I want to attend, but will have to see how things shake out. In November I am scheduled to work days. So to attend the match, I will have to take 2 weeks vacation. The vacation isn't the issue, I have 300 hours available. Basically I have to get one of my counterparts to swap shifts for 2 weeks. so I can take the vacation.  My supervisor isn't the most responsive, I can apply for the vacation now, but it won't be until September or October until it is approved.

I have been planning to to attend since the last Grand Muster - and drive out so I could transport the necessary firearms (and do some essential sightseeing on the way).  Flying is too much hassle anymore, with or without firearms.

However, it looks like I'll FINALLY be retiring about 6 weeks later and need to keep what little leave time I have so I can sell it back.  But if that changes I'll let you know.

Howdy Pards,

We are putting together the match info and are thinking about having a side match using Cap & Ball Revolvers.  Would you like a 3 - Stage Side Match using the C&B where you load two pistols and cap the second one on the clock or include the C&B Class in the Long Range Pistol competition.  Your input is appreciated.

My capping sux and is very slow but It still sounds like fun.  Just not the capping on the clock part.  How about jsut starting with both loaded and cappede?  Could throw in a shot or two with a muzzle loading rifle with it.  Oh and how about a kife throw or jab.  And.............

From the Grand Army of the Frontier Muster Guide:

"GAF PISTOL GUIDELINES:"...
..."Cap-and-ball revolver shooters may use more than one pre-loaded but uncapped revolver or cylinder for reloads during the stage, but these revolvers or cylinders must be capped on the clock."

You could use that argument.

I don't have the final say. I'd address the question to the General and Col. Drydock.

Side matchs, other than the EEM, are at the match directors discretion.  And local conditions/regulations must always be accomdated where possible.

I just tought that if your doing a Cap-n-Ball only match, having two all ready to go wouuld expidite things a bit.  It would be better for any green solders unfaliliar with all the intricacies of the cap-n-ball revolver (me) if the loading, including the capping could be done before the pressure of the "clock" starts.

Welllll........
I had figured that the football season would be over by then and that even though it's the opening weekend of deer season I would burn a bunch of comp hours and just go. Then after watching the season opener the other night the boys could be playing in in Memorial Stadium in November and I won't miss the chance to keep stats in the big stadium. I'm just going to have to see how the fall plays out.

Is there a maximum number of particitpants? I may have to be a last minuter  :-\

T-MINUS 63 DAYS UNTIL THE GRAND MUSTER

Hello to all from Texas Sarge:

Lets all try to use this top post for all Grand Muster information.

Rattlesnake Jack glad to hear from you and looking forward to seeing you in November.
Pitspitr we can have as many shooters as we want, and we want a lot!  We are trying to put together the numbers for the awards so I can have enough medals for all the winners, as well as trying to get the numbers for the meals.  Kitchen Kate is going to cook up a Texas Storm.  Don't forget meals start at breakfast on Nov the 12th thru lunch on Nov 14th, and I hear from
Kitchen Kate that on Saturday night for the Grand Ball meal there will be a smoked turkey meal with all the trimings.  After all it is November.

I have finished writing the main match stages and the round count is: Rifle-93+ Revolver-87+  the plus in the count is for the
mandatory knock downs, so bring some extra ammo for both weapons.
Capt Mack is just about finished with the EEM and Long Range so a round count will be coming soon for that as well.
Hope everyone will get there Applications in soon, it will be big help for puting together a great Grand Muster in Texas.

Texas Sarge

Charles,
I shot my New Service .45 double action at the DOM Muster, one handed of course, like they were meant to be shot.  (The people at Colt must have been afraid someone was going to make one of their double actions go off accidentally, and designed accordingly!)  You'll like it!

Jack,
If your Webley's double action let-off is nicer than my old long action S & W it must be truly fabulous!  Bring it along to the Department of the Missouri Muster next year so I can see for myself!

Oh yes, I would like it very much!

I always looked at any gun range shooting as training-even if it is a "Match"-that's just a word. So, having always liked shooting with a "Train like you fight" mentality, well, a 100 yard double action revolver shot will usually take so much time on the trigger pull, most anybody would, in all actuality, just cock the thing.

