Here's my favorite song of the south

You Ain't Just Whistling Dixie (1979)
The pines trees grow so tall in the bright sunshine
A young boy steals his daddy's fishing line
Alligator lays on the banks of the river bed
And if you did not know any better you'd swear he's dead

Now these are a few things I'm in love with
A small part of the reasons I go back

To Carolina, Mississippi, Florida gorgeous Georgia
Now if you think I'm happy down there youre on the right track

And you ain't just whistling Dixie you ain't just slapping your knee
I'm a grandson of the Southland and heir to the confederacy
You ain't just whistling Dixie cause the cattle calls calling me home
So put me down there where I want to be, plant my feet with Robert E. Lee
Bury my bones under a cypress tree and never let me roam

The cotton balls gleam and the cows give cream for the baby's sake
And pa comes in full of gin and he's mean as a rattlesnake
And the well runs dry and we cry and cuss the garden hose
And mama draws a bucket full of creek water just to wash our cloths

Now these are a few things I'm in love with
A small part of the reasons I go back
To Carolina, Mississippi, Florida gorgeous Georgia
Now if you think I'm happy down there youre on the right track

And you ain't just whistling Dixie you ain't just slapping your knee
I'm a grandson of the Southland boys and heir to the confederacy
You ain't just whistling Dixie cause the cattle calls calling me home
So put me down there where I want to be, plant my feet with Robert E. Lee
Bury my bones under a cypress tree and never let me roam

Tried to find a rip roarin' song 'bout tha midwest er great plains....

no luck!  ;)

 ::)

On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!
Grand old badger state!
We, thy loyal sons and daughters,
Hail thee good and great.
On, Wisconsin! On, Wisconsin!
Champion of the right,
"Forward!", our motto -
God will give thee might!

FYI, "On, Wisconsin!" was the cry that Arthur MacArthur, Jr. used in the Battle of Chattanooga at Missionary Ridge, in the Civil War. He seized the regimental colors, and rallied his regiment with "On, Wisconsin!", for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Brand new state!
Brand new state, gonna treat you great!
Gonna give you barley, carrots and pertaters,
Pasture fer the cattle,
Spinach and termayters!
Flowers on the prarie where the June bugs zoom,
Plen'y of air and plen'y of room,
Plen'y of room to swing a rope!
Plen'y of heart and plen'y of hope.
Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain
And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain.
Oklahoma,
Ev'ry night my honey lamb and I
Sit alone and talk and watch a hawk
Makin' lazy circles in the sky.
We know we belong to the land
And the land we belong to is grand!
And when we say
Yeeow! Ayipioeeay!
We're only sayin'
You're doin' fine,
Oklahoma!
Oklahoma O.K.

CARRY ME BACK TO OLD VIRGINIA

by James Bland

Carry me back to old Virginia,
There's where the cotton and the corn and taters grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where this old darkey's heart am long'd to go,
There's where I labored so hard for old massa,
Day after day in the field of yellow corn,
No place on earth do I love more sincerely
Than old Virginia, the state where I was born.

CHORUS: Carry me back to old Virginia,
There's where the cotton and the corn and taters grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where this old darkey's heart am long'd to go.

Carry me back to old Virginia,
There let me live 'till I wither and decay,
Long by the old Dismal Swamp have I wandered,
There's where this old darkey's life will pass away.
Massa and missis have long gone before me,
Soon we will meet on that bright and golden shore,
There we'll be happy and free from all sorrow,
There's where we'll meet and we'll never part no more.

Oh the hinges are of leather, the windows have no glass,
And the north wall lets the howlin' blizzard in.
But I'm happy as a clam, here on the land of Uncle Sam,
In my little Ol' Sod Shanty on the plain.

Here's one I like to listen to out in the shop

She was a level-headed dancer
on the road to alcohol
I was just a soldier
on my way to Montreal
Well, she pressed her chest against me
About the time the jukebox broke
She give me a peck on the back of the neck
And these are the words she spoke

Blow Up Your TV,
throw away your paper
Go to the country,
build you a home
Plant a little garden,
eat a lot of peaches
Try and find Jesus on your own
I sat there at the table and I acted real naive
Cause I knew that topless lady,
she had something up her sleeve
She danced around the room awhile
and she did the hoochy cooch
Yea sing a song all night long tellin' me what to do

Blow Up Your TV,
throw away your paper
Go to the country,
build you a home
Plant a little garden,
eat a lot of peaches
Try and find Jesus on your own

But I was young and hungry
and about to leave that place
Just as I was going she looked me in the face I said "You must know the answer"
She said "No, but I'll give it a try"
And to this day we've been livin' our way
Here is the reason why

We blew up the TV,
threw away the paper
Went to the country,
built us a home
Had a lotta children,
fed 'em on peaches
They all found Jesus on their own
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

"I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved."

another of the John Prine CD

When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn.

Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.

Repeat Chorus:

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.

