Tang

My rifle does not have the top hole drilled and tapped for a tang sight. Is that a normal on Uberti rifles to not have the hole? Also, what would be the best tang sight for a 76. I know I said I didn't like them, but last week while shooting, especially the handguns, I noticed the sights weren't working very well.  . So I guess I'll need to get them fixed. Thoughts?

I will check mine and come back to ya - dont remember needing to drill mine (Uberti 45/75) - but five years or more - lotta things done and not remembered 
made the tang sight for mine (something I wanted to do for ages) but had a marbles on it for starters.

When I first got my Uberti '76, I installed a Marbles tang sight, and though I shot better with it than with the iron issued sights, I didn't like the looseness or the lack of being able to go back to original sight settings.  So I sold that sight and installed the MVA midrange tang sight with Hadley disc.  MUCH BETTER!!  I cannot remember if my tang was drilled and tapped, or not???  I do that sort of thing as a matter of course, so it's not a biggie for me.  I also restocked it almost immediately, with better wood, oil finish and shotgun buttstock. Oh, and I installed a sling swivel to the nose piece and a stud in the butt for the sling.  Here's both sights on that rifle...

Well! I feel like a dope. My rifle does have a top hole on the tang. Altho it looks rather small.

I went through sight options for my 76 & settled on a Marbles modular type. Figured this was a fairly authentic type of sight most common on a hunting rifle in the latter 1800s. This sight can give good results between 200-300 yds. I'm currently using the factory front sight but believe an apature style is needed for better consistency in alignment & therefore accuracy. I'm waffling between getting a beech style combo or an apature with replaceable inserts (similar as that on my Sharps).

I will possibly make a mock-up of a beech style to experiment with.

On a 76 the tang sight uses the smaller screw hole you show plus the larger screw that holds the stock.

uberti 73s do not come drilled for a tang sight and have to be drilled and tapped to use and original style tang sight. I suppose Uberti didn't feel the need but original Winchester 73 rifles came drilled and tapped for the tang sights, or at least every one I ever owned was.
