Okay, if youall are gonna hang me over this I have one last request. Use a new rope. ;D ;D

I just got off the phone with Kid Terico and he must be doing pretty good because he wanted me to post a couple of pictures of some items I just shipped out to him.

The first one is a Southern mountain style horn.
The second one is a ball pouch, actually the one on the left.

So , let the hanging commence ,but he sounded so good on the phone I would have posted a sherman tank if he had asked.
Now someone whip the horse and lets get it over with.

  Thanks Everyone.
Marshall that banded style of horn is truly a southern thing. It is another piece of horn heated and then cooled after it is put in place so it will shrink.

I think I have posted the knife before but I just finished the sheath for my buddie at work so now he can carry the knife!  It is a fairly large blade so the sheath he wanted had to be rugged enough for whatever he plans to use the knife for.  I ended up drilling the stiching holes with a fine bit on my Dremel.  I normally just use my awl but the leather plus the welt was too thick for me to use the awl.  I don't make enough sheaths to ever justify a machine(besides the CFO/Wife says I have enough toys).  Now it is time to get some new leather cuz that sheath used up my last cow. :)

nice picture frame.

Chan Geer actually has patterns out for making picture frames.
pattern packs can be found here:
http://www.hidestoart.com/hides_to_art_web_014.htm

his wife was telling me that they need to design a better leg for the picture frame cause it wanted to lean too much the wrong way. Chan Geer used i think 10 oz leather for the leg and gouged a fold line in it to be able to lean the right way.
now its just leaning too much.

let us know how well the leg holds up on your picture frame.

I haven't made a picture frame, but it would seem to me, the best way to make the leg sturdy would be to simply insert some thin but  stiff plastic/metal/ or hard card board and cover with leather like 3/4 or 4/5 ounce, that would take care of the leaning and should keep the frame standing up straight, IMHO.

Welcome to our forum Ragged Earl  ;D

For your first project of sewing, I think you did fine, the next one you do with bullet loops, you might want to sew/or over lap the loop when sewing it to the belt or backing, this will give strength to the loop and keep the loop from tearing away from the belt/ or backing in this case, check our " FAQ/HOW TO " thread on bullet loops, there is a lot of valuable information there.

Either way, you did a fine job, and you can be proud of what you have done.

                                              Regards

BhB, far be it from me to criticize, I think it’s a fine looking project.  One thing I notice is that the stitching seems to stick out a bit, which might cause unnecessary wear. In Chuck Burrows fine DVD, he talks about laying a stitch groove, then after sewing smacking down the stitching lightly with a mallet to push it into the groove.

On the other hand maybe the leather was not heavy enough to do that. Once again I think it looks good.
Title: Re: Pards!!! Display your FINISHED!!! Small Leather Projects here.
Post by: Ned Buckshot on October 07, 2010, 09:36:04 AM
I always cut a stitching groove and then lightly tap the stitching down with a "shoemakers" hammer. It's got rounded iface to keep from marking up the leather.

Your off the a great start!

Ned

Earl, your loading block is a fine one. Having the piece of antler on it is a good idea for pushing the last round into your rifle or maybe poking empties out of an R&D cylinder. Welcome to the forum.

Howdy Boothill,
The Book Cover and Picture Frame are beautiful! Excellent job of carving and finishing!

Howdy Earl,
Welcome to the Forum. Great job on your Loading Strip! As Marshall Will said, adding the piece of Antler was a real good idea. The neat thing about making you own leather is when someone asks where you bought it from, you can say "I made it myself". We look forward to seeing your future projects.

Many thanks to you Gents for sharing your work with us.

No, dont have a strap, but I put metal between the leather so it dont bends.. A strap would work to.. Tanx for the tip.

while toolling this i decided to not make the basketweave border even to the edge of the wallet. i just drew lines on the leather then carved it. looks better to me without being even to edge of wallet

Thanks for the positive comments guys, but I posted that slide in the wrong spot; I moved it over to the Show Ye Stuff thread to go with the holsters & belt that I made it for.

