1875 Remington Outlaw Help Needed
« on: February 09, 2022, 03:01:54 PM »
Hi need some help
I have a Uberti 1875 Remy Outlaw. Broke the hand spring Got new part from VTI and replaced same
All seemed fine till I went to the range
Loaded up the cylinder and ...no go bang
The hammer  seems to stoop about 2mm from fully closing So I am just getting a very light strike on the primer.
Take the rounds out of the cylinder and on dry fire the hammer falls as it should.
???
checked the main spring ,it seems fine
the hand seems to work as it should
I am at a loss as to the solution
Only thing I changed was the hand assembly
Is there some relation to the new hand spring
Appreciate any helpful suggestions
Thanks

New spring may have way too much tension. The hammer has to drag the hand back down. Add a slight upper bend to the very top of the main for some added tension at the end of travel, it'll speed up the lock time as well.

You can check the new hand and spring for burrs as well.

Mike just to clarify you mean bend the spring on the hand assembly ...right
Now the main spring /
Just want to be sure
Thanks again

Not Mike but I'll jump in. A heavier mainspring would override the extra tension of the hand but it will be a smoother feeling action to keep both springs tension down. If it was working satisfactory before I'd lighten the hand spring tension and leave the main spring as it was.

Maybe the hand spring is involved, but I don't understand how cartridges being in the cylinder or not would make a difference in that case.

Charlie, I hate to be Captain Obvious, nor insult your intelligence, but the two-position base pin has been in the forward position the whole time, right?   :)

Hey Charlie, I was talking about the main spring and figured you'd ease the hand spring as well.  It sounds to me like it was "just" working before. Your problem is a combination of a too proud hammer cam + a too thick left bolt arm (what year is the revolver?) with a main spring that is struggling to get the job done. You added a new higher tension hand spring to the mix and it all adds up to more tension than the main can deal with and pop a primer. You probably should make sure the main spring mounting screw is turned in all the way since it's a "tension screw"  these days.

If you replaced the hand as well,  you need to make sure the outside front corner is broken (the upper half) so as not to hang up in the corner of the hand slot.

Are you still using the same primers? Federal primers will work when others wont with very light springs and hammer strikes.

Outlaws don't have (nor could fit) 2 position base pins.

I'm also confused, Charlie Boudre.  Did you replace the hand spring or the hand AND spring?
