Title: 2011 Department of Missouri HQ Muster
Post by: Pitspitr on November 18, 2010, 12:48:03 PM
I will be hosting the 2011 Department of Missouri Muster July 29, 30th & 31th, in my pasture. This will be open to anyone in the GAF. You need not be headquartered in the Department of the Missouri. By using Google Earth and going to  41°40'16.24"N Latitude and  99°19'42.54"W Longitude you can see the Dept. Muster site. Registration forms will be available on the dispatches page of the Grand Army's Web site at a later date. Particpation will be limited to 25 shooters

This muster will be a primative camping event. The planned activities include: a 3 stage GAF steel target main match, a GAF Expansion Era Match, a 400 yd paper target long range match. While 3 stages for the main match doesn't sound like much these two stages will be of the skirmish format and will feature about 30 knock down targets per stage. Round counts will be dependent on the number of times the shooter needs to shoot at each target to get it to fall. 90 to 100 rounds at least would be a good plan.

I will have a tent city and have tentage for 4 individuals if you don't have your own.  Participants can also use modern tents. We'll just set them up a little way of to the side so that photos won't show them.  Also we should be easily able to get photos without anything modern in them. We should have plenty of time to sit around the campfire and visit.

The muster itself will be low budget. The meals will be cooked by Delmonico and participants will pay him not me. I don't intend to issue medals to the winners, but entry fees will only be around $40. The only reason I ntend to charge an entry fee at all is to use that money to purchase steel that I will use to make steel targets for GAF to use. These targets will be scaled versions of the 1880's army silhouette targets.

Unless something falls through between now and then, there will be artillery there. I have a guy lined up to come who has a parrott, a howitzer and several mortars. The increase in registration fee will be to help with the powder for the artillery.

Upgrades to Camp Pitspitr have already begun. I understand Capt. Neiderlander has completed 2 wash racks, one for the men and one for their dishes. A permanent outhouse is next on the list and a sun shade will follow.

Outstanding!

I need to replace my lodge poles. When I (eventually) get them I'll be able to house everyone who doesn't have a proper tent under canvas.

I have an outhouse up at Bow View Farm that I could donate.  Getting it to you might be interesting.

Built it a couple years ago for having shoots there.  I think it's been used maybe 3 times.  Should still have that "New outhouse" smell ;).  I dought I'll hve any more use for it where it is. I never even got it painted.

I dropped off steel for twelve more knock-down targets at the metal shop yesterday.  We should have plenty of knock-downs for the muster!

UPDATES 4-1-11

Congratulations to River City John. The first official registration has arrived!

I  heard from Capt. Ned Neiderlander this afternoon. We will have more than 60 of the Blunt silhouette targets by muster time in July.

Yesterday I put a down payment on a Cimarron 1911 for use in the EEM.

Gentlemen,
As of now we have twenty-one standing targets, seven kneeling targets, and one prone.  I just picked up twenty-nine kneeling targets we need to build bases for, I picked up steel for nine more standing targets today (as well as fourteen bases), and we should have about twenty more prone targets in progress.  Oh, and we should have about twenty pistol targets, but those are still in development.  I can't promise I will have bases for all of them by the DoM Muster, but we should have a fairly target-rich environment!  Hope to see you there!

Col. Pitspitr,
I have the honor to report I will also be bringing a couple of prizes to be awarded to lucky winners at the MO Dept. HQ Muster, one of which is an authentic repro 1865 St. Louis Arsenal stamped wood ammo box for Spencer Sharps .52 carbine cartridges. I have taken the liberty of altering it to a hinged lid so that it can be used as a general purpose shooting accessory.
Your Obedient Servant,
RCJ

Outstanding Capt.!
Thanks you!

For those of you who were here last year. I think this years DoM Muster will be nicely improved. For those who weren't here this is one you probably won't want to miss. We may even have running water on sight this year if everything works out.

Things are beginning to come together for this year's Muster.  Last year we had five reactive targets.  As of today we are up to twenty-five standing targets, thirteen kneeling targets, and one prone, with more targets being built every week.  We also have crew-served enemy weapons (see the Facebook page).  Should be fun!

John, the round count is bring lots and lots. This match will utilize the new skirmish format entirely and the number of rounds you use will be dependant on how many times you miss. Ned Neiderlander may be able to give you a closer estimate. It seems to me that last year when we used the skirmish format on the EEM match it took on average about 2-3 shots per target.

how many targets? More than 50?

