Title: Attention All Den patrons
Post by: Cuts Crooked on May 01, 2008, 07:19:55 PM
Howdy Gang!

Things have been going really well here in the Den for quite a while now and I've really enjoyed seeing the exchange of info concerning BP, the fun stuff that goes on in some of the threads, and the general feeling of good fellowship y'all create here! My thanx to each and every one of you for making this place so great to visit.

<sigh> Now I gotta "Dutch Uncle" a bit. There have been a couple of recent posts passing along info about smokeless use in both cartridge and C&B gunz. I know, as most of you do also, that they were strictly inquiries or intended to be informative in nature. Unfortunately not everyone who comes here is a higly qualified reloader/ballistician, and it is possible, however remotely, that some poor soul could make a serious mistake based on partial reading of these posts. So...with some reluctance....I'm going to lock them and will remove any future references to smokeless loads as I find them. I hate to do this, but I can't in good concience let these posts continue to be made. This place is after all about black powder and smokeless data really doesn't belong here in the first place. I know there are other boards out there that cater to smokeless shooters and that's where these kinds of posts belong. PLEASE respect my desire to keep this place about the Darkside and don't post about smokeless while yer here.

I will be adding a "No Smokeless discussion" rule to the forum rules thread.

Yer Pard,

Cuts Crooked

I'm one o' those newbies ya mentioned, Cuts, but I take the advice of all my new Darksider pards serious as all git out! I think sometimes folks post a question or a topic jes' to git a rise outta people. Other times they's really curious. Either or, I'm glad yer puttin' a stop to it in this case!

Breathe deep the gathering gloom....an' don't go smokeless!

yer pard,
Jethro Black Jack Harris

No arguement from this Frontier Cartridge shooter.

I like the smoke heavy, fire blazing from the barrels, and the sweet acrid smell of brimstone to fill the air!!

Don't worry, pard.

It'll never catch on.  ;)

Good action, Cuts!  I can just see it now:  (AS posted by about 3 fellows who hate NCOWS - which is predominately BP shooters and who will remain nameless)

Look - those yaa-hoos are saying it's ok to use smokeless in BP guns and they say all smokeless powder has a lower pressure curve than BP!

Thanks Cuts,

Best keep the Darksider's Den clean of the smokeyless stuff.  Yup, there's plenty of place for the "other" powder elsewhere.  Yer ridin' a good horse and takin' the high trail.  I'll ride with ya.

Smokeless gun powder?!?  ???

What'll they think of next? Smokeless CE-Gars, probably!  ;D

Seem to be a waste of time, to me. What's wrong with a little smoke, anyway?

Cuts........

What about duplex loads since those have been discussed here too? You know, smokeless used to give the Holy Black a boost!!

Those should not be allowed here as well.

Hope to see you at a shoot...soon.

I too agree. Some experts can mix powders. But I do not see the sense of it.

Thanks C.C.,

That name rings a bell. Is he a bandit or a Yankee? ;D

Thanks for the tip on a good bullet mold source.

Cheers,

I have to say, after firing "holy" black powder, even the substitutes don't match up.  I gotta have that BOOM!  I own a 75 caliber blunderbuss and 50 caliber Kentucky flintlock for a pirate group I'm a part of, built them myself from Dixie's website and hand carved the hilts.  Gotta love how the rest of the group makes me stand in the center of the group, to make sure I don't catch any by-stander's clothes on fire with the flame spouting out of the 'buss!

I can't wait to get into this here with the cowboy.  Thanks for having an awesome forum and making this so accessible to noobs that are willing to search.  I'd also like to thank Captain George Baylor SASS Life# 24287 for showing me the way via a magazine article.  I'm already used to making my own balls, and having someone help me out with the bp... so frontiersman with a c&b .451 makes perfect sense.  That and it saved me enough money for a Spencer Carbine as my first rifle.

As for people that mix powdders or use smokless in BP guns, I am wondering just what theyare smoking.

Your decision makes perfect sense. The last thing we need are accidents to newcomers caused by misunderstood information. There are plenty of places to get smokeless info. Keep this pure Blackpowder.

I hate to be a dissenter, but duplexing has been around for a long time. It was quite common with the old time Schuetzen riflemen.
Mixing powders with progressive burning rates was experimented with in the Civil War. It worked, but was too labour intensive to be worthwhile.
I've even read of using a finer grade of BP under the main charge to facilitate burning. Who could bother?

I've played with duplexing in my Sharps 50-70's and it makes for a very clean burning load. It's labour intensive and a PITA to do properly, so I rarely bother, but it works.

Now I'll duck the road apples comin' at me ......