BhB, Tandy makes a kit, which is just vey small screws and some washers to attach any screw back conchos to snaps or most anything else. I don't generally use the washers, so it's just a matter of finding some small screws.

Hey knucklehead, dang nice looking wallet.  I really like the basket weave done like that.  It adds a lot of interest instead of the standard square block on most wallets.

Down the road from me there is a Keystone Ranch - must be a popular name. ;)

Been watching this thread for about a year now admiring the great work and encouragement offered by everyone.  I did some reading, bought a few tools, some leather, Chuck Burrows DVD's and got my feet wet.  The black color came from a Vinegaroon receipe I picked up here.  I really like that stuff.

I shoot Frontiersman class and wanted some gun leather that reflected the old cap & ball guns.  Got the first holster finished and the second is nearly tooled.  The belt will be two inches wide with a Civil War officers belt buckle.  Thanks to everyone who has posted regarding working with leather.  Here are a couple of pictures.

Lucky R.K. Welcome to posting. The first completed holster and the one in process are really great.

As you have already noticed from watching the thread for a year, the folks here are great, inspirational and extremely helpful.

You are sure ahead of me.  I am just finishing up my fifth holster and still have not gotten to a point of full tooling.  You tooling really makes me want to practice more and probably get some new specs so I can see the lines.

Okay, I gotta show off ...

I kept looking at boots that I could use both for SASS and reenacting.

The Fort Frontier Boots looked the cheapest and most comfortable boots I could find .... but there was this problem with the keyhole ... in 1850 California, they just didn't exist on the boots made out West ...

About the time I was considering boots I was also looking at the buckleless spur straps that were around ... metal was scarce in California, so they were often used.

So I made a set that matched my SASS pistol rig ... and they covered the keyhole, making them look like a pair of much more expensive (and much less comfortable) boot ...

Thanks Wolf Tracker, my friend got his new sheath this morning ... He looked at it, turned it over and repeated the process about three times and then looked at me and said:  That is beautiful, a lot better than I figured.  ;D  Of course I had to say:  oh, you thought I would do a crappy job?

The sheath is dyed.  it is about a 50/50 mix of Eco-flo Briar Brown and dark Cocoa Brown about 1oz total and then mixed with a good amount of EVOO.  Followed with 2 coats of EVOO and 1 coat of Satin Sheen.

Thanks COACHE: "The sheath is dyed.  it is about a 50/50 mix of Eco-flo Briar Brown and dark Cocoa Brown about 1oz total and then mixed with a good amount of EVOO.  Followed with 2 coats of EVOO and 1 coat of Satin Sheen."

Marshall Will thank you for the kind words.  I really like the color it turned out also ... My friend was very happy with it and really liked the color also.

I made my grandson a holster and belt for his birthday earlier this year, so this week I finished up this purse for my granddaughter who is turning 5 tomorrow. It's from a Tandy kit called a Miley Purse. I bought the kit last year and now they no longer carrry it, which is too bad because it's the perfect size for a child.

I used Tandy's Eco-Flo Hi Lite Color Stain in Briar Brown. If I remember correctly the design is one I got a hold of during a Chan Geer class he was holding in Portland.

It's a lot of fun to be able to make things for your family & friends with your own hands; they appreciate it and you get a great deal of satisfaction from your labors.

yall doing some great leatherworking.

i finally got my vinegar black dye mix to work. here is my first project with the vinegar black dye.
its a windshield bag for my buddies harley. this is also the first time i put studs/spots on leather. i used the 2 prong style with tandy tools to install. seamed to work ok for me.

another project almost finished. used antique for color.
this will be a small notebook just big enough to be usefull and small enough to fit in a purse.
i haven't done any toolling in a while so i thought it was time to get back to doing some flowers due to attending chan geer's class in september. the basketweave side is barry king's new basketweave stamp. its real easy and fast to use.

i did use skidmore's leather cream for sealer on this one.
i just got lining glued in last night. tonight i am going to start lacing it.