You all shoot much better than I, so now I'm anxious whether I'll be able to carry enough ammunition. Will there be a pack mule available for use?

I'm assuming about thirty to forty total (rifle and pistol) targets per stage.  I realized a while ago that a lot of the ammunition carrying systems from our era only allowed for fifty rounds on your body.  I think we'll have a system for ammunition resupply during a stage, with probably a small time penalty if you need to use it.  We've been putting a lot of thought into this, but the skirmish format is still an evolving concept.

I'm not really sure, Dm, but last year most of the photo's seem to be from Friday and Saturday. Friday being the side matches.

I seem to remember some discusion last year about an alternative to must hit targets, with something like if it was engaged and didn't go down after like the 4th or 5th shot then the shooter could bayonet a representative of said enemy before being overrun and continue on to the next target so as to not use up an excess amount of ammo.
Title: Re: 2011 Department of Missouri HQ Muster
Post by: Niederlander on June 20, 2011, 08:38:04 PM
It just so happens I'm in the process of making bayonet dummies right now!  I believe what we came up with is three hits and it's dead.  That shouldn't be much of a problem if we set the targets correctly.  They're built to be adjustable as to how much force it takes to knock them down.

Will be haeding out on Thur. the 28th just not sure which route would be best. I've crossed the " wide missouri" at Blair the last two years, but  not sure I can get there from here this year. Any updates would be apprieciated. Look forward to seeing everyone at Camp Pitspitr and Fort Scotsman. Al

Al You're at Tama, right? I know it sounds crazy to go so far south, but it'd be quicker to take I-80 west to Grand Island then take Highway 2 to Ansley then 183 north. I wouldn't have believed it myself until I had to go that way. If I-80 gets closed the nation is in serious hurt.

Looks like a good place to me.

In fact if anyone has ANYTHING they are looking to sell or trade bring it along you might find a buyer. I'm planning on bringing a couple of Krag bayonets.

Also if anybody just has "show and tell" items bring them. They'll be good campfire story fodder. (You might want to leave the ducks at home though. ;)  ;D )

Only if someone else cleans it! I don't like duck well enough to pick the darned things  :P Sauerkraut is best with dumplings!!!

I'll pick the ducks and wouldn't make the pork or the duck with out the tater dumplings.  Here's a 20" oven full of them and pork:

I still haven't sent it my registration yet, but planning to....Just trying to get all the logistics thought out. Wife might consider camping, but not if it's TOO hot(baby more used to A/C). Are there perhaps any creeks or other places to cool off? If the camping isn't happening, what about the nearby motels? I see online one in Taylor, but no website, and the hunting lodge, which is out of my price range.

Also, Thanks Pitspitr for the Appleseed brochure you included with the registration form. I never would have guessed they would have shoots within 30 minutes of me! I took over the baby for a day, and took my wife to learn, was her first experience with shooting. Unfortunately, I didn't have a suitable rifle, and while the loaner they had did have an adjustable stock, she told me after that she was having a lot of problems "finding" the view in the scope. I'll have to work on a .22 that fits her for next time. Who knows, maybe next It will be a cowboy or even military rifle!

I'm going to add this to this thread,

As an added thought, if someone or a couple of you have any of those drinking water jugs and have room toss them in.  I'll have mine, and will keep it full of iced tea like last year, if we had an extra one we could put ice and water in it and put it down at the fort and it could be hauled along when you go down to the EE match.  A second extra one could be kept in camp with just water and ice.

Also if anyone has a real large extra ice chest they could bring along I could get and we could keep more ice around when I run into town for an ice run.  I have a couple extra, but I tend to not have room for extra stuff and mine are not real big.

I am getting so stoked about the DOM muster.
So did you come up with a minimum round count yet?  for the different events?
Main match
Expansion
long range
any others

Somthing that was done at the national Muster last year was that ALL repeaters started with only 5 rounds in the magazine on most stages, even if you could hold more (Scouts) you styill had to load on the clock.  It really changed the game and put the scout shooters on a similar level with the milspec repeater shooters.  Somthing to consider when writing stages.

As of yesterday when I got home we have more officially registered shooters than we had last year. Still haven't heard from two of last year's shooters and have had inquireies from several who weren't here last year. By match time I expect that we will have had some growth from last year's numbers, but won't be completely full yet.

