Anyone intersted in a M1868 .50-70 Springfield
« on: February 08, 2012, 09:03:13 PM »
I really don't need an extra.  So feeling out who might want one.  Very good shooter.  Would like the $800ppd to you that I basically have in it.  If any GAF member is interested, let me know and I will try and take some pictures if the weather will ever allow it.

Without having seen it, that sounds like a pretty good deal.  I highly recommend the '68.  I shot one at last year's DOM Muster, and they are fun!

If you still have it in July bring it with you to the DoM Muster and we'll try to find a home for it then.  ::) As a matter of fact I'd suggest that anyone having anything to sell or trade bring it with you to the muster.

Well as it is pre-1898 its probably safe.  Buy yes, states all have their own issues.

If I still have it I will bring it, but I;d like to move it before then.  The bore is shootable, when I got it the thing looked rusted out, we ran a wire brush through it and it looked good, fired several rounds that were rather accurate, hoppes boresnaked it and realized it was quite nice bore and rifling.  At some point someone has used cosmoline on.in it and that accounted for what look like rust, just dried cosmo (which stains your hands like nothing else during cleaning)...ugh

Will try and get some pictures of it this week or weekend and post it since there is some interest.  I may also be parting with an unconverted M1888 Commission Rifle from Styer.

Would love it but low funds, how many loaves of homemade bread would it take? ;D

Is that a typo?  I think a 1945 Chevy would be a pretty rare bird...probably more rare than the rifle in question. I didn't think they started making very many for the civilian market before '46 or so.

I wondered that too, 42's are rare and when the produced again they were 46's.

Its a 1.5 ton flatbed truck.  They did not build a lot, but you could get one if you could prove need. Used the same build codes 1942-45, basicly this is a 1942 built in 45.  Its indeed a war built truck, no chrome, all the trim is painted, with several leather grommets where peacetime vehicles would have rubber.   Got it to haul our 1939 John Deere B to antique tractor pulls.  ;D

FT, if that rifle is still around in July, we may have to talk!   :)

OK, that makes sense.  You gonna rebuilt the babbit beater or find a 235 to overhaul?

FINALLY!  A clear day (it feels like monsoon season here in San Antonio).

Here are the pics.  It does need a cleaning and if I was going to keep it I would steam the dents out of the stock and linseed oil it.  The bore is very good and shootable, but also needs a cleaning.  I have shot it with MilSpec service loads and it did wonderful! After running a wirebrush and boresnake thought it, my gunsmith (one of the best) and a long time .50-70 collector both gave it a seal of approval (not easy from these guys).
