Title: What krag bullet mold are you folks using?
Post by: G.W. Strong on September 01, 2013, 01:38:05 PM
This weekend at the division of Illinois muster I shot my krag.  A few minutes in dusty Tagalong noticed we were struggling with our loads. He lent me five rounds. His 200+ grain bullets we're much longer than my 180 grain bullets from a lee mold. He buys his bullets so that is no help since I am a bullet caster. Does anyone have a mold that is long enough to run smoothly in the krag?

I may try seating mine longer but there is 1/4 inch difference between our bullets.

I would love some suggestions.

I use the Lee 200 grain .309-200-1R mold.  Run it thru a 311 sizer, using .303 gas checks, shoots and feeds great in all my Krags.

Lyman 311332, I bought it years ago for 30-06, and it's the only .30cal mold I own. 190 gr pointed bullet, it's long enough to work in a Krag. Once tried some 165 gr commercial cast 30-30 bullets in the Krag, didn't feed well at all.

I use the 311299, which I believe throws a bullet about 218 gr.  (I'll check for sure tomorrow.)  It was designed to replicate the Krag bullet way back when.  I have NEVER had a failure to feed, and it works great in the .30-06 as well.

Someday I'll have a 311299, and also a 314 299 for my various .31 cal rifles, too. But at the time what I thought I needed was a pointed bullet...

Disregard, did not read "Mold" in topic

At the suggestion of Cowtown Scout I use 210 grain Montana Bullet Works Linotype Gas Checks.  Have a new barrel so cannot tell difference between .309 or .310.  Push these to orginal 220 grainer velociites or what should be close based on load data (no chrony).  Given the size of targets any misses are my fault not that of the rifle or the load.

Have found at 50 yards using bear creek moly 170 grainers (30/30 bullet) loaded long with 10 grains AA2 rifle will stack 3 under a quarter

I use Lyman's 311284.   Drops them from my alloy at 210 grains.    I size them at 311 with rcbs green lube behind 24 grains of imr 4198.  I'm getting about 1600 to 1700 fps. I have a short barreled carbine with a barrel that looks like an obstacle course for tanks  They work very well.  Fare theist I've shot with them is 200 yards.    Does ok .
