Division of Indiana Expansion Era Muster Report 9/30/2023

There were 8 shooters who showed up for the 2023 Division of Indiana’s last  Muster. It was held on September 30th in Indiana and it was an Expansion Era Muster. The theme for the Muster was the “Battle of Ciudad Juárez “ which was in 1911. Each of the 3 skirmish runs immolated a part of that battle.

The first skirmish run was set on the part of the battle where the city’s defenders ran out of water on May 8th with the Madero, Villa, and Orozco faction capturing the well which caused the surrender of Navarro and his troops . You started off behind a crate and began addressing the rifle targets. There were two rifle targets that were used at each position as you moved forward along with two new ones hidden on the right and left at varying ranges. You progressed through each of the three positions engaging 4 targets at each position which gave you a total of 12 rifle targets to engage. You staged your rifle on the well and then drew your pistol to engage the 2 pistol targets which were on each side of a large downed tree.

The second skirmish run was set on the part of the battle where Navarro’s troops had a defensive position with concentric rings of trenches and fortifications. It is interesting that one of the participants in the battle was the future star of Hollywood Westerns, Tom Mix, which is reported in some circles.  You started on the rim of the creek with your rifle and engaged 3 rifle targets hidden in the woods up the hill. You staged your rifle on a table and then proceeded into the creek and began engaging the 12 pistol targets hidden both in the creek and surrounding areas. At the end of the skirmish run you loaded and shot 5 pistol rounds at a B-27 paper target for score which was still n the clock for the skirmish run.

The third skirmish run was set on the part of the battle where Madero’s men attacked Navarro’s troops who were manning their defensive positions with well-placed machine guns. You started off with your pistol in hand and addressed 3 pistol targets. You then holstered your pistol and proceeded to our version of a gatling gun and had to cycle the crank of the gatling gun two full revolutions before it supposedly jammed. At this point you picked up your rifle and began to address the 12 rifle targets which were hidden in the woods as you proceeded toward the command post which held the final 2 targets.

The last part of the Muster was a precision Rifle match. We do not have the distance to shoot out to 300 yards so we improvised one that would fit out range. We placed an 18X20 steel target  at 100 yards and another one at 150 yards. We allowed you to take 10 rounds to the firing line . You had to hit the 100 yard target 3 times off-hand before moving on to the 150 yard target which you could shoot kneeling or sitting. All this was with a 5 minute time limit for the 6 hits and no more than 10 rounds.

Everyone said they enjoyed the skirmish runs and also the variation of the precision rifle. This was our last Muster for the Division of  Indiana for 2023. We will be posting the dates for out Muster in 2024 on CAS City.  I can tell you that we will have our first Muster which will be a “Department of the Atlantic” Muster in April; Division of Indiana Musters in June and August; and our last Muster in 2024 will include Expansion Era with date yet to be determined. (Probably in October)
