A new project, the Indy gun
« on: September 28, 2018, 09:49:53 PM »
Well, I have been itching to build one of these for years. When I first saw it in Raiders of the Lost Ark, I loved the barrel band look. I finally found a 1937 Brazilian that has been modified so I am good to go. A barrel band for a Mauser rifle will fit and one arrived today. The top picture is what it will look like when done and the bottom one is the donor gun, the one with the adjustable sights.

I like it. I do an Indiana impression every so often, Indie’s bag is actually a gas mask bag. Had a stetson fedora long before he got his.. Picked up a real bullwhip too. A very hard trick to master. For my movie gun build I started on Deckerd’s blaster some years ago, need to get back on it. Good luck on yours.

I love this project! Makes me want to do one of my own! What do you think the end cost will be when all said and done?

Well, I have $400 in the gun, $10 in the barrel band. Waiting for my smith to get the new barrel crowning tool for .45. Once he has it, the band goes on and we fit the sight. Going to take it from 5 1/2" to about 4, 4 1/2 or 5. I don't know for sure yet, going to take it down 1/2" at a time to see what looks best.

Major, I like the steampunk idea. That particular rig would make it hard to push the cylinder open, maybe just use the upper cylinder?

It's a Brazilian from the 1937 contract. However, it has had S&W adjustable sights milled in, so no collector's value. It's a very good shooter, so I'm looking forward to this.

Pitspitr sighs relieved  :) Oh Good! I've searched quite a while for a K-38 or a Model 14 that I could afford and finally won one on GunBroker last weekend. I should get to pick it up by the end of next week

It's a K-38 Heavy Target Masterpiece. I haven't got my hands on it yet, so there's a lot I still don't know about it, but from the photo's it has aftermarket target grips and a target trigger shoe. I'm not an expert, but it looks to have the target hammer and by some of it's other characteristics I'd say it was probably made between 1950 and 1954. Until I see the serial I won't know for sure. Looks like it has some holster wear around the muzzle, but since I wanted it for a shooter, I really don't care about that.

Me Too! And Smith and Wesson's in general.
I have 2 1899's, a 1902, a nickel M&P and a pair of model 10's with consecutive serial numbers. Then I also have a Canadian P-1914 and a M&P40

Sorry for Hijacking...
My new K-38 was built in 1954. Still haven't gotten my hands on it but at least I know the serial # now.

Crud, I'm happy to see more S&Ws! Do you have the right style grips for it or are you going to leave the customs on it?

The dealer is out of town so I can't actually pick it up until sometime next week, but they did let me look at (drool over) it.

The grips and trigger shoe feel really good, which surprises me as I have really short thick fingers so reaching the trigger can sometimes be an issue with some guns. It has the best trigger I've ever felt and that is saying something with as good as the trigger on my nickel M&P is. It is in really nice condition too!

I'll probably leave it as is for now. I probably won't buy factory grips for it until after I get it lettered so I know which grips came with it.

Deacon, you'll appreciate this:

Saturday I was at a pawn shop in Lincoln and they had a factory S&W presentation case sitting on the counter complete with a factory cleaning rod, screwdriver and documents for a target M-1955. It was about 1/3 of what I'm seeing them selling for online so it came home with me. Hopefully the insert for the N frame won't be that much too big for my K-38. If it is I do have a Canadian P-14 that would go in it.

Anybody need the factory Documentation for a target model 1955?

Oh, and again; Sorry for Hijacking...