Repeat Chorus:

When I die let my ashes float down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester dam
I'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'
Just five miles away from wherever I am.
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

"I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved."

just found out yesterday that Linda goes to Mars
Every time I sit and look at pictures of used cars
She'll turn on her radio and sit down in her chair
And look at me across the room, as if I wasn't there

Oh My stars! My Linda's gone to Mars
Well I wish she wouldn't leave me here alone
Oh My stars! My Linda's gone to Mars
Well, I wonder if she'd bring me something home.

Something, somewhere, somehow took my Linda by the hand
And secretly decoded our sacred wedding band
For when the moon shines down up on our happy, humble home
Her inner space gets tortured by some outer space unknown.

Oh My stars! My Linda's gone to Mars
Well I wish she wouldn't leave me here alone
Oh My stars! My Linda's gone to Mars
Well, I wonder if she'd bring me something home.

Now I ain't seen no saucers 'cept the ones upon the shelf
And if I ever seen one I'd keep it to myself
For if there's life out there somewhere beyond this life on earth
Then Linda must have gone out there and got her money's worth.

Oh My stars! My Linda's gone to Mars
Well I wish she wouldn't leave me here alone
Oh My stars! My Linda's gone to Mars
Well, I wonder if she'd bring me something home.

Yeah, I wonder if she'd bring me something home.

from the Ipod now

There is a young cowboy he lives on the range
His horse and his cattle are his only companions
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons
Waiting for summer, his pastures to change

And as the moon rises he sits by his fire
Thinking about women and glasses of beer
And closing his eyes as the doggies retire
He sings out a song which is soft but its clear
As if maybe someone could hear

(chorus)
Goodnight you moonlight ladies
Rockabye sweet baby james
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
Wont you let me go down in my dreams
And rockabye sweet baby james

Now the first of december was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from stockbridge to boston
Lord, the berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

Theres a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
A song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
But singing works just fine for me

- chorus -

Now that's Cowboy ;)

On this day in 1982 Marty Robbins heeded the masters call.  Fond memories of the man myself, not only his music, but remember the days when I watched NASCAR and you could count on two things, if Richard Petty hadn't blown up an egine or wrecked he was out near the front and if he made it that day Marty was runnin' way back just a havin' fun.

When I was but a young man I was wild and full of fire
A youth within my teens, but full of challenge and desire
I ran away from home and left my mother and my dad
I know it grieved them so to think their only boy was bad

I fell in with an outlaw band, their names were known quite well
How many times we robbed and plundered, I could never tell
This kind of sinful living leads only to a fall
I learned that much and more the night I heard my Master call

One night we rustled cattle, a thousand head or so
And started them out on the trail that leads to Mexico
But a norther started blowing and lightning flashed about
I thought someone was calling me, I thought I heard a shout

Then at that moment lightning struck not twenty yards from me
And left there was a giant cross where once there was a tree
And this time I knew I heard a voice, a voice so sweet and strange
A voice that came from everywhere, a voice that called my name

So frightened I was thinking of sinful deeds I'd done
I failed to see the thousand head of cattle start to run
The cattle they stampeded, were running all around
My pony ran but stumbled and it threw me to the ground

I felt the end was near, that death would be the price
When a mighty bolt of lightning showed the face of Jesus Christ
And I cried oh Lord forgive me, don't let it happen now
I want to live for you alone, Oh God these words I vow

My wicked past unfolded, I thought of wasted years
When another bolt of lightning killed a hundred head of steers
And the others rushed on by me and I was left to live
The Master had a reason, life is his to take or give

A miracle performed that night, I wasn't meant to die
The dead ones formed a barricade least six or seven high
And right behind it there was I, afraid but safe and sound
I cried and begged for mercy kneeling there upon the ground

A pardon I was granted, my sinful soul set free
No more to fear the angry waves upon life's stormy sea
Forgiven by the love of God, a love that will remain
I gave my life and soul the night the Saviour called my name

Back in the day, Richard always worried about a red ‘n white Mercury showin’ up.

My favorite tale of Marty ‘n racin’ happened in the mid seventies at Taladega. He was way down. Stopped ‘n the hood went up. He told the crew to take the plate off. Went back out ‘n waved at the leaders while he passed ‘em in that godawful lookin’ purple ‘n yellow Dodge if his.

NASCAR caught on quick ‘n parked ‘im. He didn’t care. The laughs he had were worth the expense.

Sad. Today, with inspectors all over everything, he wouldn’t have left the pits like that.

Hard to believe he's been gone 25 years.

Has it been that long?
I will dig out my copy of "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" by Marty and play it today.

He had one top 5 ‘n 6 top 10s in 35 races in cup. No wins. Never finished on the lead lap. In today’s world that really wouldn’t be all that shabby.

Don’t hold me to it, it’s been a long time. What I think he did was lease cars from Buddy Arrington. For Marty it was a hobby.

I only saw him run a couple times. Both at Charlotte I think. I remember well when his name was called durin’ the intros the places almost came apart with fans cheerin’.

They have one of Marty's cars in the museum at Talladega Speedway. That purple and yellow coloe scheme was definitely unique.

When he was racin' we only got 3-4 races here on TV a year.  Not as well known, but James Garner used to "hobby" race the Baja 500.
