Almost all the boxes of the 1870's period until the 1880's were two piece affairs that "met" in the middle and I cannot find anyone making those type boxes.
You're right , Fox Creek.
I guess if one were set on making truly authentic boxes of the 1870s, if you could find boxes such as the ones that H H gave a link to,
without the handholds,.....then you could slit the outer cover in half horizontally and glue the lower part of the cover to the bottom/outside of the inner box,....set the top /outer cover on, then glue your side labels on if ya had any and just razor the side labels along the break to open it ,..just as on the originals. But of course the UMC boxes had round corners, ....but Winchester boxes were square cornered.
Huuummm,....what one could do with their "spare time"..LOL
Hoof Heart....I got the box with the dividers from Dixie last year, but when I check their site now, it looks like they discontinued them. All they offer now seems to be the plain blank .45 Colt box.
http://www.dixiegunworks.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=display+box&x=6&y=6...the one at the top. Last year they were selling that box for $2.00 and the one with the inserts was $3.50. I think Cheyene Boxes is supplying them.....with their "interpretation" of an original label.
E-mail or PM me with your address and I'll send you one of those "inserted" boxes for your heeled bullets. That's what I ,too, have found them to be good for.
I'll take some measurements of these dixie boxes and get back to you here. I understand your needs for boxes that don't have to be period correct,...just for ease of use,...that's cool, I can relate. There's a part of me that way, too,...then there's the other part that takes to the challenge of making a few boxes that are as close to the originals as possible.