Not even sure what it's called but we use it to transport our cartridges to the loadingtable (beats carrying plastic boxes back and forth)  ;D

On the left a sheath I made awhile ago (with a small bowie-like knife I made from an antique breadknife of my grandmother).

Everything was handstitched and coloured using strong dark-roast cowboycoffee; too bad it looks black on the picture; in reallity it's ... well... dark-roast coffee brown.  ;)

I made this phone holster because I was tired of carrying the thing in my pocket. Too many butt calls and too hard to access while seated. I used Velcro as a closure so not to damage the phone with a metal snap. I made sure the case did not contact any of the phone buttons. Thanks for looking.   JW

......and here are some spurs

Several years I try to find good reproductions of old west spurs to wear on the trails.... not original spurs. The only trash I found was that chinese/ taiwan junk stuff. So one day I burned a fire and put some metal into the fire and start to make my first pair of spurs.... After testing out some things I try to rebuilt spurs out of my collection. During the time I did 27 differt pair of reproduction spurs 99% matching to my original stuff. Here are some of them.

So long

I collect old leather tools since 17 years also to make the period correct reproductions. Otherwise it is not possible to do that.

Any chance you can take a pic of the collars unfolded? I am interested in making myself a few of those, and would like to see the general build of them.

You should make a pattern pack of some of this stuff. Very different, and beautiful too.

Hey Folks

Today I have a post a pic of a pair of Cuffs I have made.... and the originals from my collection.
On the original Cuffs you can see a machine embossed tooling, made by Herman H. Heiser in 1915 - 1920. It was one complete stamp pressed into the leather. I does not have this original embossing tool and try to tool it by hand. It was very difficult because I want it look like machine embossed.

Have a great day

Hey GCR
On some of his hats he use a Hermann Heiser hatband, floral tooled, but not sure if it is a acorn and leaves tooling??
On some other he use a stetson made hatband, simple leather strap with rolled string slopped through.
I have seen one simple band, not sure if it is a leather band....
try to finde some more informations about the floral toold Heiser band in some of the old cataloges I have ... hang on, will get back.

So long

I just made my first sheath!

First here are the knifes ....the shorter one was by Dave Cole and matched a sheath he made that matches my modified Will Ghormley/Johnny Ringo rig. The knife is wonderful but it is to short to even cut a steak with .... so I bought this blade from Crazy Crow, had Big T make some scales for it, and made this leather sheath for reenactment ...

Congrats on your first sheath, WW. The stitching looks nice and even. Those are nice knives. The Crazy Crow knife looks good, as does the Cole one.

Marshall Will,

I think of you often ... every time I see that assembled wagon in my garage .... *S*

Yet another project on the back burner ...

But the Possibles Bag was a kit (called the Bridger Bag Kit at http://www.octobercountry.com/products/OC-Bridger-Bag-Kit.html ... and came precut with thread, needles and everything ... and cheaper than buying the bulk leather at Tandy!

I got them on the phone and ordered some extra leather and made a patch knife sheath on the aft side and a tool pocket for nipple prick and nipple wrenches ... I also took some Tandy Buckles, removed the tongues in a vise and used the square of the buckles to attach the shoulder strap to the back ... and by using different colors of leather and less-than-perfect stitching (Hey- it was my first kit!), I hoped to make a Bag that looks like it was repaired and strengthened with whatever leather was available, and stitched by the campfire and moonlight on those nights coming across the prairies ....

Title: Re: Pards!!! Display your FINISHED!!! Small Leather Projects here.
Post by: WaddWatsonEllis on February 25, 2012, 12:33:27 PM
Thanks Marshall Will,

By using the Tandy Buckles, I was able to buy roller buckles so that the bottom of the straps (that connect to the Bag) are on rollers ... and tend to take any movement on the roller-to-buckle joint rather than catch a leather ....

But if I was gonna do it again, I would buy a bigger bag in a kit ....the bag makes a good place to put non historically correct things (like DateRunners and cell phones in).