Now, if shooting purely for a challenge and test of skill-then it seems like double action at 100 yards (one handed with a New Service!?!) is about as good of test as any-especially seeing how normal CAS and SASS targets are within spitting range-and with a single action? Now the GAF goes to 100 yards with all of our service pistols. Am I the only one that finds this to be incredibly profound?

I consider the GAF to be the finest shooting organization in the entire world. Now with the new rifle/pistol skirmisher course Ned Niederlander conceived and then tested at the Department of Missouri  muster and Capt Mack's 100 yard pistol (double action!) shooting-I find the GAF is evolving into something even better-It's hard to find the words to describe!

I only fear that I may have to miss the Grand Muster, just as I missed the Missouri muster. A very depressing thought.

As frustrating as it might be, there's always next year. To the best of my knowledge the only ones who have never missed a Grand Muster are Rattlesnake Jack, River City John and possibly Gripmaker. The rest of us get to as many as we can and miss as few as possible.

I have spent many, many hours this past year thinking about practicing.

Consequently, I now think I am so much faster, smoother and accurate than I was before I thought about practicing that there's no need to actually do the practice.

A large part of this game is mental. And there is no one more mental than I.

Bring it on!

I will try to get my application sent out soon. Won't be staying in the barracks, Will be on an  :accompanied tour" again, with wife and baby. Since I expect there won't be married quarters available, how close would it be to the nearest hotels? Wife is a bit apprehensive about trying to camp with the baby just yet. Of course, where we stay will make a difference in the ammount of extra meals we will need, for her.

Also, how long is the long range? Steel or paper targets? (Lead only, or jacketed?)

T-54 DAYS TILL THE 2010 GRAND MUSTER

Hello to all from Texas Sarge.

Sorry I havn"t answered the latest questions but I'll try now.  First a little info on what has happned to my family since Thursday 9-16-2010. My middle son Cole Clayton(Windbreak) who is 24years old was in a kaiacking accident on Thurs in one of the local rivers here in New Braunfels Tx and near drowned.  Cole is in ICU unit in the hospital and regained conciousness late Friday THANK GOD.
When awake he can respond to most questions by hand and head movement, kidneys arn't working yet but all in all he is doing soom much better.  It will be a long recovery road for all involved.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Pony Express--Lockhart is about 5 miles or so from the range, motel listing on GAF web site in the application part.  Long range up to 400 yds, lead only, steel targets.
Glad to hear the other applications will be coming soon, must return to the hospital now.

Sorry to hear about your son's accident, but glad to hear he is recovering now!

I was just checking the websites of some of the local motels, will have to call later.

As for the long range......Lead and 400 yards...Hmmm, sounds like a game better suited to trapdoors! Small bores might take a bit more experimenting, the Krag load I use would require a LOT of elevation on the rear sight to carry!

Exactly!
I might have to go with the 45/70 or the 50/70 Springfield  this time around. Got less than 2 months to practice-no pressure.

You ready to shoot that Colt's Bisley out to 100 yards Pony Express?!

What's the target? A 4x8 sheet of plywood for the bullseye? CAS targets at 10 yards are easy enough for me to miss with it!

Some months back I took to shooting my Colt's .45 New Service at 100 yards exclusively-but single action! Last time I fired double action at 100 yards was almost 40 years ago-and a 4x8 sheet of plywood would have been somewhat safe but I had fired a pistol very little at that time.  Still haven't got out to try the 100 yards double action-Where does Capt Mack come up with this crazy stuff?!

That's my class. Well, I guess I'll have to be satisfied with no higher than 2nd place.

You're much too kind. And anyways, I saw you guys whippin' those breechblocks fore 'n aft on those Springfield .45s-You all were pretty darn good!

Col. Pitsptr,  As I recall, I have as yet to miss a Grand Muster. As RCJ said, 2 in KS, 2 in IA and 2 in NE.  Anyone up for Staff Officer? Haven't done much revolver shooting except at Raton in June and durned little there. Mostly shot my 66 in 44-40 out to 600 yds. It even impressed brother Bob. But then, he didn't do too bad either once he got the hang of it.

How is the construction on the barracks coming?  Might have to bring a tent along as long as we don't have to reckon with any "critters". Too many run-ins with slithery and stinging things while living in Dimmit Cty.

