Cartridge boxes
« on: January 03, 2008, 09:25:19 AM »
OK

It seems as though a few of us have an interest in making cartridge boxes. :P
I have spent some time looking for chipboard or past board boxes and I have accumulated a large library of labels.

Oldelm, Barbarosa, Deadeye and others...............
Here is a link to a box maker:
http://www.papermart.com/templates/04-0-10.htm#GO_05010
I'm sure we can find more  ;)

If we can figure out EXACT sizes for the calibers we want and group together this could become affordable.
Who wants in?

Hey Hoofie...that's a great idea!  ;D

Count me in.

I've bought the blank boxes from Dixie and printed out my own labels,  but they're expensive, I think now the Dixie .45 Colt ,blank box, is $3.50

I do like, though, the insert in one of their kinds which holds the individual shells....like this one

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa276/foxlbee/Image08a-1.jpg

...but the box is a little bigger on that one, not the original size,  because of the insert.

One thing that would be nice is to find good examples of the side & end labels which are large enough to get a good print-out.  I find that if the image insn't large enough, that you can't get a good clear printout. I have a copy place print out my labels using a Laser Printer. It gives a nice exact copy, and the ink is more permanent than on my home ink-jet printer.

Almost all the boxes of the 1870's period until the 1880's were two piece affairs that "met" in the middle and I cannot find anyone making those type boxes.  :'(

Oldelm

Where did the box with the dividers come from? That would be the cats meow for my heel base stuff as the BP lubes need to be insulated from one another!

Can you measure some of your Dixie boxes and let me know inside, outside, heigth etc. along with what calibers fit and how they are arranged in the box? This would give us a starting place, then we could order a hundred (appears to be a minimum order) and divy them up.

On the label thing..........
I have some ends and sides in my pic collection (not all transferred to photobucket yet) I photoshop them and change or rearrange them to work. I know all of the files aren't large, and all of the pics aren't as "new" would look. But we are just playing here.... :P and getting close is all that concerns me. I even reduce the top label and use it on the end, so that when stacked I can see what is what. By the way you can get more permanent toner in some of the new photo type printers ;D

You're right , Fox Creek.

I guess if one were set on making truly authentic boxes of the 1870s, if you could find boxes such as the ones that H H gave a link to,  without the handholds,.....then you could slit the outer cover in half horizontally and glue the lower part of the cover to the bottom/outside of the inner box,....set the top /outer cover on, then glue your side labels on if ya had any and just razor the side labels along the break to open it ,..just as on the originals. But of course the UMC boxes had round corners, ....but Winchester boxes were square cornered.

Huuummm,....what one could do with their "spare time"..LOL  ::)

Hoof Heart....I got the box with the dividers from Dixie last year, but when I check their site now, it looks like they discontinued them. All they offer now seems to be the plain blank .45 Colt box.

http://www.dixiegunworks.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=display+box&x=6&y=6

...the one at the top. Last year they were selling that box for $2.00 and the one with the inserts was $3.50. I think Cheyene Boxes is supplying them.....with their "interpretation" of an original label.

E-mail or PM me with your address and I'll send you one of those "inserted" boxes for your heeled bullets. That's what I ,too, have found them to be good for.

I'll take some measurements of these dixie boxes and get back to you here. I understand your needs for boxes that don't have to be period correct,...just for ease of use,...that's cool, I can relate. There's a part of me that way, too,...then there's the other part that takes to the challenge of making a few boxes that are as close to the originals as possible.  ;)

With the cartridge box measurements,  the measurements for the inside of the inner box are what's important.

I'll give you the inside dimensions of the inner boxes on these two....

http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa276/foxlbee/Image05b.jpg

On left, w/inserts, for .44 or.45 ...Inner box, inside dimensions are 5-3/16" long, 2-5/8" wide, 1-5/8" high.

Box on right  ....Inner box, inside dimensions are 4-11/16" long, 2-5/16" wide, 1-5/8" high

Don't know ifn you gents have seen any of my "custom" ammo boxes. I did a bunch and got side tracked

Some of them 2 piece boxes would be real cool. I have some in 38/357 with the inserts in them, but my customs are just plain white ones from Midway.
Ifn ya want to see more of my boxes look at my web page: http://sdough.smugmug.com

Thanks Curly

I pondered the ones from Midway but I noticed they are even bigger than the Winchester Boxes. I like the Ultramax box cause they are a bit smaller and have the plastic tray.

However, I did go ahead and order 10 Cheyenne Boxes from Midway for the 44 Remington Magnum. They are smaller than the Ultramax box but bigger than the Cheyenne 44 WCF box and they also have the insert dividers. I will place my custom labels on them if they work out!