This is a progress report on a project I am doing for me.  It is a netbook case.  Finally have the carving, stamping and staining done.  Now it is construction time and install a handle.  Here are a couple of pics.

Finally finished the Netbook carrier I was working on.  Attached some pics.  This is lined with pigskin for nprotection and the leather is 13oz vegtan. I used a thick leather so I could get a real depth to the carving.  Had a lot of fun designing, and making this.

Hey!

This was my first satisfactory gun-related project. My other work is archery leather. The whole reason I got started with leatherwork was because of the great work a of guy on a lever gun forum. It's funny-  it's like I'm walking backwards into CAS. First, I'm getting my the leather together, then the gear and regalia...( luckily, my wife is absolutely willing to sew for me), the guns will be coming last...

Anyway, there are so many tons of great examples and fantastic support on these forums, I had to join.

Just a little starter project. I did a fair amount of leather work in the 70s and am getting back into it to make my kit for cowboy shooting. Have my holsters and belts cut out and getting started on them as well as cuffs, badge holder and such. Anywho, here's my take on the lever wrap. Just a bit of leather in a reddish brown finish and some semi-fancy lacing. I soaked the leather in some Hoppe's #9 hoping to prevent any future rust under it.

Everytime I dye a black Holster or Belt I have to again thank Wolftracker for that wondeful jug of Vinegaroon he gave me.

Howdy Will & TW,

Many thanks for the kind words and the excellent Forum you Gents run.

Without the the Leather Shop Forum I probably would have never found out about Vinegaroon, Walnut dye and the many other things that help me in making Holsters and other Leather items. In fact it was the Leather Shop that gave me the idea to take a crack at Leather Working back in early 2006.

Here is one I made for my Smith & Wesson J-frame. Again with Wolf Tracker's Vinegaroon. I tried to give it a bit of a Western look.

I started leather work a long time ago, but haven't done it for a while.  I have all of my fathers tools.  He started leather as a way to wind down when he got back from the Pacific during WWII.  He was in the Navy.
I had a home made knife my father had and always wanted to make a sheath for but unfortunately never did.   So I decided to make one and use it for cowboy!  I also made a bullet/shell belt pouch big enough to hold my empty .45's and 12g shells after each stage.

I made the plans for them myself and carved a simple floral design in it.   Came out ok I think.    ;D

Hello all!

So I decided to try my hand at building a set of holsters for my 1860 cap and balls.  I've never made holsters before so I wanted a simple design but had to carve something.  I made a floral design similar to the ones I carved in the knife sheath and bullet pouch I posted about a few up from this one.   :D    These are unlined with a right hand cross draw.

A friend of mine recently built a Bowie out of a really big industrial file.   Turns out scabbards for such aren't easily found.  So he asked me to knock him one out.   Good thing he really doesn't expect to carry the thing.  The "flattened" teeth are still almost fully capable.

But that toothpick does look awesome.

The layout is a copy of one shown in a picture from a museum.   Saddle stitched and no decoration but with modern metal rivets.    The plain leather sets you up for the surprise you get when you pull out the knife.   The antler handle is from a deer he took.   He's got a trophy trophy there with that blade and that handle.

Lots of beautiful leather on this thread.

Here's my first try at posting a photo on this board. Hope it works.

This is a gun belt and holster I made about 20 years ago. (pictured with my new vaquero) It is styled after a fast draw rig rather than the authentic western leather style of the 1880s.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Here are a couple more. A couple of winters ago my daughter (18 at the time) and I decided to each build one of the rigs in the movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I built, as close as I could copy, Clint Eastwood's rig with the same flesh side out, stitch pattern, buckle and so forth. My daughter did Lee Van Cleef's rig with the same stitch pattern dimensions and extreme forward rake of the holster. I photographed them with similar revolvers as those used in the movie.

You say this thread is for us to show "Small Leather Projects" ?????

OK.  Small it is.

