stuck screws
« on: June 09, 2020, 11:47:19 AM »
Has anyone ever used a soldering iron to heat up a screw to try and loosen it? I have three I am soaking in Kroil after which I will try a 3/8 hand impact wrench?
Thanks,
Reno

I’ve never had to deal with tuck screw.  ::)  If it was stuck the heat may help draw the oil in and after it cooled it may come loose with the impact.

It could not hurt to try, but I am not sure if a soldering iron will transfer enough heat.
In the past I have filed the point of a 10 penney nail flat, held the nail in vice grips and heated to red, then applied
the tip to the screw. The one time I did it, it worked for me. Also used that method to "spot anneal" hard steel so I could drill it.

good luck, if this saga continues you may need to drill it out.

Thanks to all for the advice. It's out. Let it soak with Kroil, used 3/8 hand impact wrench.

Reno I was just yanking your chain all in good fun.
The Kroil and heat idea might work, but have a good gunsmith hollow ground screwdriver bit.
My disassembly of a new gun usually requires on a screw somewhere an impact driver and hammer.
Good luck

Howdy Bunk, how ya doin?  Reno mentioned in the 4th post that he got it out.  You may now sleep better.