Greetings to All

As you are aware, Texas Sarge has his hands full.

There was a question about camping.  Period camping is encouraged and is close to the Barracks and restrooms with hot and cold running water.

In the event of bad weather or heavy snowfall we can move to the Pavilion, which has restrooms and a shower.

The stages will be challenging but will be more fun than watching a monkey eating ice.

Please direct questions to either Capt. Mac or myself (Scooter). Looking forward to seeing everyone.

You might to bring a cot as a backup.  The Barracks should be ready however a further inspection will be made this weekend at our monthly shoot.  I will report at that time.

Maybe Capt Mac can post a picture of the Barracks.  Isn't it great when a plan comes together.

As long as there is a master list being kept by someone on site as the early donations arrive, adding on those that people bring with them won't be that difficult. I'll print enough generic 'Thank You' notices to cover what I feel will be enough for the job, and bring 'em along. I will just provide a pre-stamped envelop and rely on each recipient to address their own.  We can update the list as the troops arrive.
And I'll act as the Awards Master, too, unless you have someone in your unit who wants the honor.

Sound like it will work?

By the way, do we have a round count yet? Or have I overlooked it?

RCJ

"I have finished writing the main match stages and the round count is: Rifle-93+ Revolver-87+  the plus in the count is for the
mandatory knock downs, so bring some extra ammo for both weapons."

This answers my question, Texas Sarge, I reread the earlier posts.

I just can't function on one nights sleep in 4 days. Sometimes I wish I was a shark so I didn't need to sleep. :-\

Sorry to hear you may have to decline your attendance to the 2010 Muster.  Rest assured you will be there in spirit.

We have been working since last year's Muster and it appears everything is coming together.

There will be something for everyone,  ie
          Period camping
          The Barracks

In addition to camping and the Barracks, there will be vendors, artillery demonstration and/or training and delicous cuisine from our own Kitchen Kate.

   Plans
for a military band (La Banda) are on hold because of increased Homeland Security patrols along the border.  Seriously, we have enjoyed working on this project and hope everyone enjoys themselves.

Unfortunately, won't be any period camping for me, if I can convince the wife to bring the baby camping at all, we only have access to some modern stuff....maybe after I get my uniforms squared away, then a tent will be in the plans.

Scooter,  Never mind the status report. Just found out the registration form didn't get sent.  Will have it in the mail this week. I hate it when both my wife and I forget to write notes to remind each other that we need to remind each other about something. This isn't supposed to happen until you get ..... aw crap, now I forgot what I was going to say.  At least I remember how to get to Lockhart, ie I-35 south to San Marcos, then TX 80 east to TX 142 then on to Lockhart. Sure glad I kept that Texas road map when we moved to MO.

Bow View: Well, I won't worry about my tent getting lonely....I have three smaller ones that I used to travel on my motorcycle with.....but I borrowed this bigger one to try to "ease" the wife and baby into camping. She isn't impressed too much with the ones you have to crawl into.

RCJ: Thanks, but for the above stated "easing into it" reasons, maybe I better go with the bug resistant modern nylon contraption (with it's accompanying queen size air mattress) for now. But in the future, I hope to acquire a tent that will not get me banished to the back 40.

T-MINUS 29 DAYS TO THE 2010 GRAND MUSTER

Howdy To All

Glad to see the registrations are coming in, as well as others on there way.
The engagements are all written along with the schedule, also a little Texas history and all will be posted as soon as Capt Mack
can get it on this post.  I'm sure he will be able to do this as he was able to take me by the hand to now include my photo on
my posts.
Also a huge THANK YOU to all who have been praying for my son Cole and his recovery from his accident, which was 4 weeks ago today.  He is doing so much better walking, talking along with being his same old self when he isn't hurting from surgery or fighting something else and will soon be transfered to a Nuro Rehab Hospital in San Antonio maybe tomorrow.

See you in Texas if the Lord is Willing

Do we have any final info on availability of the barracks?  Last time I slept out in south Texas, I had to shake a vinigaroon (sp) out of my boots. Not a pleasant thought to have to do it again. However, I have heard that Caldwell County is more civilized than Dimmit County. Yeah, right!