Pony Express, the nearest motels are at Taylor. But it's looking like some road construstion between here and there will be in full swing by match time. Next best would probably be Broken Bow or Ord which are both about 25-30 miles. Burwell would be a good option too if it weren't for the road costrusction between Sargent and Taylor. The Shepard's Inn B&B west of Ord would be a really nice option, but I'm not sure what the cost would be.

It's looking like the water project won't be done in time for this year's match but at least I should have plenty of wood cut this year. The permenant outhouse is in place and I'd say that preparations are proceding as expected or maybe a little ahead of schedule.

Bow View; Bring all you can pack. If you have extra ammunition that you want to shoot we'll find plenty of ways to give you an opportunity to shoot it! ;)
I think Lt. Col. Neiderlander is suggesting something like 40 rounds total per stage of the EEM and the main match. The EEM will be a single stage and the Main match will be 3 stages. So I'm thinking something like 100 rounds rifle and 30 rounds pistol for the main match and 30 rounds rifle and 10 pistol for the EEM. Again this is just an estimate needed number will be dependant on the number of times you have to fire at a target in order to make it fall.  Figure 15 rounds per entry for the long range rifle and about that for the long range pistol. Hopefully Lt. Col. Neiderlander will see this post and jump in with a reply if my numbers are too far off.

I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm always guilty of estimating heavy on ammunition, but I'd recommend 150 rifle rounds for the Main Match and 100 rifle rounds for the Expansion Era Match.  Fifty rounds of pistol ammunition for each should be more than enough.  Less than those numbers would probably get you by, but why run short?!  "Targets, targets everywhere, and not a round to shoot!"

As of yesterday registration for the Dept. Muster is half full. This is already half again more than we had last year. If you're still planning on coming get your registrations in. And BTW if you just want to come and watch we'd love to have you. There is no registration to watch  ;D but if spectators are planning to eat with us they need to get their meal fees to Delmonico ASAP.

I have confirmed that the cannons and mortars will be here.

Update on motels: I found out this week (Sorry Brian) that the motels in Burwell at least are full due to the Burwell Rodeo. This probably means Taylor's are too and possibly Ords. Broken Bow may be your best bet. If you are planning on staying in a motel you better call...soon!

Next year we'll schedule this shoot earlier in the year (maybe June or even May).

Just a thought for somthing around the fort to wind down from the EEM.

Or maybe knife throwin' or horseshoes, or is just listening to the ducks enough ;D?

Motel Update:
The motels in Burwell and Taylor are full due to the match being the same weekend as the Burwell Rodeo, but Broken Bow is about the same distance as Burwell and Ord and the Best Value Inn and Suites in Broken Bow DOES have some rooms left. If you are planning on attending and stay in a motel you had beter call Broken Bow...SOON.

Does that mean that if you loose at the cards you shoot the guy across from you with the pocket pistol? :o

If I could get a target set up we could throw my 'hawk... Horse shoes....Hmmm  ::) I'll have to see if I can find my set.

If we had enough register we could play vintage baseball, ::)

We'll see what happens.

As of right now, weatherchannel.com is calling for highs in the mid-80s & lows in the mid-60s at Sargent - sounds downright comfortable compared to what it's been around my end of the state lately.

Wasn't planning on packing a pocket pistol & derringer, thought it was a rifle & revolver thing.  Guess I'd better bring some pocket guns, a buffalo rifle, what else?  shotgun?

In the Colonel's absence, I don't know if we'll have time for pocket pistols and such, but go ahead and bring them along.  If nothing else, you can show them off to the other folks there!

Stu I'm not planning on bringing my `rock thrower up there but the other guns you mentioned are all welcome. As Col. Neiderlander said we may not have time to shoot them all, but if you want to burn some powder through them I'll try to find a target or two for you.

As Stu said the forcasted highs are 86 for all three days. The only thing is that the humidity has been really high this year.

Col Sir,
How snake friendly is the camp? I might try to talk Freeda into coming with Pooper Trooper, but as he is smaller than most snakes, its a maybe.
Also, what time will the shooting commence on Sat?

The grass is cut pretty short. Never see anything but the occasional bull or garter snake.

I just posted pictures of the Traveling Trophies for the Department of the Missouri Muster on our Facebook page.  (My pictures are always too big to post here.)