My friend has some knives that have gorgeous antler grips.  They range from an awesome (size and beauty) Bowie to this patch knife.   The blades range from the Bowie that came from a really big shop file to the patch knife with it's blacksmith hammered Damascus.    They are so interesting themselves that we decided the scabbards should be plain and simple...  which was good since trying to match their level of interest would be nigh unto impossible.

my friends axe had a bad cover on it. so i decided to make a proper axe sheath.
the axe is a Mohawk Belt Axe, 2-1/4" blade from track of the wolf.

the button on the sheath is deer antler. the string is kangeroo lace. another friend has some pipe beads to finish the lace. this will give it a mountain man look and keep it from pulling out of the sheath.

Here are a few of my holsters...

The double loop for the Remmie is a borrowed from the Tandy Leather Cheyenne kit holster.  I extended the length for the 8" bbl, and added a liner since it was too large for the thin revolver.

The black holster with the strap is borrowed from a civil war era pattern that I got from another site.  I cut off the full flap since it made the draw cumbersome, and I added a 3/4" hold-down strap.

The black holsters with the bling are from Mr. Ghromley's Flames of Hell pattern.  I ommitted the decorative stitching pattern, added some simple border tooling, nickel spots and a concho.  They fit my NMV Rugers well.  A matching belt is in the works.

The holsters on the complete rig are from Mr. Ghomley's El Dorado pattern.  The belt is a take off from his Johnny Ringo pattern.  This rig has suited my needs in matches.  The other items have not yet been used in a match...but there is a match locally this weekend....

Stay safe mi amigos....Good Troy

This one is from Halloween.  Daughter decided she wanted to go as a cowboy at the last minute, so I drew and made her this gunbelt and holster out of scrap in about 30 minutes after school before she went out.  Kids around here, you can't buy guns, you can literally buy torture chambers, but guns, no.  I hope to find a cap gun to fit, but that's a peacemaker mold so I may have to make a new holster when I get another 20 minutes.

She had a proper outfit with boots, hat, chaps, and a vest, though she made the last two out of brown paper, and it rained.  So this picture was taken at some other time.

Post by: Massive on March 24, 2015, 12:25:54 PM
Time wise it was a bit of an eye opener.  The leather was about 6 ounce some thing from a scrap bag.  I cut out from a standard pattern piece, but since it was so light, I bent it around the mold and did a trim with leather scissors.  I also cut out a tab for the back to hang it, I think, or maybe there was a fold over piece.  Once I had the shape, I marked several points and ran the decorative stitching more or less freehand on the machine, then sewed the belt loop, then sewed the side seam.  The belt actually took longer because I had to mark, with a ruler and cut it out, then run the strap cutter.  The piece was too short so I had to joint it neatly with a patch, and punch holes and slots.

The interesting part is this is about the effort that probably would have gone into s similar holster from the period, if it was just a utility pouch.  Obviously the best work was pretty special.  But it is instructive to just do a flat out piece and not laminate, or glue welts, or stain, or stamp, or make sure the holes were punched centered to the thou, etc...

the axe is a Mohawk Belt Axe, 2-1/4" blade from track of the wolf.

the button on the sheath is deer antler. the string is kangeroo lace. another friend has some pipe beads to finish the lace. this will give it a mountain man look and keep it from pulling out of the sheath.
How do you un-button it?  I see no 'button hole'?

The button is fixed to the flap. In the photo, it's not fastened. To fasten it, wrap the thong around the button once or twice. To un-fasten, just unwrap it.

I really like that hatchet cover, it is both clean and dirty at the same time. Clean, straight weave, and rough, dirty, grain around the border. Did you use a background tool, or something else?

Here is something a little different. It is a stool we use when playing cowboy. This one is for my pal Three Cut.

I'm not a leather worker but I don't let lack of skill and talent keep me from trying.  Here is a leather wrap I made to cover the ugly forend on an early Winchester 1887.  It turned out homely but is functional.

That'll work good. Those '87's can get warm out there on the top. Thanks for sharing.