Looking forward to the trip.

Capt. Little,

The Barracks will be ready but bring BUG spray.  The snakes will be in their holes so as not to bother anyone. The Fire Ants, but thats another story.  We have learned to get along with Them.     Anyone desiring to stay in the Barracks you might want to bring a cot.    We are attempting to install a shower and hope it will be ready.

Pony Express,  Just get a can of ant spray and spray a perimeter around your tent or get a bag of the newest Diazanon replacement and sprinkle it around the tent then soak with some water. Fire ants don't normally bother you unless you set-up on their home or a pathway.

Scooter,  Don't recall if the General is going to be at hand. Have you received a definitive statement?

I am curious ...... will competitors in the "Regular" category of the Expansion Era match  who choose to shoot a revolver (particularly without the aid of half-moon clips) be competing on the same footing as those shooting semi-auto pistols, or is it a separate sub-category?

Since a M'1911 is not really historically appropriate for my Canadian Mounted Infantry and/or South African Constabulary impressions, I have been considering use of a suitable revolver, with which half-moon clips would also be neither appropriate nor possible  .......

My alternative, I guess, would be to compete in the "Volunteer" category, although that requires me to use the Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle, rather than the Short Magazine Lee-Enfield I had hoped to use this year ....

Fraid theres no sub catagory Jack, as you say, they're all on the same footing.  But Jack, there's no  rifle magazine  limitations either.   I suspect  whatever  time  you  lose with  the  revolver, you can  make up for with the SMLE.   :D

:'( Well it's finally official. I won't be able to attend the 2010 Grand Muster.  :'(

Found out late Friday that next week I'll be taking my striker, J.Dawg to Minneapolis for heart surgery.

Now while that's not something a parent looks forward to doing, it isn't as bad as it sounds. This will be the second one he's had and it should be the last. When he was a 15 year old freshman in high school we found out that he has Wolfe-Parkinsons and White syndrome which is where the heart short-circuits causing it to beat too fast. He had surgery to kill the extra "spark plug wires" that caused the short circuit. During the surgery the doctors found out that his heart had not one, but 2 extra wires. The second one was too close to the "good wire" for them to attempt to kill it. This took place on the 18th of March that year and on April 2nd he won the first of his varsity track medals and on May 20th he competed in the state track meet the first time. He is now in his senior year of eligibility in the track program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.  Early this year (the first 2 practices) he had a couple of heart episodes. Doctors increased the dose of his medicine and he's been fine since, but they also felt it was time that with the improved technology and techniques he should have surgery to remove the second "bad spark plug wire". This is something we had always planned to do but didn't think it would be this soon. The up side is that after the surgery he shouldn't ever need the medication again...and since he's a full time student he's still covered by my insurance. The down side is that I can't very well take half a week off each of the next 2 weeks. If this were in the summer it wouldn't be a big deal but I can't take the time during the school year.

I'll be thinking of you guys.

I Second RCJ's sentiments, Jerry!

However, it occurs to me that it must be almost a given that a young fellow recovering from heart surgery  would need several days of R&R in a warm clime ...., say south central Texas .... and that his Father would be fully justified in accompanying him, of course .....

Pitspitr prayers up from southern va!

My workload and getting out of house in Manassas, Va (thank you HAP program and the ACOE!), has made traveling to multi-day matches pretty hard until the new year.

I am looking forward to finally shooting with ya'll in a GAF match one of these days.

My prayers are with you and your families both.

On another note,

If there is still room we may be bringing a new recruit along.  How is Barraks space looking?   he is just getting into the CAS thing and is interested in coming to the GAF muster.  A chance to start out a new recruit on the right track.

I am a new recruit and glad to be a part of the GAF.  I will be attending my first Grand Muster.  I have read CAPT Mack's Event Schedule, Engagement Orders for each stage and the accompanying Texas history.  I am impressed with all the work that has goine into planning what I am sure will be a great event.  I have two questions.

1.  Do we shoot in all three side matches?  In other words, are they scheduled at different times?  I assume it will be possible to shoot in only one or two according to one's schedule and desires.  Is that correct or are we supposed to shoot in all three?

