM
What caliber were these revolvers and how many sets were actually made?

Surely someone remembers.

To the best of my knowledge, only one set was made and I can't, for the life of me, remember the caliber(s).  The intention, as I recall, was to produce camouflage finishes for hunters.

Kinda neat, they don't even really look real.

Capt. John, for some reason .30 carbine comes to my mind. Would that have been the caliber?

Although I've seen that picture before I do not recall what caliber they were chambered for, or even if they were all the same. When I saw the picture the first time my thought was that it was a waste of perfectly good 7.5" SA revolvers. Can't say that opinion has changed with the passage of time.

YMMV,
Dave

I recall these ( actually that very photo )  were on an USFA info-gram in 2009

I recall just the one set however ----- I think the Tan  OD and Black oxide were on about additional 3 stand alone pieces.

The consciences was they might appeal to hunters ( if you used the search feature here on CAS City ) the comments are there .

They never sold a set or for that mater any particular one  , and I recall Don kept the set and later someone acquired them.

I believe the set was in 45  Colt ?.

Major 2, I tried the search feature but couldn't find the previous post about these revolvers. I was asked by an individual what caliber they were and couldn't remember so that is what prompted my original post. I too remember back some time ago these revolvers being discussed here on the forum.

They remind me of Ruger Wranglers with USFA grips on them.  One question.  WHY?

Possibly an attempt to balance out the Rodeo's lack of profitability? I would guess the Rainbow finish is cheaper to produce, akin to a Rodeo finish, but they were hoping to charge more for it.

I would think a Flattop Target or Shooting Master would make a better hunting gun. What is the Rainbow finish anyway? Cerrakote?

I don't know if this will help the conversation, but I did a quick Google image search for that photo and came up with a number of references:

If I came across one of these and could buy it cheap I?d refinish it with color case and blue! There?s no place for ugly SAA in my home.

Resurrection notice... These look similar to the colors of the "new" Ruger Wranglers.

Early on in this string Buckaroo Lou asked about the caliber(s) of the "rainbow guns" and wondered if they were .30 cal.  Don't know why I didn't throw out this tidbit of information way back then but here it is now:
I sincerely doubt that USFA (or any other manufacturer of traditional style SAA's) would have made a gun for the .30 cal carbine cartridge.  Why?  Ruger, as I recall, attempted it several years ago with their Blackhawk series and found that the gasses escaping from between the cylinder and the barrel breach were so excessive that they started to cut into the top strap of the frame.  Ruger quickly discontinued the .30 cal.
Does anyone else recall this or am I just getting senile in my dotage?  :-\

Ruger had problems with the .357 Maximum.  This was a high velocity round intended for silhouette shooting.  They quit making the .357 Maximum after they started encountering top strap erosion.  They have made lots of .30 Carbines.  Biggest problem with them is that they are LOUD.  If you go to the Ruger website they are still cataloged.

Thanks, Pettifogger!  I forgot all about that "loud" factor.  Maybe I was confusing that .357 max with the .30 carbine round.

We did some single actions in 30 carbine.  7 1/2" barrel.  Like alot of the stuff we did, we didn't do to many.  It seems there were all Dome blue.

Slightly off topic, but related to Pettifogger's comment about the 357 Max. (blame him):

I have a Pietta Remington NMA with a .45 Colt (not LC) conversion cylinder and, believe it of not, I am getting gas cutting on the cylinder pin from shooting cowboy loads. Soft steel? I don't know, but it is now a science experiment to see how much it will progress.

FYI

My Pietta Remington's are getting gas cutting on the cylinder pin just from shooting black powder round ball and the occasional conical.

Re: 30 Carbine, I bid and lost on a USFA .30 Carbine 7 1/2" barrel blue/CCH. It would have been my first USFA and now I am super glad I didn't win. I won a Custer Battlefield .45 Colt a little while later. Kinda wish I had waited for a blue/CCH bp frame but a Custer is much better than a .30 Carbine IMHO.