I pruned this thread down a bit to make it easier for folks to find the important information.

Last minute details

Most folks will want to take Interstate 80 to Grand Island. At GI get off at exit 312 and take highway 281 North to Highway 2. Follow highway 2 northwest to Ansley. At Ansley you will see a convenience store on the south side of the road. Just past the convenience store turn right onto highway 183. You will immediately go over an overpass. Immediately past the overpass you will turn left to stay on highway 183. Take highway 183 north to the first intersection north of the town of Sargent. At that intersection turn right onto road 816 (there is no road sign) and go 1.5 miles east. My mail box sits on top of a barrel. Turn left onto my driveway (Pit Spit Lane) Follow Pit Spit lane all the way to the north. When you get into my yard, go north of the house and turn left and go through the gate. Immediately after the gate bear to the right and go north to the top of the irrigation canal. Once on top the irrigation canal go east to the bridge and cross it. Once across the bridge bear to the right and follow the mowed trail to the top of the hill. From the top of the hill you will be able to see Camp Pitspitr. By using Google Earth and going to  41°40'16.24"N Latitude and  99°19'42.54"W Longitude you can see the Dept. Muster site.

I have tentage for 4 individuals if you don't have your own.  Participants can also use modern tents. We'll just set them up a little way of to the side so that photos won't show them.  Also we should be easily able to get photos without anything modern in them. We should have plenty of time to sit around the campfire and visit.

Can I bring a Pop-up?
What kind of ground clearance does it have? Remember, the camp site is about 3/4 of a mile out into a pasture over a pasture trail. Pickups and SUVs aren't a problem, but I'm not sure about cars. If you drive a car you could park it in my yard and we could carry your gear up in my pickup or four wheeler.

Now, I'm going to assume that since this is NOT on Gum'mint property, that spiritous likkers to warm man 'n' beast are welcome?*
 ;D
*Or at least will be duly ignored by the CO? As long as a tin cup full finds it's way into his tent?
Well.....
Even though I'm probably the only Irish Catholic alive who doesn't drink, I see no reason judiciously applied spirits need be prohibitied. :D

Are the long range targets paper or steel? I.E, is it lead bullet only, or is jacketed ok?

Yes the long range rifle match is paper, so yes jacketed are ok for that event. JUST MAKE CERTAIN NOT TO LOAD JACKETED FOR THE STEEL PARTS OF THE MUSTER! ;)

If you're coming to the Department of the Missouri Muster, you may want mark your cases to make sorting easier.  I'm marking mine with a green "X" (with a green Sharpie) across the base.

Yes, I marked MY brass with a green "X".  I marked YOUR brass with a green "D", and Bob's with a green "C".  Hopefully, by next year I'll have enough of my own!

I will mark mine with a small indentation on the face of the primer. Any brass where the primer has an indentation are most likely mine.

 :)

That's good to know. I'll have to get a green sharpie to continue your convention. On my pistol brass I may use the same mark as River City John. I have a lot of it and if John's and mine get mixed up it shouldn't be too big a deal.

Well, the wife heard about the rodeo, and wants to go  see it, so I guess we'll be going out one evening to that. Do we have an evening activity on Saturday?(A banquet on campaign, sort of) If so, I guess we'll go out to Burwell on Friday.
Mine was rather perturbed that I would plan this shoot the same weekend as the rodeo. I told her I planned this a year ago and didn't know when the rodeo was. She told me that was no excuse and that she expected me to attend with her as it is a tradition. I suggested maybe we could go on thursday. She told me I WOULD attend the Saturday show with her and the kids as it is the tradition, so I guess I will be AWOL Saturday evening as well.

A mix of nitric and sulpheric acid would do. :o

Looks like I will not be getting in until late Friday. And will have to head out Sunday earlier in order to be back for Granddaughter's B'day party.

Stu Kettle, I likely will not bring a tent, but just make do with a bedroll.

I got a call this morning. There was a death in our artillery crew's family, so the artillery is doubtfull for this weekend. IF they make it it will probably be Saturday.

Was hoping for a scout to have snuck out of camp to report on the campaign.... :-\

Looks like Freeda, Pooper Trooper, and I will head up in the morning, and stay for a little bit. Not sure how long that is though. Pooper Trooper should be Commander Pooper Trooper, he runs everything.