2.  I will not be able to stay after shooting Friday afternoon because of obligations in town.  How is uniform judging handled?  Are there "inspection" times.  I do not anticipate being competitve, but I have thrown together field and garrison uniforms of sorts.  I will wear variations of the former while shooting Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the latter for dinner Satuday night.  Anything special I need to know about this part of the muster (uniforms)?

Look forward to meeting all of you at the muster.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

Judging from past musters, senior staff/selected personel will observe participants uniforms thruout the match, no specific inspection times.  Someone may pull you aside and ask questions about your outfit.  Such personell will compare notes, come to conclusions, presenting their findings to the match director  before the awards ceremony.

Long Juan

The shooting  starts on Friday morning with long range rifle on stage One and long range pistol on stage Two at the same time.  We should be finished by noon, lunch then shoot the EEM starting a 1pm and should be finished fairly early.  Capt Mack has not posted the course of fire for Fridays matches. You may shoot all, or part, or none if you can't.  The history and stage info posted is for the 10 stages of the Muster for Sat & Sun.
Hope to see you at the monthly shoot on Sat the 6th.

This Muster participant is now en route, with my faithful batman in tow ..... checking in from Couer D'Alene, Idaho.  We are taking the "scenic route" as it were  (very roundabout, in fact) with a view to confusing the enemy.  We are heading west, to travel down the Oregon and California coast, then will approach the site of the engagement from the west!

Planned inspection of Naval Vessal USS Lexington, along with other attractions more suited to the "better half". Then proceed to San Antonio, visit my sister, then approach the battle site from the south, while RSJ approches from the west. Hopefully the hostiles will be trapped between the various approaching forces, resulting in a deciscive victory!.

A small contingent form the eastern battalion of the Division of Nebraska , Dept of Missouri, will be departing in about 6 days time and preparations are still underway.  As direct rout as possible is planned from the north.  A sort of Frontal assault, as it were.  It sounds as if engagements with the enemy could happen in many different situations.  I'm trying to think of what armament to ready.

Main arms will be 73 winchester carbine in .45 colts cal. and Remington's new armies .44 cal, one converted to .45 colts cal.
I also have .38 cal 92 winchester and SA for secondary duty and the 92 may be my long range weapon of choice due to past reliability.
I believe Fri morning may see action from the cap-n-ball Remington's and (if I read it right ) a percussion rifle.
I should probably put the .32 H&R American in my pocket just in case. and maybe the .45-70 H&R handi Rifle In case there is a chance at a long shot with it.
Friday afternoon will see my Llama version of the famous new 1911 browning designed pistol in my holster.  My Friday afternoon long gun my be the 1917 version of the P-14 Enfield (if I can get enough ammo loaded) or the battle proven Rossi m92 .38cal mentioned earlier.  (the Rossi helped me stand proud at the end of Battle at the Dept of Missouri muster).

what kind of night time temps can we expect?  just how thick of a bedroll will we need?

Hope we have enough room for all the arms ammo clothing, and gear needed for this engagment.

Brvt. MaJ. Bow View Haymaker awaiting further orders.

Lets talk realistic ammo requierments, not just the actual number of targets of the NO-MISS round count.  There wer parts of the last GAF event I sas at that had a rather low hit persentage.  you basicly doubled the round count for some parts of it and you might have enough.  Just trying to determine if a couple of the rifles will even get to come along for the ride.  Or if they have to stay home for lackof provisions (ammo). This would make them sad and noone want thier guns to be sad.

Round Count for Grand Muster:

Main Match
93 + Rifle
87 + Revolver

Expeditionary Match
20 Rifle
25 Pistol
12 Shotgun

Side Matches
Long Range:
Rifle: Single Shot & Repeater: 20
Revolver: SA & DA Revolver: 15
Musket Rifle & Handgun: 5
Cap & Ball Revolver: 5
Rifle; Pistol Caliber: 10

When we incite revolutions, an ample supply of ammo usually accompanies the regiment.  So use your best judgement .            As for the weather, lows in the 40's, hi in the low 80's.    However it can change every min.    Forecast shows possible showers so bring your rain gear. Don't worry, if it does rain it will be over very quick.

My unit is making fine progress, making camp for the night in the Indian Nation, will be reaching Texas early tmorrow.

Sounds as if the attack is going as planned, with units converging from at least three directions. Hopefully will not have difficulty with the ammunition supply, sufficient quantities of ammunition for Colt's revolver, new-fangled Colt's automatic pistol, 1903, and shtgun. However, supplies of .30 army cartridges for the Krag rifle are in short supply, available stocks will only allow for about 20 extra, so hopefully my marksmanship will be good!

When do we have to be out of the Barracks? If possible, we were planning on sleeping Sunday night in the Barracks and then taking off early Monday morning.

Actually, a piece of electrical tape would have been just the ticket, as it turned out!  They determined that the dadblamed contraption has a tiny little air leak into the manifold - not enough to cause any difficulty for the computer to keep things regulated at the elevations "at home" i.e. about 2500 feet above sealevel, and higher.  However, fluctuating back and forth between sea level and much higher elevations, as one does driving down the west coast highway, gave it absolute conniptions! The computer log showed it going back and forth from running too rich to too lean.  The light came back on and stayed lit most of the next day or two, but has remained off since we moved inland .....

I am pleased to confirm that this contingent has arrived in the Republic of Texas, albeit at the extreme western end ....  We have bivouacked at El Paso.  After another "overnight" at or near San Antonio, followed by a reconnaissance of the immediate environs (including the fortifications of the Alamo, of course) we should arrive in Lockhart on Thursday afternoon, God willin' and the creeks don't rise.

It has just occurred to me that I may not have mentioned that my batman, Roger, will undoubtedly wish to attend  the Saturday banquent, as well as partaking of some of the other meals.  I trust that will not cause any logistical problems , so long as the necessary ration chits are acquired upon our arrival?

Packed and ready to weigh anchor at second bell of the morning watch. Fully awake around four bells of the same.

I was not able to petition the Naval Commander of the Department for permission to extend the wearing of summer white pantaloons and straws past the October cutoff per regulations, so I have drawn up conditional permission papers, signed by myself as the ranking Naval officer on board, to wear same.

Look for me about third bell of the second dog watch. Everything shipshape and fuses cut and ready for action.

Will be on detached duty with landing party of the Texas Navy, Department of the Missouri.

God Bless Texas!

Pancho, I guess we can use a federale that wandered north of the border. Why not, we always have a place for that AWOL Canadian, Rattlesnake Jack! But he must be cheating somehow, to manage to hit 9 out f 10 on that long range stage(out to 400 yards) with that target killing Snyder Enfield!

Well, I must admit overhearing someone saying, after they called "Hit" on the 400 yard target: '"Don't know if that was on the first or second skip ..."   ;D

We have struck camp and will be heading north momentarily.  Will endeavor to send in dispatches whilst en route, depending on availability of suitable couriers.

A suitable courier being available, I am able to report that this contingent has successfully journeyed as far as Quanah, Texas, some distance out from Palo Duro Canyon and Amarilllo, having passed through Austin, Waco (where we stopped for a very enjoyable visit to the Texas Rangers Museum), Fort Worth and Wichita Falls.  Will continue west out of the Texas panhandle and through New Mexico and Arizona Territories before turning north into Utah.

Had a very enjoyable time at the Muster, I must say!  Special thanks are certainly due to the organizers and hosts!

Have some soul searching to do regarding my previous comments about the Snider-Enfield being an arm of questionable accuracy, after getting 9 hits on the 10 targets ranging out to 400 yards on Stage One (shot last by my Squad) .... guess I must have actually been getting the hang of it by then!

Glad to hear that a grand time was had by all. Cactus Rope and I made it to my quarters last night about 11:00 PM after a stop in Austin and one at the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco.  Dealt with some foul weather while crossing Indian Territory but our conveyance brought us through in grand shape. Sitting here now wondering why I am still up so will close this report and burrow into the bunk.
God Bless Texas!!!!!

Your advice well given, Captain!  Reports of hostile action on the trail west to Albuquerque in New Mexico Territory (well .... boring scenery, anyway) induced us to divert to Santa Fe, where we overnighted.  Plan to tour the town a mite before continuing to Albuquerque and then west into Arizona Territory.  No waggon difficulties ....
